exvaux Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Hit diesel in my type R comin off a roundabout, slid into a sign and hedge wasnt goin that quick thank god but decision is do i repair it or strip it,dont want to go through insurance will cost me too much in the long run needs bonnet,x member, centre brace, slam panel.rad, headlight, bumper might be salvageable is it worth it or should i sell it as damaged repairable or strip it,am gutted cos i aint had it long
david_taylor Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 I would fix it, but go through your insurance. The cost of loosing no claims will be far less than paying for it yourself.
dipsy Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 I slide on black ice a couple of years back my00 classic turbo i had from new into a wall .I should not of gone up that road but the car was repaired and was as good as new lost 15% of my no claims and traded the car in last year for the newage jdm sti i have now.But i have my no claims protected now
euan_r Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 fixed my last scoob with similar damage. diy costs hardly nothing but found some of the plug welds with the mig tricky for access(where panel that supports radiator meets chassis legs). did some of them blind but got through a mot first time no bother. found it quite easy to get panel gaps equal but really tricky part is getting sidelights/headlight gap spot on. Though second hand front end i got did have some damage of its own. If the rest of your car is in tidy order though would go through insurance though as youll want color match to be spot on. i traded in not long after getting years mot.
dipsy Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Euan_r did you not try with just using the welding lens .I have to do that somtime at work in awkward places
euan_r Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 no not after seeing dad with welders flash. didnt help that i drilled out spot welds completly either but happened on christmas eve and had to work with drill bits i had. I am farmer so sometimes i can weld weld but sometimes only weld. bloody liners aaaaarghh.
dipsy Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Never had a welding flash and i do it for a living.I have seen farmers welding a bit like bird sh!t
euan_r Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 me neither but dads a plonker and doesnt even weld himself. it was local blacksmith that got him noo me but after seeing/hearing the state of him i wont be taking any chances. biggest expense will be new radiator i think.
exvaux Posted August 27, 2006 Author Posted August 27, 2006 Will probably have to sell it whatever happens but insurance will crucify me next year as im 25 my excess is 600 quid anyway so not worth it,mate owns a bodyshop its there now think he would do the work for me,can help out etc but dunno if i should cut my losses see what its worth as is keep the money id spend fixin it and buy somethin else.
Guest greegsy Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Know someone that might be interested if you decide to sell it - what colour is it?
exvaux Posted August 27, 2006 Author Posted August 27, 2006 Cool grey metallic,99 S reg, usual stuff, forge VTA,exhaust decat thats all i know, will find out for sure tomorro what its gonna cost to fix so will let people know who pm'd me.
exvaux Posted August 29, 2006 Author Posted August 29, 2006 Goes from bad to worse, body wise isnt that bad,1500 to repair but the cam pulley has shattered,so dunno what to do now, probably sell as is open to offers [:'(]
euan_r Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 is cam pully completly lying in bits? if so sounds like the valves on the head will have meshed. the other head as well due to slackness in belt. more cost unfortunatley. sorry to hear it.
euan_r Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 on further though just claim the insurance hike wont be too bad maybe or sell afterwards.
darryl_martin Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 Could try here? http://www.japperformanceparts.co.uk/Subaru%20spares.htm Grey Sti5 with battered rear end?
exvaux Posted September 1, 2006 Author Posted September 1, 2006 Tried them, they wanted nearly a grand just for the panels at the front iirc, got the panels brand new for cheaper than that
exvaux Posted September 2, 2006 Author Posted September 2, 2006 Damage looks worse than it is really Before pic []
exvaux Posted September 2, 2006 Author Posted September 2, 2006 Well put a new pulley on ,new belt, set up the timing and away it went,i am one lucky sod []
scooby222 Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 thats goood news! i had the same thing with an old car, but had to get the engine stripped and the valves reground [:'(] it cost a lot more to fix than youve been quoted so go for it, just make sure its done right and there shoulddnt be a problem mine drove 100% straight after it was sorted so that shouldnt be a problem.hope your back on the road soon
exvaux Posted September 4, 2006 Author Posted September 4, 2006 One thing that has annoyed me though is the crash has shown up previous accident damage bought the car from my local subaru dealer for peace of mind etc who denied there was anythin wrong with it when questioned before my smash, and the damage is on same side, maybe just coincidence but it was poorly repaired whoever did it.plus they still havent given me the service history despite numerous calls, emails and visits etc.
