stripe Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Hi There, I am just about to change the oil/filter for the 1000mile's after the engine was rebuilt. What's the best oil to use, I know there are loads of different opinions regarding it, but just looking to see what you all think I should use Cheers []
david_taylor Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Give Hypertech a call in Bonnybridge. 01324 812212. They are always happy to advise. I got my oil for the last change from them. Modul Racing Oil I think its called, has done well over 3000k miles, not had to do any refills and still looks really clean. It can withstand much higher temperatures in the engine apparently. Opened the car up yet since the rebuild? Dave
stripe Posted August 2, 2006 Author Posted August 2, 2006 Opened her up today, running fantastic, really nice! The smoke is getting a bit worse when I stop, but I had a good look, and there is Oil on the turbo right in at the back, there is no leak, I think it might just be needing cleaned off the turbo, don;t think there is any leak causing it, think it is just being cooked when the turbo gets really hot, cos it don't happen on short journeys
david_taylor Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Might be worth getting a mechanic to check that. Sure its okay, but you dont want a repeat of last time eh? If there is oil on the turbo, you could end up with a engine fire. That happened to my mate after he rebuilt his car and was driving it to the spray shop! Luckily he managed to put it out! If you call Hypertech and speak to Duncan, he might be able to give advice on it.
P1 NUT Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Duncan at Hypertech uses Motul 15w50 or Millers 10w60 I think. The choice of oil is down to the type of driving you do and what year of car you have. If it is a classic and only used for road driving and standard then fully synthetic 10w40 will be fine but if modified or used for track days then 10w60 as it gives better protection than the 10w40. If thinking about the 15w50 then i would only advise this if modified/track use and always used on long journeys as it is thicker than the 10w it takes longer to provide protection to your engine so if you are just a local commute then it won't protect as well as 10w oil. Hope this helps.
david_taylor Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Really good advice mate. However, you should never open the scoob up until the engine temperature is at the normal temp. At which case the 15w50 should always provide the protection.

It's going into Ian Grieve on the 11th August to have a standard airbox put on, so I am going to get them to give it a look over, and see what's what. When the oil/filter change is being done, I will get the guy to have a look at the oil on the Turbo aswell, I am starting to get totally paranoid now P1 Nut thanks for the advice mate, it is basically everyday driving to work, and just general use, has an induction kit which I am about to replace with the standard box, and a HKS exhaust with de-cat centre section, but that is it mods wise. Think am gonna stick with 10W-40 then
david_taylor Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Good to see you are getting the standard air filter on. I got my new exhaust yesterday. Magnex with decat mid sections and 3.5" tailpipe. Sound great...other than that there will be no more mods. What happened to your car has confirmed to me its not worth the risk.
stripe Posted August 2, 2006 Author Posted August 2, 2006 Exactly, it really isn't worth messing about with the engine unless you have serious amounts of cash to spend, and know exactly what you are doing. Let's face it, they aint exactly sluggish as standard! I will be very happy once I get the airbox sorted, and the oil smoke issue dealt with!
Double Zero Posted August 3, 2006 Posted August 3, 2006 Stripe i looked @ your car b4 you bought it and i noticed that the turbo heat shield was missing ,i was just wondering when you mentioned that the turbo had oil on it ,has it been replaced since the engine rebuild? Stevie
stripe Posted August 3, 2006 Author Posted August 3, 2006 Not that I know of matey, I think the unit was possibly rebuilt though?
terzo neil Posted August 3, 2006 Posted August 3, 2006 maybe cam cover gasket leaking slightly onto hot exhaust
stripe Posted August 3, 2006 Author Posted August 3, 2006 maybe cam cover gasket leaking slightly onto hot exhaust That's what I thought it might be aswell mate, but when a had a look around I noticed the oil on the Turbo, which I think is causing the smoke and smell. Ian Grieve are gonna have a look at it when it goes in on the 11th
terzo neil Posted August 3, 2006 Posted August 3, 2006 that was up with my other car oil out the turbo it was knackered bearing away that much play felt like stirring soup
stripe Posted August 3, 2006 Author Posted August 3, 2006 A would like to think the turbo on mine is solid having just had a full rebuild (a would hope so anyway??) where could the oil be coming from to get onto the turbo?, or could it just be residue from when the engine was re-built?
