Paintwork protection

Noticed a few wee chips appearing on the car at the front of the rear arches where the arch  begins to flare out. Not really sure if I want mudflaps as I like the way the car looks as it is. However  I was at Doune at the weekend and there was a gorgeous Porsche Turbo there (with even bigger flared arches than the 22B) which had a very subtle layer or transparent film fitted in the aforementioned place. There were absolutely no stone-chips on the Porsche arches and it certainly didn't spoil the look of the car in nay way. Think I'd prefer that to the flaps option. Does anyone know anything about this type of film protection, have any experience of it, or know where to source it?

Cheers, Iain

This was fitted as standard on my old Rx8 on the rear arches and sills, think its made by 3M , hope this helps

Its just a sticky clear plastic film.

Cheers for the replys guys.

Was also wondering if there were any downsides to it, eg yellowing with age, peeling off, delaminating, removal problems etc. There sems to be a few different kinds on the market at varying prices (and qualities I'd imagine).Noticed that the wing mirrors on my Passat have a film covering which looks as good as new at 2yrs old. Any comments would be welcome.

Hi Mate

I work for one of the largest 3M distributors in Europe. The previous post is correct it is a 3M product although there are several versions of it made by other people such as Tesa, Scapa etc....

I know it as "Heli" tape, mainly because one of the other uses is the protection of leading edge on helicpoter rotar blades. I can get you any information you need on this such as technical data sheets etc.....

with regard to downsides, if the correct product is chosen then there shouldnt be a problem. The important thing to consider is the adhesives sytem used. You should be looking at acrylic based adhesives as these have better ageing characteristics than cheaper rubber adhesive. UV stability is also an issue as this is what causes the yellowing and weakening of the bond.....

drop me a pm if you need any further information...

cheers

Paul
