scoobaroo Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 Your project looks like its coming along very nicely indeed, paint looks spot on [H] Keep us up to date with more pics as and when you get them [] Looks like a show and shine winner in the making [Y] with a fair bit of oomph under the bonnet [au] Great thread [Y] Marty.
Kenny.S Posted October 18, 2006 Author Posted October 18, 2006 Cheers again for the comments guys [Y] After a bit of pondering i've decided to stick with the 18g, the spending had to stop somewhere and plus i'm also quite keen to see how it'll go on a 2.1, havent seen anyone else daft enough to spend a fortune building an engine and then put a fairly small turbo on it. I spoke to the boss earlier today about what work he's got lined up for me, it doesnt look like i'm going to have time to put the engine together until the end of November [] yet alone get it in the car, things can change though so we'll see what happens. Ill keep you up to date on any progress. Kenny
Kenny.S Posted January 12, 2007 Author Posted January 12, 2007 Happy new year all [] I'm offshore just now, on nightshift with nothing to do so i thought i'd do a wee update. The car looks pretty much as it did 3 months ago, but other things have been moving along slowly. I've had the headers for about 6 months but never got round to wrapping them. So while i was off over Christmas and New Year i decided to get on with it. First up was grinding off the protruding part of the lamba boss in the collector, forgot to take a picture before i started but anyone who's got a set will know what i mean. An hour or so with a die grinder and some sanding drums Once i'd done that i gave them a right good clean out and got them wrapped, not in the house!! I just brought them in to dry them out I dont know how effective the heat resistant paint is as stopping them soaking up water but i did the downpipe with the same stuff and had some left over so i figured i might as well use it. In for a penny in for a pound [] One 80mm air flow meter I havent bonded it in just yet, ill probably wait until i've got the inlet pipework fitted and then stick it in with some sikoflex. I had originally planned to put the air filter through the inner wing, but once the maf is bonded in the trumpet would be stuck there. Not like you would need to remove it very often but still, not ideal. Also the water ingress thing was at the back of my mind so i decided to put it behind the headlight and get as much air into it as i could. I've now got the heads back, and they look virtually brand new, they didnt need too much work afterall, the exhaust seats and exhaust valves were recut to remove some pit marks as is to be expected after 12 years, and some mild port work to blend the seats in. Didnt get a chance to take any pictures before i left but ill put some up when i start putting the engine together which will hopefully be when i get home after this trip. Kenny
the squiggle Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 Looking good boss Where did you obtain the 80mm trumpet from? Look a neat solution to a good idea
jcscoob Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 Kenny its all lookin real good[y], dig in mate your doin well [][h]
Kenny.S Posted January 12, 2007 Author Posted January 12, 2007 Mr Lateral I cant take credit for the idea though, it was Andy.F who suggested cutting the element out and bonding it into a bigger tube, this was just my interpretation of it. All will become clear in time []
marky.t.s Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 Hi Kenny, crackin thread ,just went through it all as i wasnt even a newbie when you started it,car is lookin first class, you must have some patience, just doing a wee bit here and there whenever youre home would drive me nuts.Anyway ill look forward to the next installment, keep it up mate . Hope to see it in the flesh when she takes to the road one of these days.
Kenny.S Posted January 12, 2007 Author Posted January 12, 2007 Although the first post in this thread is April 06 i actually started work on it in December 05! Patience is something i have a lot of, i'm also a fussy sod so it's just aswell really. It does get a bit frustrating especially when i'm making some good progress and then the office phones and tells me i've got a job in a few days or sometimes the next day! The list of things i need to buy or do is slowly getting smaller but i still have to make all the intercooler pipework, finish the reverse manifold, make new mounts for the powersteering pump and the tiny little alternator, get pipes made for the powersteering, rewire a few things.......... When it's finished though ill be sure to come along to as many local meets and events as i can. Kenny
drb5 Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 Quote i'm also a fussy sod so it's just aswell really. I can vouch for that! []
Kenny.S Posted January 12, 2007 Author Posted January 12, 2007 [] I sometimes wonder if it's a gift or a curse!
st3ph3n Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 If something's worth doing then it's worth doing right Kenny. Although hopefully we'll no be here this time next year without the car running []
Kenny.S Posted January 12, 2007 Author Posted January 12, 2007 Quote If something's worth doing then it's worth doing right Kenny. Although hopefully we'll no be here this time next year without the car running [] True, but if it's not finished for this summer ill be a bit dissapointed. I'd really like to make it to some track days at knockhill, and do a few 1/4's at crail. I dont expect it to do anything special as it's only going to have a relatively wee turbo but just out of curiosity []

Kenny.S Posted January 22, 2007 Author Posted January 22, 2007 Finally...... something resembling an engine [] Next move will be to get the car towed up to the garage and put it in. That just leaves all the i/c pipes, power steering pipes, a few brackets and some wiring..... Kenny
scoobaroo Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 That looks very tidy indeed, will look even better when its installed [H] Marty.
Kenny.S Posted January 22, 2007 Author Posted January 22, 2007 Quote What engine stand is that? It's nothing special, it was an ebay effort, cost me something like £40 delivered, i could have bought an expensive one but i hope i dont have to use it that often!
fai17 Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 And i see you've got a lightened pulley. How long now till your car is ready?
Kenny.S Posted January 22, 2007 Author Posted January 22, 2007 It wasnt so much because it was lightened, more the fact that i wanted a single pulley with 5 vee's, it would take too long to try and explain what i'm up to but all will become clear in time [] I'm not sure how much longer it's going to take, with any luck the engine might be in tonight and then i can make a start on all the bits i've got to make.
Kenny.S Posted January 23, 2007 Author Posted January 23, 2007 Had a pretty productive day. I went over to John Stevenson's in the morning to pick up a special clutch alignment tool [] Worked a treat too Then it was time to try and get the bugger in It actually wasn't too bad, half an hour or so and it was in The manifold thats on it just now was just to lift it in, i should hopefully get my reversed one back in a few days. Ill probably put the up pipe and turbo on tomorrow and then start working some things out, like where the header tank's going, power steering reservoir, pipes.... Kenny
drb5 Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 Looks good as per Kenny, but errrrrrrrrrrrrrr "up-pipe"? Why isn't it on just now? Hoping you haven't gone and got yourself that naughty 3 bolt up-pipe!? [] Oh and i have that special clutch alignment tool here. Would have saved you some time........and of course listening to John dribble on. []
higgy Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 Good luck with the 3 bolt up pipe when the engin is installed . Im sure there will be a fair amount of swering going on. Projects almost there now. Keep us posted. Higgy
