STi_Bandit Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 Ive been looking at the front of the car and yes i think it would look better detanged, has anyone got a pic of there blobeye prefferablly WR Blue detanged so i can really decide if this mod is of benifit to the looks. Seconadly how easy is it to detang the headlights what do you have to do ??? Martin
oobster Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 Hullo Martin. My car has been de-tangoed, and so has Gus The Bus. It does make quite a difference to the look of the front (IMHO). You need to take the headlights out, remove the 8 or 9 small screws that hold the lense onto the back bit (remembering the one underneath a wee bit of foam!) then heat the sealant round the lense - Jamie done mine and used hot water (kettle) and his Mrs. hairdryer - start at one corner and gently prize open the lense. Once the lense is off be careful not to touch the inside of it (fingerprints) then the orange bit should just clip out. Re-attach the lense (Jamie didnt use any new sealant on mine and they have never misted-up since) then re-do all the 8 or 9 screws, plug back in and fit some silvatec bulbs (available from Revolution) and job's a good-un! If your ordering the bulbs, best to order two sets and swap the rears out while u are there. Jamie spray-painted my orange bulbs silver though and they still looked & worked fine so you might want to do that (the bulbs from Revolution are about £15 per pair) Bound to be pics on the forum somewhere of Gus's motor - check the for sale sections and there might be pics from when he was selling his wheels. Think Irish Al has done his too. There's a pic of Al's car on Ricey's 19" Aerospeed alloys thread. HTH Andy
STi_Bandit Posted March 13, 2006 Author Posted March 13, 2006 When your heating up the sealent are you breaking the seal with somthing like a stanley knife. Sounds all a bit to advance for my level of diy. i would end up making a complete arse of it by the sounds of things [] Martin
oobster Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 Na - the sealant is melting. When you stick both halfs back together you have to re-heat the sealant so it will stick the lense to the back bit again. I'll nip thru and give you a hand if you want - i was the same as you - a bit feart i'd muck it up. But i watched Jamie closely when he done mine and i'd be confident enough to do it myself now. Buy the bulbs and geez a shout.
gus the bus Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 martin, have a look at ED209's pic in the Upper grill for sale thread in the Sales section. It shows WR blue with detango. I have some but only on my PC @ home. Gus[]
fai17 Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 You can do them in the oven as well [] here Don't put in the microwave if you are in a hurry[]
karps Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 Hardest bit i found was getting the headlight OUT, theres 2 screws in at the back of the headlight and i suggest you use a magnetic screwdriver for them. Use a hairdryer to separate, it works fine.
gus the bus Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 didn't really find doing it a problem tbh. Me n bigbadboab managed it nae bother. Happy to give you a hand too! Gus
stephen_cheyne Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 I was a bit feart as well and kept putting it off, but well chuffed now that it's done. Before After Better with someone giving you a hand, one to heat with hairdryer while the other splits the headlight. My fingers were in bits trying to do it myself. Give the sealant a good reheat before putting back together as I see one of my headlights fogs up when it's wet now. Stephen.
irish al Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 I used a hot air gun which was probably a lot faster than a hair dryer. You can remove the front grill and with a spanner remove the bolt holding on the white plastic lug holding the light in, that way you dont have to remove the two small screws fron the back of the bulb and its much easier. Al
stephen_cheyne Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 Yeah I removed the front grill then the bolt holding on the white plastic lug also. Stephen.

Al Which reminds me I still have your hot air gun[:$] I'll bring it Wednesday Al. PS I did the detango this way too! made the job really easy IMHO. Gus
