~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 I bought an uppipe from a classic scooby on Ebay and it just arrived. It was supposed to look like this ( this is how it was advertised) but it's actually not got any EGT or lambda sensor sockets ( that's not a problem though as I will use a CEL fix with a little resistor anyway) BUT............... the bolts are seized in the top plate ( see piccies). So whats the best way to remove these ? I also want to ditch the heatshield too and lag it instead. Any ideas for how to easily remove the cat shield with ease ? I'm in the Aberdeen area if anyone can help - Thanks in advance - it's hopefully getting fitted on Saturday if WUZ is feeling in a better frame of mind ( recently lost a colleague offshore) Cal
jamie_wood Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 Jimmy, Soak them in Wd40 over night and then try double nutting them (not a glesga kiss) You know what double nutting is? Screw one nut down, screw it far enough that you can get a second nut on. Tighten the second nut up against the first one and then use the first nut to try and slacken the stud. Understand that? If possible you could also try and give them a little heat to aid the process. If that wont work then you will need to buy new ones from Subaru. They are bloomin expensive though @ £4-£5 each!!! I would try a local hardware store or a smiddy as they will have them a lot cheaper. if your struggling, gimme a shout and I will get some posted up to you.
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted February 20, 2006 Author Posted February 20, 2006 many thanks guv - I will give that a bash
jamie_wood Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 Or you could try Vise Grips on them. Would be handy of you had a vice?
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted February 20, 2006 Author Posted February 20, 2006 Yeah I have a vice but no bench to mount it on yet !
WUZ Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Cal - as I told you last night, 1 - that is a Classic/Bugeye STi Uppipe NOT an aftermarket Uppipe. As you paid by Paypal, best to do as we discussed last night. 2 - THOSE BOLTS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE THERE! No need to remove them unless they are damaged. 3 - Marc and I promise we won't laugh at you again like we did last night.[] 4 - These bolts are a high tensile steel and are M10 X 1.25 (Metric Fine Pitch). VERY hard to find unless you go to Grampian Fasteners and tell them I sent ya![] Russell
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted February 21, 2006 Author Posted February 21, 2006 Thanks for the info - I kinda suspected that was the case but the whole issue wasn't helped by the fact that the Ebay picture showed no bolts in-situ ! For info - I have axel stands, large jack and torque wrench & limited tools - anything else you need other than the usual obvious tools, heatwrap, wire, resisitor and gaskets ( which it sounds like we wont need afterall) I will get you to have a look at my Lamco guage too as it's not working too well at present. Needle is relucant to move unless your at full throttle - it wasn't like a few months back after we installed it. One more Q - what's the best way to get rid of the up-pipe heatshield - I don't want to damage it hence seeking your advice. Tempted to leave it on after hearing that iheatwrap can trap salt & moisture and corrode the metal given that it's not an aftermarket job ( info from a US website). Any thoughts ? I obviously trust your judgement [] Cheers Calum
WUZ Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 We'll paint the Wrap on the U/P if you want but the Undertray pretty much stops water getting onto the U/P and unless your car is being left for a long time (dont think so!) then there is no chance of moisture corroding the U/P to any greater extent than by just having the heatshield on. Russell
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted February 21, 2006 Author Posted February 21, 2006 Cool thanks - how do i sensibly remove the heatshield then ? This will mean i can deliver it to your gaff before Sunday CGS
WUZ Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 With a grinder! - You'll see it is tack-welded to the U/P in several places but should be easy enough for a "competent DIY-er" like you. Russell
harvey_smith Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 Sorry just seen this. If you are still struggling and need new studs I can let you have 5 new ones for £4 plus postage. harveysmith1@btopenworld.com www.geocities.com/harveysmith3000
WUZ Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 We've left the fitting of this for now due to a couple of reasons so we can add it on with the next stage of Mods...................................once Natalie approves them of course! Harvey - we'll need 5 new studs as a precaution, let me know where to send the cheque and you can post them up to me and I'll fit 'em on whilst wrapping the U/P. Russell
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted February 27, 2006 Author Posted February 27, 2006 Thanks folks - I looked up proactive in the dictionary and there was a pictre of you guys in there ! I can feel a Hybrid TD 04 coming on now ! Cheers Cal
st3ph3n Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 Lol. Calsonic. YOU CRAZY! I can see I'm going to have to up my game this year to catch you up in the battle of the Black WRXs. I must do it for all of blobeye kind! These bugeye infidels must not win. Quickly Robin, to the bat cave!
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted February 27, 2006 Author Posted February 27, 2006 Even with my measely 250 bhp I took a few scalps from the Elise boys, an S2000 and another scooby. Outta the hairpin the car is on full boost so quickly. Bing was mightily impressed during his pax lap. Now got the high flo' cat on which is performing nicely - more torque & better spool up with more pops and bangs to boot. Not had it dyno'd yet and probably not worth the hassle until I do the turbo and up-pipe.... Cheers CGS
Bing Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 yeh, I was impressed a while back when we were en route to knockhill and even more impressed on track. IMO there is good pulling power and the car reacts well at low revs. Its a world apart from the old TDO4 I once knew, looking forward to seeing it with an up pipe, minus a sock in it! P.S your brakes are braw - ill need to see that crazy guy up in Aberdeen for some of the same
WUZ Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 CRAZY............ME................Ask Cal about the B-Road blast we had on Sunday.................then you can call me crazy.[] Russell
RaymondH Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 Cal.. FWIW I have an up pipe for sale if you're interested. It's wrapped, painted, has an egt/lambda boss and is ready to go on - it just needs studs which you'll get off your old one with a bit of luck. It's on the For Sales on here - Email me if you want pics.
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted February 28, 2006 Author Posted February 28, 2006 yeah I saw that Raymondo but have one already thanks - you should edit your post to say that it will fit ALL scoobs including new ages . might get more chance of selling it that way CGS
RaymondH Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 Cheers Cal. Thanks for the info - I wasn't sure about other fitments. You learn something new every day
