zeolite Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Having put a few thousand miles on the 2005 WRX PPP i am now familiar with the sounds that it makes and I wondered if anyone else has the same. Sings at 62 mph. Presumably a function of the tyres. Has a noticeable whine in 1st gear Brakes often have a grind. Doesn't seem to affect their performance. The car is completely different to my old 99 wagon. Feels much bigger, higher and stiffer. It is certainly faster although I do feel I am sitting ON the car rather than being part of it. Brakes are much better although I am not impressed with the Bridgestone RE-50s which are very squirrely in the wet. My top tip would be to junk those ASAP
fraser_allan Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Zeolit, i to have a wrx 300 and i have the same sound at 6o ish, i thought it may be someing to do withthe turbo, the revs are about 2500 and its like a whistle-wind noise. I love driving it, its the fourth turbo ive had, and the first new age. HAPPY MOTORING. FRAZ.
st3ph3n Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 I've never noticed the noise I must say. I do get a whilstling noise when backing off under light load, but that's the SSQV openning slightly rather than the full whack for heavy boost applications. The tyres - the more I use them the more I feel there's probalby better ones out there. My 05 has picked up a squeak/rattle from the back in the last few weeks. Only rears itself after maybe 20 miles of driving. Can't work out what it is though. I thought suspension related, but the car handling is absolutely spot on where it should be.
bigbadboab Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Phew, I was trying to figure out what the noise was. It also happens at around 80, 100 and erm.............yeah[]
gus the bus Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 What noises? can't say I've noticed any ( but probably will now[] ) Had my WRX300 since July last year and compared to the classic initially found the handling far lighter and twitchier and as you say didn't feel like part of the car. Until.................. I got the teins and Strut braces on which has VASTLY improved the handling and my confidence in where the car is going. Like you I've had brakes grinding a bit but more to do with first thing in the morning and moisture/ residue on the discs rather than any problem . Other than that FANTASTIC[]
zeolite Posted February 17, 2006 Author Posted February 17, 2006 So nobody else with the 1st gear whine then?
gus the bus Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 I'll have a listen the morra but cannot say I've noticed anything[:|] Although, If its as obvious as it appears you are saying then no, can't say I've heard anything! ....and if there is a noise in my car I'll notice is!!!!!!!!! Gus
Gee Wr1 Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 The whistle noise is the turbo, it's same on the WR1. Is the whinning in 1st gear not just the diff?
zeolite Posted February 17, 2006 Author Posted February 17, 2006 I am positive the 62mph whine is tyres as it gets a different tone on different surfaces and is heard at 62 in 3 gears. First gear whine just appears when in first gear although I can't remember if it is with lock on.
stephen_fergus Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 Ive had my wagon with PPP for 4 months now and love it to bits .. Best performance outa all the WRXs I've had ( that's right .. count'em Brian [] [] ) Agree with Gus about the handling , the car was enjoyable to drive but not confidence inspiring .Fitted the Prodrive Spring kit and what a difference .. Brilliant![] Reminds me of the handling of my Classic now. As for the whine I heard this 1st when I test-drove the UK300.. I fell in love with that noise ! Lol !As soon as you backed off the turbo .....[H] My wagon does it but it's not as noticable . The brake noise is there too but thought it was just rust on the disc 'cos I dont use mine that much now. At least I know it's nothing to worry about . No 1st gear whine tho .. Cheers, Steve
wrxmania Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 Ive had my wagon with PPP for 4 months now and love it to bits .. Best performance outa all the WRXs I've had ( that's right .. count'em Brian [] [] ) Don't you worry Steve - I am counting every one as they pass (quickly) []
NightOwl Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 If you want Ian, I'm happy to do a straight swap if you want your old motor back. I'll just turn the radio up to mask the noises![]
zeolite Posted February 18, 2006 Author Posted February 18, 2006 What noises are those? You been flying over jumps in the old thing again?
billyboy Posted February 18, 2006 Posted February 18, 2006 55 plate sti with ppp makes the same noises and some extra ones.Like the steering column, the rear screen and the glovebox and now the radio surround. Subaru at last are coming up to test the squib.
corsa Posted February 18, 2006 Posted February 18, 2006 04 plate STI without PPP makes some lovely noises, none which i would say are meant to be there.Rear struts changed at the 10K service but other than that a very happy Subaru owner. Davie
wrxmania Posted February 18, 2006 Posted February 18, 2006 Had my dash and centre console etc in bits last weekend trying to sort rattles - it hal worked [] Not annoying enough to make me sell it - yet [] Brian.
fai17 Posted February 19, 2006 Posted February 19, 2006 The only noise i get is the passenger screaming when i put the foot down. No 1st gear whine tho but plenty of pops and bangs tho.[Y] I think i need new front strut as they are knocking and had my rears done already.
paddy247 Posted February 19, 2006 Posted February 19, 2006 They dont make them like they used to my94 STI is 12yrld and there are no suspect noises from withing or outwith the car, the oldest and best car I have ever owned.
dram300 Posted February 19, 2006 Posted February 19, 2006 Grr, I din't hear a whine at 62 mph till I read this thread. I initially thought the whine was just the wife, but now I hear it all the time ... even when shes at home sipping cocoa. Seems to occur more when you lift off the accelerator, but its there ... at 62 mph. I've some simple solutions: 1. Drive at 60 or 64 mph. 2. Turn the radio up. 3. Drop a gear, open the window and listen to the burble.
zeolite Posted February 19, 2006 Author Posted February 19, 2006 I suppose the best test would be to put different size wheels on and see if the whine occurs at a different speed
