Advice on car stereo repair shops

Not too sure who to use for the repair on a Competition level Kenwood head unit I have.

Its now about 4 years old. Bought from Skids and it played up about six months after I got it.

The warranty covered the repair but it only lasted a month or so out of its 12 months period before it went baps up againface-icon-small-sad.gif

Its a flip front one and it wont do anything now. The face is half way round and wont move when powered.

I would normally chuck it in the bin, but it was £650face-icon-small-shocked.gif and its only been used for a few monthsface-icon-small-sad.gif

Ideas please.

I know there is a Kenwood repair shop in Perth but Im unsure of what their work is like.

Jamie, what unit is it?

I had a (I think) 971R Minidisc unit in my ol' Vectra. It was a 2001 Vintage and it was top stuff. The flappy foldy mechanism failed about 3 months after I sold the car to my mate. He got the problem fixed in Glasgow I think, but it wasnae cheap from what I remember, maybe £50.

If you fail in Perth let me know and I'll get in touch with him and see how he did fix it.

For a time i was really into my car stereos and like wise bought a top end Kenwood cd with the mask front panel must be a similar age now. It's now in my old run around!

It worked perfectly for 2 1/2 years but then it started playing up ie face going blank but still playing etc.

I bought the unit from Car Electronics in Derby and have always delt with them for any stereo or alarm stuff.

When the fault developed i rang them and spoke to a guy called Richard who i now know quite well.

He was pretty certain it would be the ribbon cable that conects the front panel as it was a very common fault on this era of headunit and can cause a whole manor of faults to occur depending on exactly what tracks break and when.

The cable was £9 plus fitting (cant remember how much it was) but he knew i was ok with a soldering iron and told me how to change it. It was a little nerve racking taking apart a £500+ head unit but it is quite straight forward. All you need is a very small soldering iron ie 1-1.5mm tip, small watchmakers screwdrivers and a steady hand.

It's worked perfectly ever since must be getting on for 18 months ago now although i think it's starting to fail again but for £9 i cant complain. When it gets really bad i'll do it again.

Where is this place in Perth then, my kenwood doesn't like discs and the panel doesn't like to close after trying to play a disc. I'll be visiting AWD sometime soon so can pop in if they are kenwood guys

Kenny, that sounds almost spot on as to what my mate said to me now that you've written it. He didn't do the repair himself though, but it was the ribbon that had gone.
