A9 speed limit?

Hi,

I'll be traveling up the A9 on my way to Aviemore area, from Edinburgh, for a few days with the family.

I've been done in the past 82mph, 3 points and fine. So don't want to get that again.

Is it classed as a 70 or 60mph road?

Any one know what speed will be tolerated - if you know what I mean?

Any thoughts mucho appreciated,

I do beleive its a 60 but iam sure theres people here that travel it alot more than me that can confirm this for you.

If it's national speed limit then it's 60 single carriage way, 70 dual. Unless signposted otherwise.

That's what your highway code will tell you anyway.

Just remember - the cameras will be on the nice straight bits where you can overtake and see for miles.

The road changes between single and dual carriageways with the majority of speed cameras being on the single carriage. Just make sure you adjust accordingly, the cameras are fairly easy to spot in the distance. HTH?

It changes between dual and single carriageway, so 70mph and 60mph accordingly.

Speed camers are easy to spot - but the unmarked vehicles arent so easy

the dual carriage way is 70mph, there are no fixed cameras on those bits, there is a long stretch of dual carriage way ner dalwhinnie, sometime have a mobile unit there, but usually sit at the schlod summit (wont affect you tho its after avimore).

the single carriage way is 60mph, there are a couple of sites with fixed cameras, but all nearer to perth, one southbound after dunkeld, one northbound after pitlochary, but they are all easy to spot, out in the open for a change!!

watch for the bit at ballanuig, changes to a 50 zone for the junction, so going north dont accelerate too early and coming south, its at the end of a strstch of dual carriage way, so make sure you slow down when you see the signs!!

there are others but cant quite remember the exact locations, sure other will know tho.

not a bad road, unless it is busy, there are a few places to overtake if you have some power, but watch out for the junction at dunkeld, very common accident spot.

Drive to Inverness every week from Dundee so know this road well, take it very easy at Ballinluig, its a 50 limit and the cameras are very sensitive!

After that there are no fixed cameras anywhere on the A9 north but coming back down there is one at Blair Atholl.

When your heading back south be very careful after the very short stretch of dual carriageway about 5 miles south of Newtonmore junction, the camera van has a habit of sitting in the second layby on the left.

I usually sit at about 75ish!, you will find most people do this speed.

The best bit is the dual cariageway after Dalwhinnie going south, seriously fast as long as you have a good radar detector, usually its like wacky races goling down there!
