Andy F ? Ecutek Remap :- Cals Report

Are the up pipe and down pipe worth 20-30 each or combined?

Would I be right in saying that an 05 WRX with a full decat, or at worst a single wisely placed sports cat, and with either an STI panel filter or an induction kit would make about 270+ after a remap?

Stephen you're bang on, full de-cat, panel filter and re-map should see you in the region of 270/280bhp.

20-30 bhp comibined, from up/down pipe.

You'll be looking at 280-290bhpface-icon-small-wink.gif

My appologies. I didnt realise you had de-catted the up pipe.

I dont think the up pipe cat is the most restrictive part so cant seeyour output being much more than cal with the downpipe cat still in. Worth doing regardless if you're planning on upping the boost as it all counts. Also the up pipe cat can crack with the increase in boost and get sucked through the fins in the turbo. Ouch. Think thats only on big power cars though.

Correct me if Im wrong tho.

Ye, thats the main reason i'll be doing the up-pipe cat as well, don't wanna take the chance of it crumbling throo me turbo.... altho it would be an excuse to upgrade, lol....

Cheers for the info...

Ian G & chris - I have only decatted the centre pipe at the bottom end of the exhaust >> see below

flow.gif

So I still have up-pipe ( which heavily limits boost pressure & thwarts EGT ) and the downpipe which is very restrictive too.

I would describe the situation I have now as being equivalent to when i had the H&S downpipe without the remap. i.e more pull low down the rev range.

Brian - any more details on the sports cat ? sounds like a good idea.

Gordy - Direct quote from Andy F's website states " fully decated 2 ½? bore system is adequate up to 350 bhp. After this a 3? system is recommended. Sports cat systems are available but ultimately still limit power compared to a fully decated setup "

Colin - yeah tell me about it. The sound of yer turbo spooling up on that run was immense. The exhaust @ KH is outta this world though !

I'm amazed you can remember that far back Cal but you'll be sorry to hear my car no longer has the trademark roller turbo whine, it now has the 20g shriek. The vf has now taken residence under the Squirrels bonnet and the semi inducing noise can now be enjoyed by a whole new audience.

Talking of noise, the Type R continues to get louder. I've just had the headers and up-pipe ported and all I can say is fank gawd KH don't have a Db limit.

So whats next on your mod hit list then?

Thanks for the link Cal.

Was in discussing it today - ie plans for post warranty...the best solution seems 100% to get a totally free flowing 3" downpipe and put the sports cat just after the A/F sensor, which will be back in where it is (no CEL fix needed). The sports cat, and a small resonator (for sound proofing if needed) will be in the centre section, after all probes and sensors. Sounds a good plan. Also the downpipe will be a snakehead, not the poor Subaru design.

Will not be doing the uppipe or headers at present as I don't like the sound of equal length - I want to keep my rumble.

Scoobies are funny sounding cars. Some like the burble and some love them and i am one of them.

If i didn't want the noise i would have bought a JDM car or dare i say AN EVO.

So for me the UK car is here to stay.face-icon-small-wink.gif

But i am getting Gruppe S header and up pipe in the never ending search for more power without changing the turboface-icon-small-wink.gif

Cal get a downpipe and up pipe fitted .Then go back to Andy for more power.Cal does your remap go by egt temp .I get 18psi at 800degrees and i am getting that boost with the cooler air at this time of year before it has reached 800degrees .

Brian - according to Andy F there is no point in doing the downpipe unless you whip out the up-pipe too at the same time ( you may as well while the downpipe is out face-icon-small-wink.gif ) The reason Bing can get away with it and still get good power is because he's running a TD05 which doesn't limit EGT's so much. The up-pipe cat may disintegrate into your Td04's blades if EGT's get too high. So by running a tad leaner with the Td05 you can run a higher boost........At present I'm richer than the Sultan of Brunei in high boost mode but it's safer for the car. Millers is essential for extended b-road blasts & track days on high boost with me just now because it's kinder on the engine being able to run a better quality fuel. There maybe the benefit of a few ponies but it's not the sole reason to add it.

Andy also advises a STi8 intercooler but reckons the WRX one receives better cooling due to it's smaller dimensions. i.e a catch 22 ! He also reckons Motul oil is the daddio after running on his minted blobeye for a while and seeing minimal degradation of the oil

I bloody hope that he doesn't have a TD05 on his car........I fitted a VF35 and STi (decatted) uppipeface-icon-small-happy.gif............................At least I think I did face-icon-small-tongue.gif

I'm sure he bought Gumball's IHI VF 35 and STI up pipe which has no cat in it.

Was just going to add that - on the blobeye cars - correct me if I am wrong anyone - but there is no up-pipe cat, only the downpipe and centre cat..

For those who are baffled ( newbies etc) this may help although it doesn't show the up-pipe cat.......Brian maybe be correct but I thought it was just the STi's that came out of the factory with 2 cats ( I maybe wrong though face-icon-small-wink.gif)

All the bugeye and Blobeye WRX's have 3 cats - Uppipe, Downpipe, Cat pipe.

The Sti's from the same years have only got 2 - Downpipe and Cat pipe.

This is why the WRX's have an EGT sensor in the uppipe, to monitor egt's in case they get too high and cause the Cat to disintegrate and fly into the compressor wheel causing no end of harm to the turbo.

Russell

ps - just noticed I pushed the 4 instead of the 5 face-icon-small-blush.gif should have read VF35.

Cal - you coming up for the meeting at the Lecht in November as I have the sticky things you required (need to get them to Gumball and Bing as well!)?
