clutdav Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 Howdy everyone, I have recently fitted a K&N Typhoon cold air induction kit to my UK Sti9. Following on from some concerns that forum users posted regarding possible detonation and lean running I got a power run and fuelling diagnostics done on the scooby at Wallace Performance. I have to say a big thank you to the guys there as they fitted me straight in at short notice. It turns out that the car wasn't running lean at all - in fact the factory ECU was compensating by significantly over fuelling and thus sapping all the power that the exhaust and induction kit should have given. Therefore a re-map should release this power potential and also sort out the fuelling in the process. I suppose the real question I have is has anyone from the forum had a re-map done at Wallace Performance? And more importantly what was your impressions of them and the car afterwards? From first impressions they seem to be knowledgable and friendly - I would just like to hear someone else's opinion before I potentially part with a lot of money. Thanks guys and gals I look forward to hearing from you. Dave
Boyakasha Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 Dave, Gavin is very good. I have lost count the number of remaps we have had, and he will go out of his way to help. The remap is the way to go, for the price and the power you'll get, it will be well worth it. Marc
clutdav Posted August 30, 2005 Author Posted August 30, 2005 Thanks for that Marc. Are you aware of anyone else having a re-map done at Wallace Performance? Dave
Johnny50 Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 I think Kenny McGee had a TEK remap from Wallace. He was certainly happy with the results. So what did your car make on the rollers ?
dipsy Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 Hello clutdav go and deal with Andy f .I had my my2000 uk turbo done by him perfect job go and email Andy to see how busy he is
wrxmania Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 Clutdav, Warranty will be pretty mcuh out the window if it is mapped with the other mods, but if that is not an issue - then there is only one place to consider in the UK - ANDY F PERFORMANCE. People travel from all over the U.K. and elsewhere for his incomparable services. Brian
the squiggle Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 It is a populer misconception that fitting a cone filter leans out the mixture and people that dish out that kind of advise are causing more harm than good and should stick to things they know about not just think they know. Funny that, you would think that fitting a cone filter to a car on a std ECU would make it lean out due to all that extra air rushing in but alas it richens up the mixture. Any modification that interferes with the air flow over the MAF sensor defo needs a remap to get any kind of healthy benefit. If your car is mapped for a std airbox then a uprated panel filter would give the best gains but if you are planning remapping the std ecu for a cone filter then a healthy benefit will gained from protecting the filter from heat. But dont listen to me i know nothing about nothing. Grant
dipsy Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 What grant says about the maf they can fail with a performance panel filter as well i know i am on my third on my my2000 uk turbo
the squiggle Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 << What grant says about the maf they can fail with a performance panel filter as well i know i am on my third on my my2000 uk turbo >> I should have said a dry panel filter as the MAF on the 99/2000 cars can fail when you get oil on the MAF sensor. ~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005 Lads, I had a last minute decison to visit Andy F on Wednesday with Bing ( Stevie Crosbie).......so what can i do before Wednesday to squeeze some more gains ? I DO NOT WANT TO DECAT the downpipe cos it's a pain in the ass come MOT for me and it ain't very easy to change if there is an insurance issue ( I have had one before and it was ace though ;D) ! So at present I have a K&N panel filter, decat centre, unresonated centre which is giving 227 bhp and 213 ftlbs torque. Would it be worth me getting an induction kit or losing the up-pipe before Wednesday. I though of one of these high flow cats on the downpipe but tey seem pricey and dont give a massive benefit.......what about an Sti8 intercooler......my napper is spinning. Any ideas then folks ? ........... Also, what have you Ecutek lads aksed Andy for before e.g 1) dual map - demister functionality if so then do you run a performace map & fuel efficient one or factory map ?? 2) b- road map ( i.e not interested in launching or speed over 100 tuts) 3) can more popping only really be achived via ant-lag & decat ? Not a big issue but i get some just now and i love em' Thanks for the advice - I ain't expecting to get huge gains but I plan on keeping my car for a while and want it to run nice and smooth. More torque is really the order of the day Cheers Calum
Gumball Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005 Andy F. madde some changes to mine, got andy to map ot and the figures and perfoamance changes are awesome. worth the journey
Bing Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005 Cal, Im no modding genius but I were to choose 1 I'd lose the up pipe cos of the following: 1) With winter being here the charge temps will be cool so the std intercooler shold be Ok, at least till April next year when its a bit warmer 2) A decat up pipe would protect the turbo from flying bots of a 'cat' , dare that ever happen! Although, the intercooler is obviously the easiest and quickest thing to change Not sure about what map to go for also, the order of the day would have to be 'Torque please mister'
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005 Doesn't sound like a two minute job though .............I believe the old up-pipes from Classics fit WRX's too though Speak to you before d-day Stevio ! Don't know if I'll hang around Port Seaton till your done though. Straight back to Abz me finks and possibly get on the Datek rollers at Wallace performance. I think i might get an uprated intercooler hose too - smoother air flow and made of stronger material Cal
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005 Hmmmmmmm..........this sounds good "Prodrive has estimated around 10 horsepower from the replacement SAMCO Intake hose - and they are correct! We recommend the intake hose rather than removing the third cat, because it makes a more effective increase in power... AND is legal. Our customers have reported a noticeable improvement at each installation. Indeed while mapping ECUs, the Intake hose is so effective that we use a different boost map when one is installed to avoid overshooting!" Source of this quote w.r.t Samco hose ........ How long do these take to fit and is a homer possible guys ? I presume it's easy ?? I'm tempted
WUZ Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005 Cal - its a doddle to do - 15 minutes and your done! Russell
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005 Thanks Russell - just need to find one in the next 24 hrs ! (note to self - this is the ones I need) I really ought to go to bed !
Fonzy Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005 Dave, Had my version 5 type r remapped by Gavin a while ago and it's still going strong. Off the topic but am I right in saying that you live up the road from me? Stewart Milne houses up the back of Blackburn. I have an MTM one. Allan
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005 Nope that Dave Clutterbuck (Clutdav) and he has a Wallace map for his K&N induction etc ....... Cheers Cal
clutdav Posted October 10, 2005 Author Posted October 10, 2005 Howdy guys, I did go and get a remap from Gavin in the end. I have had the remap now for around a month I suppose and the car is going really well. I have the K&N Typhoon CAI and a 2.5" Cat back Magnex system on the car. SO in other words she still has both catalytic converters in. SHe made 300bhp and 290 lbs/ft and as a result pulls really hard in all gears including 6th. Cal can testify to this as I took him out for a little spin at the Wallace Performance RR day last month and I managed to hurt his neck slightly when I was accelerating. Also Cal have you found anywhere that does these Samco intercooler hoses and if so how much as it could be a very easy mod for some quick BHP. I suppose the second question is does my remap need to be done again to make the most of it?? Dave PS: Fonzy - you are correct in your assumption as to my whereabouts. Where are you based.
Boyakasha Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005 Cal, give me a call I know where you can get these hoses but the chances of them arriving in time would be slim.
clutdav Posted October 10, 2005 Author Posted October 10, 2005 << Cal, give me a call I know where you can get these hoses but the chances of them arriving in time would be slim. >> COuld you PM me the details aswell Marc please. Don't worry I am still working on the Mrs for the splitter.............it is turning out to be more difficult than I initially thought it would be. Bugger........... Dave
Boyakasha Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005 You better be working hard at it then, as I have got that splitter sorted on the premise you were going to buy it. Number for Rally Designs is 01795 531871
st3ph3n Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005 This is all top info. I will add it to my excel spreadsheet list of mods for next year. If I was to get a full Samco hose set would it come with the afore-pictured hose, and is the full set actually worth the dosh? All I need to do now is win the lottery or get a job that pays twice as much to fund this list.
fai17 Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005 Do yous know if you need that samco hose for the STI? Will it make any more BHP on a STI? Thanks.
Boyakasha Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005 Peter it will not make as much difference on an STi as they already are silicon, but on the WRX they are crappy plastic which can crack on high boost/heat. Always best to upgrade your STi one if you are going for more power. Marc
