clutdav Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Well I have just had the K&N Typhoon induction kit fitted to the car. Oh my god what a difference - the engine revs so freely now and the recirculating dump valve chatters away on gear shifts. The quality of the kit is first class - I can't fault it at all, everything fitted perfectly. The filter is relocated to the front drivers side wing so no problem with cold air feeds. With the window down you get this wonderful sucking noise on acceleration. Anyway, this is what it all looks like...........engine bay looks empty now. Dave
dougster Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Looks nice but are you planning more mods as it appears ott for just having a de-cat??? Is the diameter of the new pipe fitted exactly the same as the OEM one?
clutdav Posted August 16, 2005 Author Posted August 16, 2005 Why do you say OTT without further mods??? The diameter of the induction intake is slightly bigger than standard, coupled with a high flow filter gives loads of cold air. All I can say is that the engine really seems to like it, as she revs so much more freely all the way from idle to the limiter. The kit comes with a BHP increase guarantee, so they must be very confident that it works well. And if it doesn't for some strange reason then they will refund the cost of the kit and the labour for fitting and removing it. Dave
scuba dou Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 This is the kit RCM fit; works fine when you are on the move. After a bit of DIY work with the "cold pipe" and bit of drilling to the fog light cover.
clutdav Posted August 16, 2005 Author Posted August 16, 2005 Can't open the picture you posted!!! Dave
Nelsdir Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Think your gonna get a few replies recommending a remap with all that extra air your flowing Forced induction/cold air kits without a remap can cause lean running = DET which is bad !! Who fitted it BTW as I'm looking to get one? Neil
clutdav Posted August 16, 2005 Author Posted August 16, 2005 << Think your gonna get a few replies recommending a remap with all that extra air your flowing Forced induction/cold air kits without a remap can cause lean running = DET which is bad !! I got mine fitted and supplied through CHeckpoint in Aberdeen. I have a friend that works there so I get money off. Dave
Iaing Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Bought a similar kit, but decided not to fit it on recommendation of several people (including mappers). I will be waiting for a re-map. I'd rather not risk blowing my engine up. Iain
clutdav Posted August 16, 2005 Author Posted August 16, 2005 Well all I can say is that my friend has been running the exact same kit on a '04 STi for over 12 months and nothing has gone wrong. It is my understanding that the factory ecu is adaptable and modifies the fuel maps according to the increased air flow. That's what I am led to believe anyway - although I may be corrected................... Dave
jasonb Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 It looks very nice and cant see it causing you any problems so enjoy it
scoobymadburd Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Hi Like the mods!!! Our car is similar and our AFR gauge has showed no difference on it since puttin the filter behind the wing. so maybe a remap is not needed for all cars for it to run properly. claire

It wont go the full way needed to stop your car from Det'ing. The car will try to stop it from happening but your running the risk more and more. There is a few mapper which will tell you this and some kit manufacturers will tell you not to put them on unless you have remapped the ecu. At the end of the day m8 its your car, we are just trying to help you keep it health. Hope you have fun with it m8
darryll Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 aint the k & Ns bad on scoobys well so i was told by a very good source. i was told the K&Ns are oiled filters and the oil gets sucked from the filter on to a hot wire that buggers the car up but i aint to sure about this so i would look in to it a bit.
Boyakasha Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Dave I would seriously consider getting a remap very soon, Induction kits on New Age STis are bad news without one. You got a really nice car and it would be a shame for the engine to go bang, just because the CEL light isn't on doesn't mean the car is running well. I would suggest a visit to Gavin at Wallace Performance or a trip down to see AndyF, they'll sort you out and at least you will know the car is running correct. Marc
imprezapete Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Get yourself: Full decat - Centre,down-pipe and up-pipe + Uprated fuel pump - Walbro 255 + Remap - Andy Forrest = as your car will be faster and safer. Also did you get the water proof sock for the K&N filter? Also some of the guys are right, they can be a bit well oiled. May kill your MAF, small chance but its possible.
