oobster Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 As above.... I went out this morning & washed a couple of spots of bird crap off the car, i noticed that two that had landed on the bonnet appear to have damaged the paint. I've tried t-cutting but it's made almost no difference. Am i looking @ getting the bonnet painted to get rid of this or are there any products etc anyone is aware of that I can try? The bonnet does have a few chips here n there, so if you think painting would be the best i'd appreciate advice on anyone who can do this in the Edinburgh to Glasgow corridor, has to be someone who will get a perfect colour match. Any advice appreciated.
spooks Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 Kinda in the same boat, a few mark on my car thanks to birds, nothing sems to get rid of it no matter what kind of compund you try. Not sure if its something to do with the bonnet not being steel and reacting? If you find out what gets rid of it let me know. Spooks
oobster Posted July 24, 2005 Author Posted July 24, 2005 Looks like i'll need to get it painted. As i said in previous post, there are a few stone chips (which the previous owner has obviously tried to touch up using FAR too much paint), so i can get all that fixed at the same time. So..... come on folks, recommendations please! I've used Derek down @ Nobles before to do the side-skirts, but although i was more than happy with the work he's a fair bit away. I've been told that red is murder for matching, so if anyone can recommend a bodyshop that can paint the whole bonnet (off the car) then i'd love to know. Also, being the impatient git that i am, a place that can do it quite quickly. Ta
chesney Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 Try Meguiars Scratch X. It's pretty good at removing light scratches. DOes a good job of getting marks off in my experience and even if it doesn't work on your problem its handy to have.
spooks Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 Got bored so looked around Try this for your answer. Spooks
oobster Posted July 24, 2005 Author Posted July 24, 2005 I'll give that a bash when Autostores opens 2moro!! Good job my boss is on holiday this week, Unless u got any spooks?
drb5 Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 Good luck to all!!! If you get rid of the marks completely, i'll eat my hat! But if you would rather save yourself some money towards the respray, don't bother buying any products to try remove them, it won't work......unless it really isn't that bad?
oobster Posted July 25, 2005 Author Posted July 25, 2005 Dave To be honest, i'm now thinking i'd rather pay for the respray, the bonnet does have more than a few stonechips on it. I'll speak to the guy @ the bodyshop tomorrow morning, if he reckons he can paint it & match the colour exactly, then i'll book it in.
drb5 Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 They don't have to COLOUR the whole bonnet, only lacquer it, so it should have the colour blended in fine.
tayscooby Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 I got rid of a good few marks on my car using a clay bar....honestly looks like painting might be the best option as you will never be happy unless stone chips gone..
Fee Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 I dont remember bird poo ever being this bad though.....everytime i get bird poo on my car it leaves a mark.... they must be sh*tting acid or something! I got a big one on my bonnet this morning....tried to give it a quick wash before leaving for work, but think I'm going to have to jet wash it later....I hope it doesnt leave a big mark
Gumball Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 LOL I dont get it on mine. I think they know blues the fastest colour.
oobster Posted July 25, 2005 Author Posted July 25, 2005 Been to two separate bodyshops today and they both say it needs painted (i suppose they would say that though). Quoted from one place - £200, with the car off the road for 2 days, other place was £360 with 4 days off the road. Both say the the colour-match should be fine, as the sun does bleach all paints but red in particular. But with my car only being 2 years old the sun wont have had much chance to do it's damage. Car goes in on Thursday for a full bonnet respray.
Gumball Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 thats bad news Andy Sorry to hear that its going to cost so much to fix it The only other thing you can do is drive it everywhere from now on as though you stole it That would save you getting it resprayed, go for the rally effect
Johnny50 Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 And there was me thinking that it was an excuse to go get a WRC bonnet fitted.
oobster Posted July 25, 2005 Author Posted July 25, 2005 It didn't help that i tried to t-cut the bird-crap mark out, and managed to t-cut right through the clear topcoat laquer and start removing the red underneath I did consider purchasing a carbon-fibre replacement & getting it painted, but cash aint as plentiful as it was earlier in the year unfortunately. I shall need to be extra-vigilant from now on & make sure any bird-crap is washed off. I don't think i'll be purchasing too many mods from now on
andrew_lally Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 You can get a carbon fibre number for roughly the cost of the second quote!!!! chavtastic hahaha cheers andy
oobster Posted July 25, 2005 Author Posted July 25, 2005 Yea, i did think that 2nd quote was rather expensive.
Gumball Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 ive got a carbon fibre bonnet with an STI8 carbon scoop if you want it Andy? Cheap
st3ph3n Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 I've just had an email from a mate who also bought a WRX from motorpoint (after seeing mine, convinced him not to get a Diesel Golf). He's attacked some bird crap with some water then some DETTOL (WTF?) and he's left some marks. He says you can only see it when its pointed out, but I'm imagining the worst. I've recommended that he give the car a good present and give it a proper wash with proper equipment and products. I think he's in the once monthly fairy liquid brigade, so I don't imagine it's in the best condition. So I'm going to meet him at Halfords and make him buy the entire stock of Meguiars products. Then force him, at gun point if need be, to wash his car at the worst once a fortnight. That £360 quote is ridiculous. I'm almost certain that Arnold Clark did my Vectra's bonnet (stone impact led to rust) for about the £200 mark. And they were a ridiculously over priced dealer.
oobster Posted July 25, 2005 Author Posted July 25, 2005 Yea, i don't think they wanted the work, they specialise in insurance work so i think the £360 quote was a "F@@K OFF" price. Gumball has used this company recently i believe. The car is now going into a proper bodyshop that i've used several times in the past, and he's quoting me £150 cash. He might even manage to get the car back to me the same day, depending on how busy he is. Chris - thanks for the offer but i'll pass, cheers anyway.
oobster Posted July 28, 2005 Author Posted July 28, 2005 Car went into the bodyshop this morning, i definitely won't get it back till tomorrow afternoon.
wrxmania Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 McCartney's? Good bodyshop - but mainly insurance - that's where the money is - you no doubt got an insurance company's price. Julie's uncle Hugh McCartney owns the chain. He has done some work for me in the past. Brian
Stiks Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 << . The car is now going into a proper bodyshop that i've used several times in the past, and he's quoting me £150 cash. . >> Oobster, Could you PM me the name and telephone no of your bodyshop. I have a wee scuff on the front N/s wheel arch and two car park dings I need to get done. Sounds like your guy will do it at a reasonable price. Thanks Keith
