Looking for some advice.

I am considering buying a 1999 or 2000 Impreza turbo 2000 wagon. I have wanted one for ages and always been put off by others telling me that the fuel consumption is horrendous (sp?) and servicing costs are expensive.

Can someone clear this up.

1. What like is the fuel consumption - And I know it all comes down to how its driven but an average daily driving.

2. What like are the servicing cost at a dealer and what is the service intervals.

3. Someone told me that to replace spark plugs half the engine needs dimantling - is that a load of blah

I would appreciate if I get answers to the above, I have been research for a little while but found mixed answers to the above

Cheers guys

hi m8,

IF you boot a scooby turbo you will use a lot of optimax! however if you dont go mad all the time 25+ mpg is no problem face-icon-small-smile.gif

servicing is not mad dear, just remember to change the oil (for a very good oil) regularly, and try and buy a car with 4 pot front brakes, these last longer and work better than 2 pots, though even these will munch pads if hoofed all the time face-icon-small-smile.gif

spark plugs, easy as pie to change, and last for ages! worry not, a scooby (unless modded) is very reliable and wont let you down, even if its been modded it should be ok, DEPENDING who has done the work!! keep to bill greer, the garage in wishaw, george "torque" through glasgow way, do a search on the garage you are thinking of getting to do the work on here before getting any work done!!

and be VERY CAREFULL of the car you buy, there are a heaps of cars out there that have been thrashed to the edge and back again! 4 of them have been mine!! face-icon-small-smile.gif

kye mackay has very good cars, but he is a bit dear, but all his stuff is straight from nippon and in a1 condition, go for a sti if you can afford it, the spec is much better!!

and most of all................. get some new credit cards ...............you are going to need them!!! face-icon-small-smile.gif

Welcome matey

Quick answers to your Q's

1, combined fuel approx 25mpg, 30 on long runs off boost and around 9mpg on track!

2,service costs, £100ish for small service £350ish for big services

3,plugs, easy enough. remove airbox, battery and washer bottle. 10min jobface-icon-small-wink.gif

Hope that helps

Thanks for the replies guys, puts my mind at rest and its time to start hunting for straight (hopefully one grandad owner) scooby.

I am driving a BMW 328 at the mo - would running costs be similar?

@ robinh20mrv - you mention you for a model with the 4 pot, what models have the 4 pot and are they standard. I will be looking for a UK car from 1999 on.

Is there any other advice you guys can offer i.e. things to look for etc...

TIA

hi m8,

the sti,s have four pot brakes (i think) they are also higher spec, power, brakes, interior ect! though i think they are jap imports only

(i think) but they are much better cars than the uk spec, and all you have to do is get them rustproofed, not dear £100/£150 for a good job!

trawl round the dealers and have look see!!!

cheers robin.

the general running cost isn,t too bad, about the same as your BMW

i had a E36 325i ages ago and my STI8 is about the same in fuel.

i would defo reccomend Bill Greer at Greersport but that depend where you're from.

and welcome to the best club in U.K m8

RobinH2omrv:are you selling your Merc already, back to Scooby ownership i hope.(GEMS ECU remember)

MY99 onwards have 4 pots (as far as UK Cars go anyway, unsire about JDM)

Although, plenty have been upgraded nowadays.

Running costs probably wont be too different from your 328i.

Oh...and welcome ! face-icon-small-smile.gif

hi fai,

how are you getting on with the gems? all good i trust face-icon-small-smile.gif the mercs ok, just done 4 new tires and some ice into her, its a great car, went away up north and it was fine.................zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz i have to face the fact that i am a total hooligan and i cant do that in the merc face-icon-small-smile.gifface-icon-small-smile.gif so spec c i think, though for 30k i could get a cracking porker! and that my friend is a hooligans car in stealth mode!!!

then of course the spec "c" would need 10k dropped in to it to make it go worth a sook! ie tubular headers, zorst system, aps innerwing indution kit, injectors (650cc) turbo td05/20g, intercooler and thats just the basics!!!! and thats in to 355 money face-icon-small-smile.gif

i will just have to see what comes along in a few months as i am working my tail off just now!!

happy days m8!!

cheers robin.

Another question, sorry guys but who better to ask than yourselves

What is the service intervals? 7.5k, 10k or 15k - I've been told 3 different intervals by different. but what is the truth

When is the cam belt due for a change? 45k ???

Would I be better looking for a sub 40k car or one that has just done over 45K as the belts would (should) have been changed.

Again TIA

Hi m8 and welcome

The classics are 7.5k or 6 months for servicing (i think) but i change my oil and filter every 3k.

The Cam belt is 36 months or 45k
