I've started to mod my car and straight away the clutch f**ked itself on its first test after exhaust and intercooler fitted. I am a mechanic by trade, but with renault so not sure on the best approach to replacing the clutch on my impreza. What would be the best clutch to go for bearing in mind i am aiming for 350 - 400 bhp in the future, so dont want to have to do it again. Oh and where is the best place to get a clutch or can any of yous supply... thanks si....face-icon-small-smile.gif

Clutch replacement on a Scooby is easy enoughface-icon-small-smile.gif and under good conditions with a ramp etc its possible in around four hours. For the average punter its probably going to take a few more hours.

If your looking at that kind of power then its probably better to spend the cash on a good un'. So no std parts there thenface-icon-small-tongue.gif

Try pricing the likes of Helix, Lateral performance, Exedy and even Cuscoface-icon-small-shocked.gif

Look at what each one can offer. Weigh them up against the Lbf/Bhp they can hold. Go for the one that will fit your needsface-icon-small-smile.gifface-icon-small-smile.gif

Dont take the engine out!! Thats just hard work.

Pull the box out, it takes around an hour to do so.

I.C removed

Starter off

D Pipe removed, and then its best to whip the rest of the system off as its just in the way and only takes a minute to pop it off the four rubbers

Remove under trays

Drain gearbox oil

Rear prop off

Front shafts off

Gear linkage off

Split plugs (electrics)

Remove Box mounts

Note that the front shafts wont come right off until you pull the box back a little as they need that little bit more room to slip off the splined outputs.

Also, the thrust fork pivot needs to be removed before splitting as the thrust/ release bearing is held into the centre of the plate.

To remove the pivot you need to remove the plug from the N/s of the bell housing (Alan socket required, 8 or 10mm, cant remember) then screw in a 6mm bolt and pull the pivot out of the box

Its basic stuff, you wont have a problem face-icon-small-wink.gif

Hi Si,

Power too much for you now face-icon-small-happy.gif

Maybe I should have limited you to one mod at a time, lol

I was running a sachs clutch with no probs, although it wasn't as much power as you are aiming at.

Si, Jamie is correct in that you don't need to take the engine out (the procedure he described is spot-on), but if you have more to do, like a timing belt, plugs etc, dropping the engine AND BOX isn't a bad idea. If you had access to a 2 post ramp, dropping an engine and box out can take around 75 - 90 mins depending on whats seized. I had a AP paddle in a Legacy I had years ago and would not recommend it, however, I put a Helix clutch in a modded Celica GT4 that I had, and it was superb.

I have a lateral performance clutch just fitted to mine with a slightly lightened OE flywheel. My car isn't anywhere near the power output limits of the clutch (i think it's rated to 350) but it drives just as well as the stock one (slight noticable pick up on acceleration due to lightened flywheel!)

I don't know yet how well the clutch'll live but i've not heard bad reports about them.

You can get a borg and beck clutch for less than that (Check over at SN)are only rated up to 300bhp. I've no idea who technic clutch are and for the sake of a few quid, i'd rather go for a named brand (Do you want to have to change the clutch again??)

Just saying never heard of them and i wouldn't like to risk having to take the clutch out again. Besides i think Si is looking to spend a bit of dosh on mods, so why scrimp on the clutch. No point in having 400bhp if you can't get it into gear face-icon-small-happy.gif

p.s i've seen flip paint and big spoilers in Banzai too.....but i wouldn't put them on my car face-icon-small-confused.gif

Did i suggest he get a b&b clutch for 400bhp? I was pointing out it's better to get a known brand rather than an unknown quantity that'll go pop. In my opinion you get what you pay for (in most cases)

Not starting an argument but jcscoob's little green stealth machine face-icon-small-tongue.gif must be putting out a good bit more

than 300bhp and is only going to go up with the mods that are on the way soon. The clutch he's just got is

a very good clutch and should handle the power no probs, so i think it was a good suggestion by jcscoobface-icon-small-wink.gif

Also the banzi mag is very good and features alot of good stuff, i would rather read that than something

like MAX POWERface-icon-small-blush.gif
