st3ph3n Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 I was 17 and I got a new Civic hatchback. It was an "illusion" special edition, so it was cheap. It came in supersonic blue, which when clean on a sunny day looked viper-blue, but it was purple any other day of the year. Fantastic little car. The 1.4 didn't really put out a lot of power, but you sat so low, and it was a wide car so handled quite nicely. This was before F+F, so all the Chavs didn't know how easy it was to mod a civic. I didn't to anything other than stereo and replacing the illusion sticker on the boot with a type-r badge, and some mugen ones over the front arches. My brother got it after me and he loved it too. I can't remember the insurance.

When it was cold had to keep the revs up all the time, even when braking! Least i dont have that cr~p to deal with now! .....yet i still seem to spend a fortune day-to-day on the scoob
the squiggle Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 << Suzuki Sj 410 with 20" spinners >> Well it did have 17's with big fook off BF Goodrich mud tyres and a flamer kit, well the petrol that went in the exhaust occasionally built up and KER_BOOM out the back end. Grant

dave_morgan Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 << (Eyes glaze over...) It was a 1966 mini cooper s, in the days before minis took off again in the early 90s. It would be worth a fortune if I had kept it, but it was well worn by 1987 anyway. I smashed the front end the second day I had it and my dad leathered me within an inch of my life! He put a glass fibre front end on it and connected the wiring by way of a caravan power socket so I could take the front end off completely. The 1275 block was replaced by a 1380 with omega pistons, and I used the cooper s steel rods and steel crankshaft. By the time I sold it she had a Jack Knight staight cut gearbox, kent 276 cam, 1.5 highlift roller rockers and a Longman stage 3 head. The carb was a single 45 webber and I cut an airbox into the bulkhead and made it out of a steel drawer from a filing cabinet. Janspeed 3-1 manifold, janspeed exhaust and an aldon dizzy with luminition. about 98bhp @ the wheels so 108 at the flywheel through a comp clutch and the JK box. Callum W >> Sounds a bit like my 2nd car !! 1978 1275 GT. Started off completely standard (as I was a skint student) and ended up as a 1400 (74mm omega pistons), s/c box and drop gears, 1.5 rockers, mental cam, stg3 head, lightened flywheel and backplate, 45dcoe carb (with battery box in bulkhead) rc40, lcb manifold, luminition, hi-los, detatchable front end and a nice set of 13" Alley Cats fitted with rubberband Pirelli P7f's! Ah, those were the days. Nothing beats the induction roar from a side draft weber pointing straight at your ear drums or the whine from them straight cuts !! End result - a very quick wee beast, and an even more skint student !!
Don Mega Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 First car was a 1991 pug 205 1.1, was 17 and under dads name for insurance.. still 480 quid for 3rd party F+T. great fun to drive though, think i had the back wheel off the ground a couple of times flying round the corners lol. dan_osbourne Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Mg Metro Turbo (E Reg) in white 17 years old and tpft was over a grand with a 500 squid excess, blew up every 5 minutes
allan_thorne Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Mini Clubman SMS 835P cost me £350.00 to insure tpft and that was back in 1981.
Iaing Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 I had a 4 door Rover Metro Gta !! Ace car till the hydrostatic suspension blew on one side on the way to college and cost me £300 to fix. I managed to limp the car to college and parked, all the young boys that walked past it thought it was ace that low. Ha ha Iain
Johnny50 Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 I used to do that too.... Best handling mod on the Metros was to have seperate hydroelastic tanks at the back, rather than use the one that split between the two sides, so that when cornering, the car stayed flat, rather than tilting when the fluid moved from one side to another... Great fun !
