~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 In my opinion, we really could do with distinct different sections within the Scottish Scoobies Forum........... e.g Events & Announcements General Technical Banter / Jokes Newbies Was it you ? Post Events Gallery, Videos Whats everyones thoughts ? For £30 quid a year a feel this shouldn't be too much to ask ? I know there is the SIDC section itself but I feel we'd benefit from our own sections ? Please dont flame me for this ! I'm only thinking of us all and the future of our squadron Thanks Cal
Carl Davey Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 What're you suggesting Cal? Scottish Scoobes has outgrown the SIDC? Personally i'm quite happy here but i'd gladly help out on the IT side of things if required. Things do move very quickly in this forum but i do like having everything under the one umbrella if you see what i mean?
zeolite Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 In a word Cal...No... This is home and this is fine. I am grateful to be here and IMHO it works fine.
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted April 6, 2005 Author Posted April 6, 2005 Like i say - I'm just interested in peoples thoughts. Even 3 sections or more stickies would tidy thimgs up a bit ?
CAZ1562 Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 It wouldn't surprise me to see a few sub categories appearing once we purchase our new forum software Yes things do move a little quick in this area.
wilky Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 In theory yes, because when we have our stupid head on we can go to the fun area, techo babble at the tech section etc. In practice, no it is empire building and as Carl Said looks like we are getting too big for our boots, keep it simple, lets be indians, the chiefs can do the thinking The other Callum
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted April 6, 2005 Author Posted April 6, 2005 Sounds good to me Derek but I guess some peeps are happy with the current format......nowt wrong with that. I just thing it would ne nice to have some sections to save sifting through the entire list of threads e.g go offshore for 3 weeks with no www access and when you come back you'll have ahell of a job sniffin' out what interests you. Please note my post is intended to be constructive - I'm a mellow fellow as most of you know Cal
fraser_drinkwater Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 Fair one as i disappear for 3 and a half months so think yourself lucky.lol but hey, i can see summin there Cal, but we are the SIDC, which in turn brings up more questions of mine. I think we do ok bud, the chaos keeps us on our toes. lmfaro THE SWIGG... We will see what happens with the new software, that sounds good.
martin_brown Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 I agree to an extent mate but what would probably help is when you run the mouse over the topic then you get the first 3 or 4 lines of the topic displayed. Other forums that i use - which shall remain nameless for fear of recrimination - have this feature and it helps with whether you want to read something or not. Sadly it doesn't stop the usual my car's better than yours AND it's a diesel malarkey So, how easy would that be to do then?
gordon_kerr Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 I am with you on this one Cal, there are nights/ times when this place is quiet ( especially for shift workers) and it becomes really boring, new features would be a plus !!!
CAZ1562 Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 There's different forum software currently being reviewed at present.
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted April 6, 2005 Author Posted April 6, 2005 Excellent news Keep up the good work - you're efforts are appreciated I'd like to see this functionality :- ----------------------------------- View posts since last visit View your posts View unanswered posts ------------------------------------- I know you can subscribe to threads and click on "Today" but I miss these functions Thanks Cal
willie Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 OK we are just about to launch a test server whilst we evaluate a new piece of software on a larger scale. I can confirm that we won't be using Vbulletin or indeed the new version of Fusetalk. Our main aim will be the following : easy integration of the membership database - so when you see member next to the name it will mean exactly that. the ability to switch on things like scottishscoobies member decent picture hosting blogs sub categories and lots of nice other toys. The overall project has taken almost a year to get this far and it will probably take another 3-6 months before its totally ready.
wrxmania Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 Good on you Willie, I am sure it will be an improvement, both administratively and for the users. Brian
micra_wrc Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 Cal, i see where you are coming from and agree that it does get quite muddled in here as threads move so fast. I too would like to see the main scottish scoobies forum split into some categories e.g. general, forthcoming events and technical. From what Derek and Willie are saying, things are in the pipeline. Lets just see what happens and hopefully we may get some subcategories when the chiefs implement the new software. The extra traffic and number of Newbies is encouraging and i think the growth of scottish scoobes is a reflection on how good we have it here. Imy
phil Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 Hi Guys Glad your enjoying life with the SIDC IMHO I personally wouldn't want to see too many additional sections within Scottish because that would dilute the great contribution you guys make to the other forums on this board. I however must agree you could do with more than one Lets get this new software running and then perhaps we can look at what is the best route THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT GUYS Its makes all the c**p I went through worth it
wrxmania Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 It was worth it Phil, although we do not know the details - I can only refer to the crap that forum users of another site "went through" in the lead up to Scottish Scoobies. I hope the support and growth of this section by new and old members has been a vindication that, when all the flak has faded in the past, it was worth it. We certainly thank you for that. Brian
Stiks Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 I like it as is it is ... and I do view and post in the other sections. I think a more insular Scottish Scoobies would encourage a lazy B like me to roam a little less across all of SIDC. Also lets not forget all the hassle some of us had at the other place. Keep it simple. I'm sure the new software will be refreshing for everyone. Keith
Grovit Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 << Please note my post is intended to be constructive - I'm a mellow fellow as most of you know Cal >> I see what you're saying Calsonic and think Derek and Phil's comments are also quite positive. However, too many subsections could be a bit of a nightmare to administer. One idea might be just a general request to forum posters (maybe as a thread sticky) to start each thread title with a brief description: eg - Joke - Vicar and french maid Technical - suspension allignment help required please. General - Got a NIP through the post last night - arrrggghhh!! Of course, to be honest this will be a bit of a nightmare to get started and not everyone will want to identify the type of post that it is, in the thread title - however this may make identifying the type of post that it is a bit easier.......... Good idea or load a rubbish.................???
p3dro Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 I do worry that we will drift from the SIDC a little, I'm a lazy B too and don't have time to flick through lots of different sections so think I would lose out slightly on my browsing. Not the end of the world tho' I will still be here
Marky-San Posted April 7, 2005 Posted April 7, 2005 I like it the way it is - its not as if theres a gizillion posts every day anyway - plus all the new ones are highlight for you. As one its nice and bust, separated, it might be a bit slow. Plus, I dont want to click my mouse anymore than I need too
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted November 15, 2005 Author Posted November 15, 2005 Any news on the new software guys ? Is it likely to happen or is there no real definitive answer...... Remeber we DO appreciate your efforts...........I'm just curious Thanks Cal
Paulmc Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 I would love to pay my £30 but can't see the point until the new software goes in as it seems like it takes months to get into the members section
sma01 Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 paul mc - dont think that should necessarily be the case mate, once you have a membership number you should get access, you might want to try emailing Phil Stephens with your membership number and am sure he will help you out, he got me sorted Scott
dougster Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 That is indeed the case but as the IT guys are busy working on new software. Supporter tags and membership entry are the last on the list of things to do. HTH
