Here's the crack with Dastek and Scoobies.

Got a mail from Gerry at Dastek today.

He has asked me to clear up the matter on the forum as he isn't an SIDC member.

It is as follows, and I think it explains the situation very well.

<< It was just to say that we still do Scoobies with the Unichip, but we want to test them on the dyno before we book a date for the Unichip, as we see so many cars that are modified but without thought to things like fuel delivery, or injector sizes, or we are seeing lots of older higher mileage (tired) cars that are booked in tying the dyno up for 1/2 a day, only to have them arrive & find out there are many fundamental faults i.e. ECU light on, MAF sensor faults, misfires etc. Also we have a new Unichip coming out around spring to summer which will do direct injector override, full variable cam timing, traction control, 3D gear dependant closed loop boost map, alter closed loop lambda operation, MAF sensor removal map + much much more, hence we have decided with all heavily modified vehicles to await the new Unichip. >>

<< Hope that clears matters up. >>

<< cheers >>

well............i hear cars that have been booked in are being told to go away/come back later, as for "tired" scoobys, when i called to book in my new (7k) sti v8 ra i was told i had to do a "power run" b4 mapping, why? £££££££££££ perhaps?

steve simpson from GEMS came from englandshire and mapped my car in a afternoon.........without any "power runs" just on with the det cans and away we go!

your views please..........or do i smell a large mapping rodent?

cheers robin "any wheels for sale" galloway.

My car had the power run before it was mapped though.

I think its best since 1) You want to know what the starting power is and 2) The power run shows up and faults the car has under load.

its mapped on the RR so it will need to be pre run on the RR too.

Steve Simpson will do the same, just that he will check it on the open raod since its getting mapped on the open road.

Would that not seem right???

P.s just cause I'm running the Unichip, it dont mean Im fighting their corner.

I'm only saying what I think, it might be wrongface-icon-small-blush.gif

so will all who have a "old" uni chip get a remap for the "new" uni chip then? ££££££££££££££££££££££££?

sounds a bit smelly to me, gems-motech are expensive, BUT you dont get told your car cant be mapped for what ever reson......................its called AFTER SALES SERVICE!! or have i missed somthing?

what if i had a unichip now and i had a problem? eeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrr down to tsl? dastech not playing?

as i say, it smells, MY VIEW ONLY.

cheers robin.

ps if dastech are not on here, why not? and for the record, STEVE SIMPSON OF GEMS, did not want a "pre power run" he just got the cans on and got on with it..........................AND if i have a problem or need a remap for a new intercooler ect, he is here (or sam elsar aka "the dentist" within 24/36 hours, AFTER SALES SERVICE!!

unlike dastech it would seem..................................................

just my thoughts................

phil/dougster/guys, i am trying to keep it correct, i just think gems/motec give you after sales service........ how hard is it to get hold of bob rawle/sam elsar/steve simpson? mmmmmmm ie not hard, what if i (like some guys) had a uni chip??) paddle and creek springs to mind!!

cheers robin.

Hi Guys,

Just here to clear a few things up, sorry I didn't join yesterday, but I thought you had to be an SIDC member.

The situation is basically how I described it to Jamie, but I'm here to answer a few questions that have been raised by Robin.

I'm not sure about the 'go away/come back later' comment, the only time we will turn a customer away is if there is a problem i.e. the fuel pressure drops under load, showing there is a fuel delivery problem, so may need a larger pump, or new filter etc. so whilst we could map it, it a bit of a waste of time for the customer & ourselves, we could of course carry out the repairs, but many people want to do this themselves, either for satisfaction or cost saving.

I'm curious what would have happened if Steve Simpson came up only to discover you had injectors that were too small, or a huge turbo, a FMIC, & a standard fuel pump, would he have still mapped it, if he diagnosed the fuel delivery as being too low for the power expected, would he say oh don't worry I'll just drive back down the road & come back another day when you've got it sorted?

The reason we now want to dyno the cars in the first place is because of the above scenario, it's fine to say why don't you book it in for a Unichip, do these tests then if it's fine map it, this is indeed what we used to do, however we were finding faulty MAF sensors, fuel pumps & injectors that were not suited etc, & then parts would need to be ordered or perhaps customers did not have the cash for the repairs & the Unichip, plus we were left with unutilised dyno time. So this is the reason we do the pre-inspection first & yes we charge for it, but if no faults show up, then we refund this cost upon fitment of the Unichip.

I'm guessing your asking if people will get a new version unichip in place of the old version that they originally purchased, the answer in no. Would you expect a new Scooby in place of your old one everytime they bring out a new model? We will still map them though if people make modifications. I feel I am actually offering good service in that I could offer the old version Unichip right up until the new version is available, but I'm prepared to say to people you would be better waiting for our new version, & potentially losing a sale at that moment.

I'm not sure where you have got the info about us not remapping cars that are already fitted with Unichips, this is not the case, it may be that we take longer to book people in than they think is acceptable, but there is only so much work I can do, I typically work 12 - 14 hours a day during the week & 8 - 10 hours on a Saturday, we are at the moment booked about 6 weeks in advance, but come the summer around 12 weeks is required for a slot, I know ideally I should put another dyno in place, but then the problem comes in finding someone that I can employ who can do the mapping, not easy! If a customer couldn't wait that long, then they could choose from over 50 Unichip dealers throughout the country (or 10 if 4WD) we do not lock the software to prevent other from modifying our maps.

If a customer with a Unichip or for that matter a GEMS, MoTeC, MBE ecu etc that we have fitted or have been responsible for the mapping of, is having a problem then we will get it in & rectify the fault usually within a couple of days, so I don't see that as being a problem.

I'm not sure what I've done or my company has done to upset you Robin, but I take all critisisms on board & use it to try & make my company better, so for that I thank you.

Cheers,

Gerry
