Brake Discs

Recommended Posts

Ok so I will no doubt need new discs at some point this year especially before nurburgring so without spending crazy money what do you recommend nd from where?

I had the above on my focus st and had no issues, granted I didn't track it. Just had the grooved ones.

Looked at ebc, tarox, black diamond but just don't know what is best.

Chris,

I have been looking at EBC vented, grooved and maybe drilled. With redstuff pads. Been advised to get Brembo discs. Also PF (performance friction) pads are meant to be the best, but the discs are pricey.

I think Aztec were doing them at a fair price. I bought new calipers to the front (4 pots) off Godspeed this week, the guys seem great. I am aware however some people don't like them.

had heard that the drilled brakes can cause issue as the drilling causes micro fractures, maybe I made that up tho :)

I had godspeed fast road pads and grooved discs on the Blob WRX and couldn't fault them.

Fitted the same stuff the the Hawk STI and didn't like them one bit. There was no feel and they lacked bite - someone said it could be down to the brembo's on the STI's holding more heat but who knows.

Then i went the whole hog and fitted a Performance Friction discs and Z rated pads along with fresh brake fluid and braided hoses. Got to say i can't fault them, not cheap but well worth it!

As above PF pads are very good.

IF you go performance friction - without rubbishing certain PF dealers, don't go for cheap bell options with PF rotors, get the genuine PF bells. I nearly did and am now saving for the real thing, I've heard not one good story about the non PF bells regardless of whose they are.

I recently had a chat with a member who bought some brembo fitment discs on eBay and was delighted with them, they weren't dear too.

Got couple of quotes from as performance and Godspeed. The Godspeed kit comes with warranty against warping. Roughly looking at 200 quid on both types. Godspeed are grooved and as performance are oem variants.

Looks like the redstuffpads pads are an issue but not sure why?

ebc yellow stuff or the race spec ebc blue(not road legal tho)

reds ones are ok but for enduro or hard braking they will cook..!!!

had a set of reds on a 330hp pulsar and one good track day they were fcuked..

they polished the disc and pads were as shiney as hell

as for what the ring will do to a set is unthinkable.

Godspeed has probably as many supporters as non supporters. His warranty claims are decided by him after youve paid for your already suspect discs to be posted which isnt cheap and even worse if he decides they are not to be replaced.

That said, I've had GS rear discs and Kevlar pads on the RA for 2yrs now without issue.

I've yet to find an unhappy ASP customer.

Redstuff pads are kak. There are so many other better options including Pagid, Mintex, Ferodo and PF.

Have you tracked on the Kevlar pads?

Lewis I had heard that pagid, mintec and ferodo are crap. Get redstuff if not PF i was told. End of the day everyone has there own opinion. Don't think i would be running redstuffs on a track mind you as they are aimed at high bhp road cars.

is it the orangestuff for tracks?

I would stick with Alyn at AS Performance I have been buying parts from Alyn for the road and race car for years and the service is excellent. There are discs and then there are discs! Alyn will give you an honest assessment with no obligation and his prices are very keen. PF Z rated pads are an excellenet all round pad but not cheap, PF01 are also good pads but the dust eats wheels as I can testify to, some of the newer pagid compounds are very effective and not too expensive and kinder to wheels. I would also advise staying away from discs that are drilled all the way through. It really depends what you want to do with the car, I have groved discs from Alyn, not expensive discs all round on the road car with PF Z rated pads on Brembo calipers and the brakes are more than good enough for road use. Only reason I have the PF pads is they were on the race car when i took the Brembo's off, if changing on the road car I would prob go to a pagid compound.

Another vote for alyn at AS performance. Got brembo discs and brembo sport pads alround from him.

how much do they come in at paul. Looking to upgrade in august/ september. Was going to go brembo discs with red stuff or pf z pads. Are the brembo pads good.

thank you

Its been a while since I bought them so cant remember the price I'm afraid. When I bought the blob my brakes were pretty poor. I bought the discs pads and braided lines from Alyn and there is a massive difference. Best to phone him for a price.

Thanks Paul, will search for his details :)
