mctwistuk Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Car got serviced today and I asked them to tighten the handbrake. When I picked it up they said the handbrake was at the end of its adjustment and to tighten it more thy would need to strip calipers down etc. is this true? Chris
davey l wrx Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 2 adjustments on scoobs i do believe one on the handbrake and one does mean stripping the rear end of the car down to get to the adjusters in the drum unit.
DR Motosport Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 The handbrake shoes inside the rear discs are self adjusting and have nothing to do with the calipers (unlike an audi or vw). If this is at the end of adjustment it will need new shoes and that's pretty rare to wear them out. If the cable needs adjusting that is done under the handbrake with a 10mm spanner If that's at the end of adjustment, pack it with a few washers.

mctwistuk Posted April 11, 2013 Author Posted April 11, 2013 Will need to see if scoobywho knows this fix for when he helps me do the rear pads on the 350z and bleeds the brakes
badbaz Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Handbrake shoes can be adjusted through a hole, the self adjusting system doesn't work very well, certainly not in the long term - then final adjustment can be made inside the car at the lever. Only needs stripped if adjusters are seized.
davey l wrx Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Adjust at the back first then take any slack out at the handbrake!

DR Motosport Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 If its your own car and if you haven't had them off before, I'd pop off the rear discs, have a look at the shoes, adjust properly and clean up the adjusters.

If i was a bit more experienced i would give this a shot but as i am new and a novice to all this and with it being the brakes i think i will need to get an expert to look at this. Looks fairly simple and straightforward but i value my life and dont want to tinker with something i am not sure about.

scoobywho Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 Can you have a look when you help with the 350z? I value my life lol Of course it takes 5 mins with a plain screwdriver and a 10 spanner
