mctwistuk Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Can anyone advise if the standard cables on the oil pressure and temperature sensors are long enough to fit using sandwich plate if I put controller unit in drivers footwell? Cheers Chris
colin_ross Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Mine had plenty of length but I did not use a sandwich plate. I took pressure from the standard location and the temp from the plug at the number 3 cylinder. Never heard of anyone having a problem though.
mctwistuk Posted June 15, 2012 Author Posted June 15, 2012 Took advice from terzoNeil and we are going sandwich plate route due to age of car as i don't want to run risk of stripping threads when trying to remove bungs in block etc.
ciaranrb5 Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 TBH It is an alloy block the plug will come out no worries.
WUZ Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 As Ciaran says - it will be fine if you use the right tools. Best to read temp above Cyl#3 as it is the hottest point for the Oil so you can see what's happening temp wise and monitor your oils condition better.
mctwistuk Posted June 16, 2012 Author Posted June 16, 2012 Going down the sandwich plate route will the cables be long enough and what side is best to go through firewall and if possible can you show me a pic? Cheers
G.Mac Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 The cables will be long enough. I have my controller in the glove box and fed the wires through the rubber grommet on the passenger side bulkhead by snipping a hole in it Graeme

Looking forward to hopefully seeing it out and about
colin_ross Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 One other thing to consider, putting the sensors into a sandwich plate will mean running those very expensive and near impossible to replace cables past the headers. Good luck with that.

I just don't want to try fitting in the block and end up damaging threads in block and need to strip out engine to fix. Edited June 17, 2012 by mctwistuk
WUZ Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Are you running a sandwich plate Graeme? I just don't want to try fitting in the block and end up damaging threads in block and need to strip out engine to fix. I've fitted over 15 sets of defi's to Scoobs and NEVER stripped the threads on the Block when removing the blanking plug or refiting the Brass adaptor plug. WORST CASE - you'll use a cheap Allen Key and round the hex hole on the blanking plug.................. then fit the sandwich plate. TRUST ME - YOU'LL NOT HAVE AN ISSUE. In fact - if you want to wait until I get home, bring the car to Ingleston on the 1st of July (we're having a sprint event there, your welcome to watch) and I'll loosen the blanking plug and fit the adaptor with the Oil sensor in there...... FOR NOTHING!!!! Would that help/inspire you? Russell
mctwistuk Posted June 17, 2012 Author Posted June 17, 2012 That sounds like a fantastic offer but won't be in the country that day unfortunately :-(
WUZ Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Only other time I am down your way is for the TrackScotland Knockhill track evening on the 4th of July (Wednesday)? Any use? Russell

Russell It's cool Russell. Terso Neil is doing this so I know it is in safe hands. good to see that there are still people around that will help out fellow members. Chris
fmj Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Seriously, I did mine on a classic back when I didn't really know what I was doing. It was easy. I just cut down an allen key and then put a socket on the end of it and out came the plug. Your not going to strip a thread undoing something! The only time you strip threads is when you either do something up far too tight or when you cross thread it. Neither of those things will happen if you do it up hand tight and then tighten it a sensible amount. As for striping the head of the plug. If you use a decentish quality allen key you wont Its a nice chunky fitting and fill take a lot of abuse. I would far rather that then have all that stuff under the car. Not only is it not the best place to read the temp but its all pretty vulnerable under there and you are more likely to get a leak not to mention those wires.
euan_r Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Colin, the defi sensors just have econoseal connectors on sensor ends - cheap and easy to make your own, if your keeping eye out for some second hand.

True Euan but the ends aren't the issue, it's the bit connecting them that will get fried. Yes you can replace it but to what end if they just get toasted again?
euan_r Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Aahh I see, yes if sensor plugs get melted your ****ed. I didn't agree with sandwich plate idea in first place was merely replying to your post about defi wiring being very overly priced, which it is. Still got the black beastie?
euan_r Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 As for listening to Neil, you realise as grunt eloquently puts he is special.........
colin_ross Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Still got the black beastie? Yes mate, the old girl is still with me. She has her throat cut at the moment but should be back on her feet in a few weeks. Not added any more power to her in the last 3 or 4 years so I'm sure she'll be waaaaaay off the pace these days. Probably just as well given the amount of spirited driving I do now. Anyway, back on topic.
mctwistuk Posted June 20, 2012 Author Posted June 20, 2012 Gauges arrived today and got a bit of a result as it is an ati centre pod with carbon fibre insert which I didnt realise was pod being supplied. Now to get them fitted and see if everything is ok with car:-)
mctwistuk Posted June 26, 2012 Author Posted June 26, 2012 Well got these fitted today with the help of drb5 and went down the block fitting route. Also got a couple other bits fitted whilst he had the car. Car runs a lot better now.
