rallyfever Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Hi Guys Any thoughts on getting some poppin and bangin added to my already mapped by Powerstation UK Ecutek system, I have e-mailed Andy F to get his thoughts, but has anyone else done it already to a 2.5 Hawkeye? Cheers Gary
RA Dunk Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 You on about Anti-Lag or just a few odd pops and bangs on the over run?
rallyfever Posted June 10, 2011 Author Posted June 10, 2011 Hi Fella, Just pops and bangs, the rally car I owned had anti lag and to be honest I witnessed how much the turbo glowed when it was on - not too god for a long lasting turbo or engine in my mind!!! Any ideas buddy? Gary
RA Dunk Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 You can get the ECU mapped to run rich on the over run which would do it, 'but' as far as I know when it's on it's on, there's no way to turn it off so to speak, I know Andy has done a few like that.
rallyfever Posted June 10, 2011 Author Posted June 10, 2011 I will wait and see what he says, hopefully get a reply soon to find out what my options are. Not really wanting to go down the anti lag route and feck the turbo and engine so if its on all the time like you say, but does no harm I would be happy with that. Cheers Gary
marko72 Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 This is something ive thought about. Do like the pops and bangs. Ive heard you can get it mapped to do so. Can anyone explain to me how this actually works and why? Let me know if you get this done, and what Andy F has to say about it. Cheers.

Andy would program the ECU to fire in XXX ammount of fuel below a certain RPM on the over run, 'but' as I said earlier I know it used to b the case before when it was on it was on and couldnt be turned off, I don't know if this is still the case or not, I know people who have been back to him asking for it to be turned off again. It wouldent be too handy with the rozzer sitting up your chuffer and your poping and banging away with no way of turning it off.
badbaz Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 Don't know the details of how, Andy will no doubt be along to explain. It involves fuel and timing changes and it is 'always on'. It only works between about 2200 and 4500rpm and so can be driven around. It also has a mind of it's own. Some days it is very 'poppy' where it just will go constantly on the over run and other times it will only do it once as the throttle is shut and then again when the revs drop below 2200rpm. This can change from one engine start to another. I.e. start and head for fuel, bang city. Start after fuel and only one bang per lift. Never consistent. Always makes me grin though! The flames on the overrun are awesome. Especially when warm and pushing on. It doesn't have a negative effect on economy. I've had it for four years and would never consider having it deactivated. It does make the car less smooth though. And after all that I don't even know if it can be done on yours....... Andy?
rig-pig Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 and we can vouch for the pops and bangs from yours as well as the flames
x444wrx Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 Hi mate, when Trackhound was mapping my 2007 hawkeye sti ppp I got Al to also add the pops and bangs in there on my 2.5 and as Badbaz says there are days where it'll be really poppy and others where it'll only pop here and there on lift off. Pretty sure its not just something you can turn off and I know a couple of folk that have had it done and thought it was great until the novelty wore off and the realisation of having it on a daily driver sunk in. Me.... I love it all day long and when it flames it really does flame alright!! Great for annoying the neighbours lol!!!!! would never have it removed from my map.

I did get pops n bangs when I changed my backbox to the afterburner, this with the standard downpipe. Since the snakehead is on it bangs less but still pops sometimes, although Im sure not in anyway to the extent of having it mapped on! rallyfever Posted June 12, 2011 Author Posted June 12, 2011 Got the reply from Andy so should be done in July sometime - cant wait
wrx kenny Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Had the pops and bangs added to mine when it was mapped by alistair , like all the rest i wouldnt get it removed not a chance kenny
Ryan@Indigo-GT Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Pops & Bangs sound awesome! It can be set up so you can turn it on or off, usually we just hijack a pre existing button
wilky Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 Don't do it. I had it on the fatboy and it drove me fecking nuts.
Lillpete Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 Great when going for a cane a bit embarrassing when going to a funeral
marky.t.s Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 Don't do it. I had it on the fatboy and it drove me fecking nuts. Well i loved it on the fatboy,i remember being behind Andy on a wee october run a couple of years ago
BalliSTIc Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 IIRC it works by retarding ignition on throttle lift off, ie: unburnt fuel gets blown down the 'zorst which then ignites in the pipe when the spark eventually fires... feel free to correct me though. Also IIRC it can be set "from mild to wild" - when I had mine mapped by Duncan Graham (Top bloke - plug plug!), he asked if I wanted just "a few pops here and there" all the way up to "bangs and flames". Mine is easily nearer the latter but only comes in when boosted at about 4krpm and only on lift-off. It's daily driven and... yes you wouldn't let fly with the local constabulary nearby (like Barry...) but it can be trundled round town without attracting too much ADDITIONAL attention. Let's face it - if you're even CONSIDERING this, you're probably running close to a full decat system and it ain't exactly gonna sound subtle ANYWAY! *chuckle*
rallyfever Posted June 15, 2011 Author Posted June 15, 2011 Hi Wilky, To be honest I only drive it at the weekend and could do with something that could make me chuckle whilst driving, and as has already been stated the cars already pretty damn loud and turns heads - this will only make them turn a tad quicker!!! I had 2-stage anti-lag on the rally car and that was a hoot, if I don't like it, I can always get it mapped again. Gary
rallyfever Posted June 15, 2011 Author Posted June 15, 2011 Very true fella, thats why the 320d tourer would be going to that bad boy - oh the advantage of having 2 cars.
BalliSTIc Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 ... unless they're both scoobs! (not that that's a DIS-advantage)

Gary Each to their own I suppose, Andy had it pretty full on which as someone mentioned earlier was good when progressing in a safe and controlled manner, but was a nightmare around the town as it drew unwanted attention from the Feds. If It could have been turned on and off, that would have been different, maybe switching between maps, but that was not set.

Might be good if it can have - but won't stop me if it cant. Happy bangin Gary
Sleiper Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 2.5's can have it on/off with flat foot shifting and auto blip on downchanges on the new racerom ecutek that andy does, i have pops and bangs and absolutely hate it unfortunately mine is always on(blob sti), draws unwanted attention to car and is a pain in the a**e also EGT's are through the roof which in turn can't be good for turbo, headers etc, i'm getting a tweak by andy for my new turbo, injectors etc next week and will definetely be getting the bangs turned off!

It does seem a love/hate thing, but as you stated, you had it, hated it, so you're getting it removed. That's the best bit of mapping - you can do what you want, and if you don't like it - you can always put it back to what it was. What mods you getting done with Andy this time? Gary
