WRX Blob or WRX STI Bug

Hi,

Currently looking at getting either A Blobeye WRX (possibly PPP) or a Bugeye WRX STI Type UK.

The STI will cost a bit more to purchase, no big difference in insurance quotes.

But what is the general consensus on the best buy?

Is it worth paying a bit more to get the STI or does the Blobeye have a lot of improvements

over a bugeye that make up for it?

If insurance isnt a problem get the STI, better gearbox and brakes for when you end up modding it. You willwish you had if you buy the wrx and then spend money on it to get it to the sti level.

Edit: try and get a prodrive bug sti as those are the best looking ones!

The looks for one!!!

Owning a Blobeye WRX i'd say get one of them but i'd have to try the STI out. Performance wise the STI is a step up from the WRX but i can't really complain about mine, it's quick enough.

Nothing against the bug eye but for me they just remind me of the ford Scorpio and that was a hateful motor.

Can't understand how they can't have a big difference in insurance quotes?

The Blobeye WRX has 225 BHP

The Bug STI has about 280 BHP and the PPP uprated the suspension and engine map to give even more power!

At the end of the day it's what you feel is the better car. The STI will be quicker, corner better and worse on MPG.

Not that the WRX is a bad car.

go for the sti, mechanically theres nothing in it between a bugeye or blobeye sti, its all down to looks

although i should probably ask what youve got just now and what youl be using the car for?

my thinking for getting an sti was that the money saved buying a wrx would soon be gobbled up by bigger spoiler, better brakes, more power which you get standard with the sti plus nicer interior,6 speed gearbox, better handling.

although having said that the wrx is still a very good car and a bit softer, easier to live with every day - either one youl love them to bits as long as you pick a good one!

Insurance was surprising I have to say, cheapest quote was £340 for the STI and £310 for the WRX.

I'm an old git <_<

Currently have a Corolla T Sport but only bought it as a stop gap to the Scooby.

I no longer require a car for my work as I've started a new job within walking distance from home.

So it's really just getting my 'dream' car for a few years before I get too old lol.

Also have a family and we'll use it for holidays, so needs to have a decent boot which is where the

Corolla falls down. I also think the standard WRX is a bit plain interior, but the STI is a bit better

with the Blue Suede seats etc. Really want the STI but just need to be convinced.

Get the sti !!!

I had a wrx bugeye and spent money on it just getting it up to sti spec!

If insurance and the fact you wont be doing loads of miles its a no brainer!

test drive the two, youl be convinced ;) for what your describing id definitely go for the sti, theres no shortage of folks whove moved from a wrx or turbo to an sti but very few go the other way.

if your going to do it you may as well go full fat :D

also if you shop around youd be surprised at what youl pick up a 2003 blobeye sti for - there was a guy on here the other week asking about prices for selling his 70k miles 04 sti and general reply was about 6k

Yeah the WRX STI I am looking at is a 52 reg White Bugeye and described as Prodrive model.

You will be hard pushed to find a white bug let alone a sti prodrive model. Go and check it out.

Let us all know how you get on.

Go for the STi m8, make sure you check out the link above from Paul, check the spec of the Prodrive and make sure thats what the car is!

Good luck.

Thanks for the info guys, you've convinced me the STI is the one to go for.

This is the one I really like, so nobody else even think about buying it lol:-

Not sure if anyone on here knows this car?

Thats not a Prodrive - wrong sideskirts.

I agree with most here, get a STI - you will probably regret a WRX the first time a STi shows you up.

If you can, get a PPP - 305bhp.

Then it will be a slippery slope to Andy Forrest.

Good luck!

looks a nice clean one, dont recognise it but try asking Blair (supremeweb) or Dale (thefastone) as their aberdeen RO's past and present

Thanks I've tried PM both these guys

Cunning tactics by the seller there, not putting a photo of the front!

6months makes all the difference...

'03 Blobeye - Best of Both

Yeah I do have front shots now after asking the seller to send some through and it looks OK actually.

So probably not an official Prodrive version then, may just have some prodrive parts fitted aftermarket?

I still need to get the funds together so nothing imminent until that happens anyway.

There are different versions of the Bugeye carrying the name Prodrive.

First is the Prodrive Style (as stated on the V5)

Nicer Front Bumper, Blobeye STi style sideskirts, Blue Dials etc

My old one....(note the sideskirts/front bumper/dials - the front lights are not standard on any Bugeye btw)

Then there is Prodrive Performance Package (PPP)

Upgraded ECU

Sports Cat

High Capacity Fuel Pump

There should be a certificate from Prodrive stating fitment also - but nothing noted on the V5.

Personally I would rather have a Prodrive Style STi over normal STi any day of the week purely for looks, but the decision is yours.
