GazTurboUK Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Looking at getting another classic Impreza, previously had a uk turbo 2000 but recently been looking at WRXs but difference in insurance is around 30%, is it really worth the extra to have a wrx? Anyone owned both and how did you think they compared? Cheers Gaz
paul555sti Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 (edited) You get more for your money with a wrx! Try moley on scoobynet SIDC for insurance! Edited January 23, 2011 by Andy No need to go elsewehere ;-)
colin_ross Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 What we talking about here, wrx or wrx sti?
GazTurboUK Posted January 23, 2011 Author Posted January 23, 2011 Talking about a WRX mate, STI's are over double what im being quoted for a UK Turbo to insure and beyond my current budget
johnnyr6 Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 (edited) Have you tried some of the specialists for a quote? I use a plan and found them good. They were £300 less than elephant. If you can stretch to a STI its worth it. You can get a nice one from around £2500. Although i rekon mine is worth about £500...lol Johnny Edited January 23, 2011 by JohnnyR6

GazTurboUK Posted January 23, 2011 Author Posted January 23, 2011 Still to try the specialists but from the companies i have tried so far its not looking too good. Basically trying to find out if there is a big difference between a uk turbo and wrx and if its worth paying the extra for.
scooby222 Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 what age of cars are you talking about? last uk turbo's were 220hp first wrx's were 240 last ones about 265, wrx's usually have aircon, bucket seats, nardi steering wheels and all round better specs if your talking a difference of 2-300 insurance then wrx is worth it, no doubt
mystery machine Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Excuse my ignorance about classic Imprezas, but was the original WRX a JDM-only model? If that's the case it might be worth asking the ins. why the WRX's premium is higher? Perhaps you can close the gap by fitting some additional security? Just a thought.
neill54 Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 My impreza is a group 20 something I'm sure the uk turbo is a group 17 and I think the wrx was a jdm only model! Neil
paul555sti Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Mystery machine! Any classic imreza called a wrx or sti were jdm models. The wrx never started over here until the bugeye.
paul555sti Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 The insurance is higher because the jdm cars had a more power as standard than the uk cars!
boab type ra Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 i should have the girlfriends scooby on the road this week so when its runing i will give you ago in it and you can see for yourself.
mystery machine Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Mystery machine! Any classic imreza called a wrx or sti were jdm models. The wrx never started over here until the bugeye. Aye, I thought that. The insurance is higher because the jdm cars had a more power as standard than the uk cars! OK, didn't realise - that's me learnt summat new today
euan_r Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 very little between a wrx and uk turbo. i would go with uk model and you could put the difference each year towards a wee treat for it. wrx is only group 20 (old system, theres now 50 groups i believe) as it was an import not due to marginal power difference. only snag being a uk will have suffered uk weather longer and finding a tidy one is becoming very rare. if it had been choice of uk vs sti it would go the other way as you do get a better spec.

It's also because the WRX was a Grey Import and not a Parallel import... That has the knock on effect that should it need parts for a repair, they are generally considered by insurance companies to be harder/more expensive to get* and therefore your premium is more expensive. * Note: whether that is actually the truth doesn't matter, I believe it's a general rule of thumb on their part.
GazTurboUK Posted January 24, 2011 Author Posted January 24, 2011 My last uk turbo was running 255bhp which is similar to a standard(ish) wrx depending on year thats why im debating if its worth the extra expense insurance wise to have a wrx over a uk again
