Vimmy Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 Hi Guys, advice needed, I need to swap out the oil when I replace my oil temp sender so I went and bought some Mobil1 Synthetic 0w40 today from halfrauds, now on reading the forums (which I perhaps should have done before) it seems this is too thin an oil to use. Do I take it back and get a different oil, their choice wasnt too great, and should I use semi or fully synthetic stuff instead. I currently have magnatec 10w40, but Halfrauds didn't sell it? Cheers, Col.
notsosmall Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 Id take it back Get a 5 - 40 at least and some say that is too thin and fully synthetic
mark1234 Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 0 is to thin dealers were given a bullitin about it when it came out
stum450n Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 IIRC, Halfords do a 10/50 fully synthetic that's well recommended. Iain would know, he uses it I think.

Vimmy Posted May 8, 2010 Author Posted May 8, 2010 As always, great help chaps i'll grab some 5w50 tomorrow. Cheers Col
Vimmy Posted May 8, 2010 Author Posted May 8, 2010 Stu/Iain, when you say Halfords do a 5W50, is that their own brand named oil or another manufacturer ie Castrol/Mobil etc as I've always been a bit wary of using own branded fluids?
andyjudge Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 I'm running on Halfords 5w40 or maybe 50 Fully Synth this time around without issue Normally use Opie & use Silkolene Pro S but Halfords had its own brand on offer at the time. Agree on the Mobil 1 0w stuff being too thin, mine leaks a bit from the main oil seal if I use it
Vimmy Posted May 8, 2010 Author Posted May 8, 2010 Ah cool, thats very good news, I wouldn't want to induce any leaks with the car, the longer its leak free the happier I'll be, Halfords it is then Cheers Muchly Col

Vimmy Posted May 9, 2010 Author Posted May 9, 2010 Thanks for the info Iain, I couldn't get 5w50 so settled for 5w40 fully synth instead. I measured what came out of the sump and got around 3.8 litres, with the oil filter still attached, of thick gloopy goo. I replaced with the same ammount of the nice clean stuff and getting a good reading on the old dipstick just over the F mark. This is with the car on a slight down slope so on a level road should be ok, hopefully If anyone's after a set of screwdrivers, Halfords have a set of 8 decent screwdrivers, retailing for £19.99, for free if you buy some of their own brand oil. Happy days Cheers, Col.
