Wheely Weird Question

With so many aftermarket wheels fitted, can anyone answer why an OZ wheel would have a sticker on it that says 'for competition use only, not for street use'?

No smart a$$ answers required thanks!

Surely a wheel is a wheel is a wheel in the sense it's wheel?

I know some are stronger and lighter but not sure why that would lead to competition use only. Why do brake pads say track use only but end up on Scoobs ??

It's strange for sure - big difference is track brakes may not operate until up to temp - a wheel on the other hand: it's not square until it sees a 'motorsport is dangerous' sign is it? :)

oz replica wheels have competition use only stamped on them so that they dont get sued for counterfeit goods.

same with oe look ones like merc bmw and audi

Don't a lot of Aftermarket bits say for "competiton or show use only" or similar? Gets round the company offering them being sued senseless when you're pulled by the police for having an illegally specced car.

Does anyone know the weight of a standard 2005 STi alloy?

Is this for more weight saving on the car ?? Surely not, next we'll be hearing you say "I haven't eaten for 2 days before driving it" !! :) .

Do some wheels not have the weight stamped on them, not sure which wheel I saw that on recently...or did I dream it ????

no idea why they would say that, but would you need to watch out on the insurance side of things.would you be covered if they found out we all know what insurance companies are like.

not sure but my rays are 8.5x18 and weigh 7.6kgs i think and are a lot lighter than the standard 17's

These weigh 11.3kgs, quite heavy but not maybe much heavier than standard ones. The key is strength for me, I've always stayed clear of aftermarket alloys because of the strength versus cost always making them too expensive. These are motorsport alloys, specifically for GpN rally car, so strength shouldn't be an issue?

LOL! The weight saving is not number 1 on the list Colin, it's probably number 3ish. First for me is the rally car look. First and foremost the STi was a rally car and with the graphics, colour, noise and the rest, all mods are only allowed if they keep to that philosophy! Sad but true.

Haven't eaten? Has it escaped your attention that it's easter? I'm about to get my race suit 'let out' a bit!!!

Your dreams are probably best not discussed on an open forum mate! ;)

Car has been subject to a detailed independent engineer's report to get insurance in the first place. It's a condition of my policy that this was done. It's unusual but considering the sole use of my car now, it's advisable to make sure they not going to step out and leave me.

It should be noted that 'not for street use' is on a sticker and not, as far as I've seen, stamped on!!

Peel off the stickers then. Problem solved :D

If only I'd thought of that one ;):P

Seriously though, in top level motorsport these wheels would no doubt have a limited shelf life, they wouldn't get the same abuse on the road (though it might be a close run thing :) ) but how will they do over time, what about the durability of the paint/coating - are magnesium wheels not prone to corrosion more than conventional alloys?

ha, been there and had the tshirt- used to have tsw wheels on a 306,looked like a 50p within 2 weeks....

but the rays are fine, mine are from their motorsport range and the OZ superleggera's i had on my classic were the same, very light and very strong -til i hit a brick straight on at full chat in 2nd..... :);)

The consensus is they'll be ok. For all those running 18" wheels, the ones I'm after are 8" wide - what size tyres are being run on this combo?
