mick67 Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 ok lads hears the deal. engine decided to go on us last sunday and was wondering what to do next? just need some advice on forged and stroker kits. are they worth it? or would it be better just to put a 2.5lt later STI engine in the classic instead. ohh also is there anyone that lives near me that could come out and look at my baby before i get the trailer and take it to the garage
john_mchutchison Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 im not an expert mate but maybe some more info may be required here. Apologies if wrong.
mick67 Posted April 4, 2010 Author Posted April 4, 2010 the car still fires up. but it sounds like a midget has got inside the engine and is banging a hammer about in there.
terzo neil Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 a midget with a very big hammer if you go for a lateral 2.1 stroker kit and new oil modine as this eseentail as all the metal swark from the big/main ends will collect in there and destroy the new build if used again, have looked at this for a new build for my terzo, time i added all the bits includung arp head studs and new oil pump/modine i was over the 2500 quid with no labour costs depends on how much the car is worth, maybe a late bottom end from a newage with your heads could be a better bet, could be cheaper as well
RS Grant Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 Depends on how long you are planning to keep the car and what sort of power level you want to run. Cheers, Grant
colin_ross Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 ^^^^What he said. If it's a keeper dig deep and buy nothing but the best. If you're palning on selling in the next year or two rebuild to standard and keep the power sensible.
mick67 Posted April 4, 2010 Author Posted April 4, 2010 the car was up for sale a while ago, but want to keep her now. met to many friends in the subaru scene to walk away. willing to spend between 3 to 4k on the engine. time is on my side really would be happy with 350bhp i know japperformanceparts are doing 2.5lt STI engines for £1700? sounds a bit cheap tho.
hi_jac Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 First stop would be SW for engine builds. Steve can advise, whether it be a rebuild or a balls out race engine

I just sold a Spec D long engine for £1500 so £1700 is not far off. Give mark at lateral a bell and enquire about one of his 2.1Lt stroker kits. http://lateralperformance.co.uk/product.ph..._offer_________ http://lateralperformance.co.uk/section.ph...t_short_engines Edited April 5, 2010 by Arch

hi_jac Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Can't thank SW Motorsport enough for my built engine
fai17 Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Depends on your budget and power you are after. That all has an effect on what you need to buy and who to use. You said 350 bhp.....a good 2nd newage sti engine will get you this with a suitable turbo for not alot of cash! After 400 you will be needing a forge engine for reliablity and longivity.
dan_jess Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 It would be interesting to know what a mapper/engine builder thinks is a good package for a fast road car. I cant decide what to do with my P1 but dont fancy horsepower chasing (much ) What do other people who have been there done that think? I bet there are a few people over the years, who sometimes wish they hadnt went so far with their cars.

That would be me - but only on certain days. Other times I think I haven't went far enough. I don't think I've ruined it yet but wouldn't rule it out for the future.

Haven't regret to what i've done in the mod front, certainly interesting pushing the bounderies for a road car! You sometimes have very feelings and whether using all the spare money is worth it! But hey you only live once so you if you can do it and want to do it then why not What do you think Colin?
RS Grant Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 I think you boys are off your rockers, but I'm glad guys like you push the boundaries... because normal joes that sh!t an engine and require uprated parts can then buy the bits knowing that running them at 60-70% of what has been proven to work is the way to having a safe car. Cheers, Grant

I probably felt like that a couple of years ago Peter but my personal circumstance have changed (by choice) and now the car takes much more of a back seat than it did before time and money wise. I don't regret what I've done with it as such but don't know if I'd do the same again given the choice. I have a long term plan for the car but nothing is certain.
