ashleywrx Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Hi I have an 02 wrx with no current mods and I am considering a decat exhaust and a panel filter and then maybe a remap. What make of panel filter are you guys using and any recommendations?

Pipercross do a good one (oil free, very simillar to the Sti one) , some Subaru garages stock them too Cheers Iain
scoobysailor Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 I've used both green and K&N with no issues (although some people say the oil from them sometimes eats the Maf sensor).

geosub Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Got k&n on my 02 wrx with no issues as yet Cheers Geo
Big 'D' Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Got k&n on my 02 wrx with no issues as yet Cheers Geo Thats fine, I am only going by the stats that I have collected over the past 2 years from the Tech section of this very forum, granted most of the issues have been on the Classic scoobs especially the MY99/00 (choclate MAF) but there were plenty of failures on the older classics too and the one thing which 99% of them had in common was the oil based air filter or induction kit. Cheers Iain
lewisscoob Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 (edited) Classic scoobs especially the MY99/00 (choclate MAF) Thats some damn expensive chocolate Iain! I have a '99 T2000 and have the K+N panel filter with no problems to report. AFAIK, the cone type induction kits are mighty bad for the MAF unless mapped to suit. Hi Mate Some MY99/00 cars go through MAF sensors atleast once a year even without an induction kit, you are lucky mate, how long have you had the K+N fitted and do you clean the MAF regularly? ( just interested thats all ) There are other aspects of fitting an induction kit which can harm the MAF ie poor filtration, the airflow over the MAF and vibration, all I was stating was that when I have asked any owner on a faulty MAF thread what if any induction kit they have been running 99% stated they were running an oil based filter. Cheers Iain
colin_ross Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 AFAIK, the cone type induction kits are mighty bad for the MAF unless mapped to suit. What? Mapping has nothing to do with maf failure. As Iain has said contamination and vibration are what kills a maf. The 99/00 ones are particulary fragile, I did one in in less than 800 miles. STI panel filter would be my recommendation. Why take the chance with anything else for zero power gains.

Cheers Iain Ive had my current car for 10 months, it had a blitz sus cone when I got it. It was throwing code 23 but after removing the cone in favour of the std box with K+N Panel as per Mr F's recommendation, cleaning the sensor then reset ECU, its been fine ever since.
