Hi everyone

im looking for some help in deciding what subaru to buy. im stuck between the 07 wrx GB270, the 05-07 saloon wrx sti, and if i can stretch my budget(doubtfull ;) ) the 07 RB320.

looking for any help in decision as i cant see a lot between the GB270 and the STI, as this will be my first subaru as well was wondering if anyone could also give information on the running cost i.e brake pads, service costs.

cheers for any post

STI has different suspension, brakes, seats, body parts, gearbox, mapping, exhaust, etc and are all generally upgrades from the WRX. Both are excellent cars and, speaking as someone who had an 03 WRX for 3 years, great cars. Fuel economy and general "live-ability" is better with a WRX but you'll end up upgrading some bits and bobs (everyone does) and some of them may be STI type things.

The RB320 is the best of the lot and would be well worth the stretch (and hold it's value best) BUT the STI or GB270 probably offers the best value for money at present.

Not sure if you have as it doesnt say but you should drive both cars and see how they feel. Lots of people who buy wrx's end up spending lots on them to get them up to sti spec. ( me included on my last one )

I've owned both the STI & GB270 both are excellent cars, as Paul said I would test drive both, the STI would probably be the better buy as it has stronger parts the GB is a limited edition so it might hold it's value a bit better, even if you buy an STI you'll end up modding it anyway so it's gonna cost ;)

Just bite the bullit & get the RB lol

not had a test drive yet but i am planning on it, dont know if a would go daft with the mods though probably just the usual stuff, re-map, intake, exhaust that kind of thing would be tempted not to touch the RB or GB though. ;)

:) Where have I heard that before, many £££££££ssssss later and the warranty was void on my GB when it was six months old ;)

gb270 is a lovely car but when i bought my sti i looked at getting a wrx and adding a few prodrive options to improve the weak areas and suddenly i wasnt far off the price of an sti and still didnt have the 6 speed heavy duty gearbox, wider track, thicker driveshafts, dccd and active diffs, nicer interior etc

if you can stretch to it an rb320 is an awesome machine, i have heard a few horror stories regarding the 2.5 engines and oil consumption/starvation so a warranty could be worth it or stick to a 2.0l sti ;)

the running costs between a wrx and sti arent that different as long as you shop around for prices- sti brembo brake pads are about 200 from a dealer, can be found for about 70 oe spec,90 uprated mintex, servicing is every 10k miles or year on sti's -oil and filter change from a specialist keeping the warranty intact is about 140, fuel consumption is not something to think about with any of them lol

on any of the above do watch out for knocking rear shocks which is the one common fault with them

but whichever you go for you wont regret it :)

Hawkeye (MY06) STI for sure... Contrary to what's been said I've not heard any horror stories about the 2.5 engine. Certainly NO more than any other engine. It would be a mistake not to at least drive one and see the difference over the UK 2.0 because the difference is huge! I think the 2.5 is MUCH better.

If you are planning on any mods then don't bother with the RB320, because you'll pay premium prices because it's the RB, then end of taking off the Prodrive parts that you paid for, and replacing them with others - all the while de-valueing your RB! The RB is just an STI with Prodrive parts added on (all of which you could source and have fitted yourself).

Cheers,

Mark

Had my RB320 since new and LOVE it! Never had any issues with oil consumption etc and have kept mods to a minimum (strut brace, stickers etc). It does between 25 and 11mpg depending how you drive it :) . I have had the rear shockers replaced under warranty but that's about it. Only thing i would like is a SLIGHTLY louder exhaust ;)

;) I couldnt hear it running at the santa cruise run!

On topic, it has been said, drive both and if you are sure and certain at the bottom of your heart that you wont be modifying to reach or exceed the spec of the STI, go for the GB270. Me personally, I would go for the STi.

Aye, just nae sure what to fit and don't want to **** with decat's for MOT hassles, probably just try a new rear box? Any advice of which one?

Hayward & Scott like this one.

I have one on my STI and would highly recommend it. Also a nice subtle look so wouldn't mess with the current look of your RB. Sounds amazing though.

(edited to say): I also have H&S centre section. Before I got the new DP though I had original DP - H&S cat pipe - H&S centre - H&S BB. With a centre and backbox I'm sure your car would sound much better.

Cheers,

Mark

Just change the backbox hoss, no need to worry about remaps or mot. i had a ninja 2 on mine before i sold it, I still have the back box in my garage............. ;)

*edit* if you are going to mod the car to any degree i wouldn't bother with the GB or RB, just get a 07 Sti and the money you would save buying the standard STi would more than cover the extra bolt on bits.

Plus you would end up with a better car!

Hi,

Just thought I'd add - Welcome to the forum ;)

Whereabouts are you? We have Gav aka Scoobyseller on here who works at Grieves in Falkirk.

Even thought you don't have the car yet, you could pop along to your local meet to say hi and

see some cars.
