My06 Brakes

Hi All,

I have done a quick search on here and not really found what I need, apologies if its there and someone points me straight to it.

I had my car serviced last week and was informed that the front brakes were getting close to limits, and would nessisitate the disks and possibly pads to be changed, which they were more than happy to quote me for, I was glad I was sat down!

What I would like to know is, are they easy enough to change myself, I am an aircraft engineer in my day job so I have all the tools from when I was working on the tools (now office based), and have been able to change brakes on most of my old cars when they needed it. Is there an online guide that shows all the steps to take to do the change or would a Haynes manual suffice? Or, is it a job thats best to have done by someone else and pay them to do the dirty work?

In addition, are there any recomendations for any discs/pads to go for or a supplier to use? I am wanting to stay as standard a s possible, but if I am able to improve using the standard calipers and disc size then I am open to ideas.

Any advice would be appreciated and thanks in advance to anyone offering any advice.

Discs and pads are fairly easy to do. Two bolts hold the caliper to the backplate, the disc just pulls of the hub. Rear discs will need you to adjust the handbrake to slide the disc off. As long as your confident you can do it then give it a go.

Some owners manuals that might help.

As for where to buy I always use Godspeed but others use AS Performance http://www.asperformance.com/.

Is it a WRX or STi? Front discs on an 06? Already? Have you been to the moon and back or do you park it with your front wheels in the sea?

Seriously, if it was at the dealers they are a tad pessimistic about what needs doing. First thing I'd do is get the front wheels off and see exactly how worn they are. I'd suspect there is more than enough left for many miles yet!

Its a WRX, sorry should have said.

The outside pad is at about 1mm, not had the wheel off yet to see for myself to see what the inside surface of the disc is like, but there is a slight grinding noise when I brake, only really noticeable when at a slow speed, and certainly not as bad as when the brakes were totally worn on a previous car. I just dont want to get to that stage. I am more dubious about the disc needing replacing, but the pads are in need.

Check the disc then and decide from there. If pads only 1mm then chances are the rusty lips of the disc will be touching by now!

Well, I have just had the wheels off and am happy to say that the discs are not a problem at all, just the usual really. The pads are ok, and will probably last another few thousand miles, so time can be taken in choosing what to fit.

Thanks all for the replies till now.

Hi Ian,

Nice car btw and it was good to meet you at the r/r day last weekend, enjoy your new toy

As mentioned earlier in the thread , contact Alyn at AS performance. He's a top bloke and will talk you through different makes, set ups depending on your driving style, needs etc.. I've phoned him a few times and if he's got the time he'll put you on the right track. The last time i called he was rather busy but he even went out his way to call me back when the time suited. Fantastic service !

Why? Do subaru discs and pads tend to last well? Clearly, driving and mileage will vary, but my 2006 STi has just turned 20k miles and my thoughts are turning to brakes...!!!

As Barry said, get a second opinion re. disk replacement. Dealers (apparently) will tell you they will need replaced with there is mucho life left in them. Changing the front disks and pads is a skoosh. I'm a complete tit with cars and I managed it at the first attempt, so you should manage it blindfolded.

Why? Not knowing if it was an STi or not to start with. STi discs are massive and very durable, they'd take a helluva abuse to make them need changing so soon. As it turns out it's a WRX and as the OP says they are fine, as suspected.

What's an OP???

I change pads at 18-20k and moved to Ferrodo DS2500. Just changed to Godspeed discs and a new set of ferrodo pads but I'm now on 40k.

But as you say is a lot to do with how you drive it.
