adamh Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Hi all, I Decatted my car the other day and i'm wondering is it normal for them to idle at 1500 rpm when you first start them ? (only does it for a minute or until i blip the throttle ) It's only started doing it after i fitted the decat. Also is there any upgraded top mount intercoolers for a v1 uk wagon ( the slanty type ) I tried a search but could only see them for the newer classics. P.s I'm new to subaru ownership Cheers

sti pretender Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Hi and welcome to the forum. Sound like the decat has caused the change, with the exhaust flowing more freely the pressures have changed, well thats what I was told when I decatted my classic. Are you planning on getting it map? If you want more power and better delivery a map with even miner mods make a big difference. Robert
adamh Posted November 17, 2009 Author Posted November 17, 2009 Hmmm i'll have to investigate fitting a new age top mount. Yeah i will be getting it mapped at some point i want to get the basic stuff fitted first i.e better intercooler, induction kit etc ..................... Brakes are a definite priority the now It's got a polar performance chip fitted which hopefully should keep me entertained until i get a proper remap. Thanks

Thanks Think its easier to fit a front mount rather than a new age top mount, both are about the same price as well, as for brakes i take it you have the OE two pots up front? deffo worth changing them out lol
Joe G Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Stick with the original air box with a k&n panel filter unless you need to change it out for an induction kit (ie fitting a front mount)

I'm no to fussed if i need to remove the AC as thats getting junked anyways
adamh Posted November 17, 2009 Author Posted November 17, 2009 Stick with the original air box with a k&n panel filter unless you need to change it out for an induction kit (ie fitting a front mount) It's running a drilled airbox (i.e buchered with a grinder ) and an HKS panel filter just now Cheers

Joe G Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 It's running a drilled airbox (i.e buchered with a grinder ) and an HKS panel filter just now Cheers Will be letting hot air into the intake if its been butchered and drilled. A drilled box will only make more noise and you will prob be losing power if anything.

I tried to minimise heatsoak by only cutting the part that faces the front of the car the rest is still sealed .................................... it does sound good tho
Big 'D' Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Going back to your first question 1500rpm idle from cold is perfectly normal so long as the idle gradually comes down as the temp increases and then idles roughly about 850rpm when up to temp. Cheers Iain
RA Dunk Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Cant say ive ever seen any of mine ideling as high as that on a cold start Ian
Big 'D' Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Cant say ive ever seen any of mine ideling as high as that on a cold start Ian All 3 of my scoobs have always started with a cold idle speed of 1500rpm so I assumed it to be normal. Cheers Iain

Big 'D' Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Obviously all our scoobs are going to be modded and setup different but just to see if I was going mad I went out this morning and took pics of the dash in both my 01 Fozzy and my 97 Sti, they are both full decat etc yet they both have roughly the same idle speed. Pics were taken within 15 secs of turning the key. V3 WRX Sti MY01 Fozzy S-Turbo Cheers Iain
Connor_scotland Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I decatted my car last Saturday and when i start it for first time it sits at 1500rpm aswell mate.
thefastone Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Its just what used to be the "choke" it just revs a little higher to warm the engine up, like an auto-choke if you like. most if not all fuel injected cars and motorbikes should do it really... you probably just haven't noticed... In fact my bike used to rev a good bit higher for the first few minutes when you started it up...
colin_ross Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Going back to the idle question - it will be the cold start function that has raised the revs not the decat, although you may hear it more. The cars run a maf as standard so even if the car is now breathing more freely it will make sure the desired airflow is maintained by adjusting the idle control valve. Once up to temp it will back it off as normal.
