badbaz
Fantastic effort from you Robert and every other contributor, a great amount been/will be raised! Friday will be a good laugh. I was wondering what happens at the Hospital, who decides who gets what, there can't be something for every child surely? Link to comment
micra_wrc
... I was wondering what happens at the Hospital, who decides who gets what, there can't be something for every child surely? we deliver the presents to the nursing staff and they decide how to divvy it up. It normally depends on which wards have patients in over the holidays and also profile of patients (boy/girl and age group) for that particular ward. Link to comment
badbaz
So, do the kids see you deliver the parcels or is it an undercover operation? The reason I ask is because I'm a big softy and seeing ill kids just breaks my heart, as it probably does everyone else too! Just looking for a heads up Imy so I know what to expect! Link to comment
micra_wrc
no the kids in the wards don't see us deliver the presents. we have 2 Santas on the day - one to pose for photos at the entrance to the hospital with the presents and the cars - one to go up to the ward and hand out presents to the kids. The ward staff know we're coming and will have a list of kids in their care - that way we can pick out the presents to suit the patient profile. We usually get asked by the staff if you want to go up with Santa, but its heart wrenching stuff as some of the kids are very ill and obviously those of us that have a cold/sniffles are discouraged to go. The majority of us head to the canteen to wait and regroup. I've heard that the kids faces light up when Santa walks in with a bag of presents and the parents are v. appreciative for what we've done, but I've chosen not to go to the wards. Like you I'm a big softy and can't bear seeing it. there have been kids that happen to be coming into/leaving hospital when we're there and usually get a present and a photo with Santa. have a look at last year's thread for pics and stories and wow! £2,000 raised in donations already good stuff everyone Link to comment
badbaz
Thanks Imy, canteen for me! I saw last years thread, couldn't make it at the time. It's a great cause. Link to comment
sti pretender
We usually have one volunteer to accompany Santa round the ward. It can be hard seeing the children but it is ultimately rewarding. Link to comment
sti pretender
Thanks to Toysrus for not offering us a discount or goodwill gesture. The attitude of 'we have customers who spend more than that and they don't get a discount' was really helpful. Felt like telling they guy he could shove it and we'll take our money elsewhere. Think I'll put him on the naughty list. Link to comment

micra_wrc
nah Toys R Us are notoriously bad for being stingy and don't give a crap about charity. I got the "you need to contact head office 3 months ago" line when I tried 2 years ago. Link to comment
sti pretender
Thanks to everyone for helping last night. Sorry to Laura out checkout assistant who almost fainted when we rang through £1300. For Asda for cheapest deals on consoles and then getting a multibuy discount. Next year I think we'll talk to Hamley's, ELC and a few other shops to see what deals we can get and a wee email to Toysrus for having no Christmas spirit. Link to comment
