Knockhill Track Night Advice Needed

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Well I've finally got my finger out and get the RB booked onto a KH track night on Thursday, 14th May

Now I've been round KH a few times before, but the last time was 2 years ago with my old MG ZR - and that was in a monsoon

Any tips or advice before I go out? Like tyre pressures, the best diff setting to use ect... oh and how much fuel am I likely to use? Last time I just had enough left to limp home on fumes haha

1. Warm your tyres before any realy agressive driving

2. Don't crash

3. Make sure you have at least 1/2 a tank at all times or you will get fuel surge.

Try and get the 20L jerry cans. Watch out for the a***holes on track but there shouldnt be too many if you are taking your RB on the hot marques night but you never know!

The last track day was my fifth......the main advice I would give you is to enjoy it....

there are far to many people who take it to seriously........yes be serious and drive to your ability....

the other thing is not to be pushed from behind into driving quicker and beyond you and the car's capabilities...

be aware of the potential speeds both on the straight and cornering of the other cars on track.....

but like I said most of all have fun......everyone keeps asking so "how fast did you go down the straight"....

"I dont remember I was still laughing to much at how I went round the hairpin......".....so I would say enjoy it mate......

Stick to factory PSI for your tyres. Dont overfill, as the air will become dense as the heat builds up obviously.

Ask a mate to take his car as well, even if not used for track. Best place to store fuel cans etc, as you dont want to leave them laying around for obvious reasons, and you dont want to take them in the car for obvious reasons also.

Just like Paul said, enjoy it. Ive been a few times now, twice with the Impreza when I had it and all I did was focus on building on my ability. Bettering myself as I went round, and taking enough notice of others to avoid a crash but not enough notice to let them become a factor of the speed I am doing.

ENJOY!

Thanks for the advice guys, some top tips there

It's a private night limited to 15 cars, and most of them are in TVR's or Mustangs... so I should be numpty free hopefully

I'll get my support crew ready with the Landrover then. Anyone know the best place to buy cheap jerry cans?

Oh and if anyone wants to come watch feel free. It would be good to have some pics of it on track as it's unlikely to be doing it again

Hi Ross,

A couple of tips from experience

1 - Check your oil before having left the car all night - make sure and check it after the trackday - it will be a great indicator as to how much she is using when being pushed and is a good early indicator to any unseen problems.

2 - Sorry Stewartyboy disagree on the tyre front - Buy a tyre monitor and inflator, if you run standard factory PSI's you will find the understeer to be a nightmare on the RB especially when the tyres increase in temperature, you will also trash the edges as they will be over inflated especially the left tyre on KH. Check the tyre temps after 6-8 hot laps and you will see exactly what i mean. Drop them and allow them to come up to temperature with some warm up laps. You will be able to feel the left edge taking a hammering when it is over inflated especially into Duffas dip.

3 - You must do 2 out laps to let everything warm up and at least 2 cool down laps after giving it some - pull out the way and allow quicker cars to pass try and keep the speed up to allow the brakes to cool and use them as little as possible before coming into the pits, leave the car running and if you have defi's fitted let the oil temp get back down below 100

4 - Buy a rubber tyre wedge so that you do not have to put your handbrake on just get a mate to shove it under the wheel so you can leave the car idyling away without the brakes on.

5 - You WILL find the limit of the Brembos if you do enough laps be very aware of pedal fade and if it gets too much call it a day, you have probably cooked the fluid.

Lastly if you can afford it and they are not on back order get a set of Toyo R888's nice and sticky and make a big difference

Regards

cheers for all that Scotty

what do you recon is the best tyre pressure to start off on then? I'm sure I set my Parada's at about 28psi last time out... but that was with 1/3 the power

I've got a Scangauge that I can bolt on for the night.... so that will be on hand to keep an eye on the temps

From memory start at 24 cold and they should warm up nicely, that was on my Toyo's though...........

I have seen the temps when left standard as high as 48 how they never went pop i will never know.

Edited to say - don't forget and put back to normal before heading home - yip got the t-shirt......... :crying:

Would love to mate was up there yesterday at the Hot Marques, watching only as wee man had a cup game in the morning and it was a 10:00 start

I am doing the Monday to friday office stint just now mate which is a killer, Thursday night would be no good for me...........

Would have been cracking getting the 2 cars on at the same time for a wee play, especially the AP's versus the Brembos and Toyos versus standard tyres just to show you the difference.

Hopefully another time mate, you can't be serious about only taking her on once surely????

That is a shame dude. Well I'm telling the other half just the once to see what it's like.... but you never know

She's still not the slightest bit impressed that I want to risk it on the track... but it can't be any worse than the night I told her how much the RB cost :crying:

I got away with it last time because I sold the ZR 2 weeks after it was on haha

Nothing much to add that hasn't been said, apart from leave the Diff on AUTO.. unless you have plenty space and fancy some drifting - but I doubt that's the case on this occasion.

And to reiterate what has been said, don't let your fuel go below half a tank or you will get surge coming out of the hairpin!

Oh and if your brakes are starting to fade then better get on the anchors AT the Clydesdale bank bridge, if not before! Or you'll overcook in into the first corner, and that can be less than amusing!!

Oh and have a good one!!

What's the score with the private night for 15 cars? I've been seeing a few of these happening midweek. How are these being organised?

Cheers,

Mark :crying:

It's being run through a friend who has a couple of race cars that do alot of testing up there, so they get to have a few track nights just for them.

There's one more or less every month I think

Its all invite only so it keeps the riff raff out :crying:

is it a dreadnought night mate?im sure they have one on the 14th?

if so they are cracking nights, was at the last one, mainly race prep cars, minis, xr2's, leon touring car, lister cup car etc.lol

i was one of only a handful of road cars.lol

really good standard of driving as you would expect with little or no red flags.

defo agree with the fuel surge problem mentioned above, came out the hairpin with well over a quarter tank left, and it started hiccuping up the straight.lol.

unsure of tyre pressures, i just have standard 17" sti wheels with proxes and have been told to over inflate front left to 37psi and the rest 35?

if car survives this fridays ill be going on the 14th.

hahaha

Not fancy coming matey? Still some spaces I think

Only 15 cars? Much is that costing you for the session, if yae dinna mind me asking :crying: How long does the session run for?

Yeah that's the one, Paul is a good mate. I've been to a couple in the past but as I said not actually been on the track driving for over 2 years

£65 for a 2 hour open pit lane

Might go for a watch if its free. You got times that its starting Ross?

Yeah you can get onto the pit wall for free... last time passengers were free too.

Not got times yet but I'll stick them up soon as I do

Well it's game over for this idea

Mentioned it to my girlfriend earlier and she went nuts

made the mistake of buying gerry cans on ebay, my dad somehow got sent the invoice for them so he then went nuts

It's not been a good day

Thats not so good. Can you not bribe them by letting them be passengers. I would tell my girlfriend to take a hike if she didnt let me go on but thats just me! I don't tell her how many shoes to by so she can't tell me what to do with scoob :crying:

Hope you get something sorted Ross
