WRX04
Just developed a knock from the rear left (54 Blob Saloon). Not noticable at speed but it sounds like the shocker banging about when you're at town speeds. Thought it was maybe an unseated spring but had a look and everything looks ok. Got a mate to push the inside of the boot down and it's coming from the top of the rear strut. Any ideas? Cheers. Link to comment

WRX04
Yeah, i'd spoken to a few folk before I bought the car that said they eat through the rear shocks. Last service I got advised that they'd need replaced soon and they quoted me for 2 rear strut assemblies?? Think it was something like £800. As there wasn't any noise I left it but i'm going to need to do something now..... Anyone know what it costs to replace the rear shocks with OEM parts? I'd consider going for an aftermarket shocker but would rather not replace all 4 if i don't have to and i'd prefer to do all 4 if I was moving away from std. Link to comment

Hey i've done 2 of these already it's common as muck on this model i done 1 last week cost £600 4 parts alone 2 genuine rear strut tops and 2 standard spec non genuine kyb shocks. I get on well with my local subaru dealer and they advised kyb's as standard spec replacements as thats wot they use (p.s there is a subaru technical bullitien about this problem stateing in it that it is a poor manufacture problem) hence the dealers not fitting genuine subaru rear shocks!. P.s i had on the 1st car i done a rattle was still there after doing the rear shocks not as bad but still noticable and found after hours of stripping everything out the boot 2 of the retaining screws and nuts had came of the rear spoiler and were rattleing about in the tailgate (which is another common problem according to subaru) good luck m8 Edited March 28, 2009 by adamski-44 Link to comment
big den
I found this article on the Scooby Mods forum (think it'a a N.America site) ref. repacking/regreasing STI struts: http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/04_sti_re...trut-t9972.html - think it's the same problem Wonder if this would cure the problem and help those with 'Out of Warranty' cases? mystery machine
Hi mate, and welcome to the forum I had the same symptom, caused by feckit rear choc absorbers. As others have said, it's a well known design fault (or quality issue, depending on your POV) with newage Imprezas. Subaru policy for warranted cars seems to be to replace the rubbish shocks with more rubbish ones (I guess they have some stock to use up). I'd seriously consider third-party items if I were paying for replacements. Link to comment

Cheers. Link to comment
xraydave
When I had this problem I just replaced the whole lot with a tein coilover kit, it transformed the car, as others have said no point in putting another set of shocks on that will only last a couple of thousand miles. Link to comment
