jimmymc1 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 i quite like the pics and as the guy posting them, posted different pics too which we are all usually seeing on a subaru forum . i thought they were definately worthy of posting! although he nor i expected that scottish scoobies is run in conjuction with photogeeks online where such expert photographers were going to shoot them down in flames! its a subaru site, the pics show a subaru in a different light to the norm? why the need to waffle about HDR , ITV and DVD is beyond me? come on guys just look at the pics and show us what they should look like rather than tellin us they look pash! a like them and i was working on the rail bridge on monday night could have gotten some interesting pics from up there!
4Hero Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 which part dont you understand? I understand that, your previous post on the other hand..
jimmymc1 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 sorry just though it was a bit critical? guys had pics done not sure his aim was to impress the sidc's photographers but i reckon most sidc forum users will like what those pics show? just didnt think it warranted a debate on the abilities of the photographer? to most the pics are fanastic? no....................?
thefastone Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 sorry mate, must just be a bad crowd... Don't get me wrong, I'm no genius, and I post most of my pics (good and not quite right, but not terrible) and I've already said that the car looks good, but there's a few things in all of the photography that I've seen (Looking at the Flickr Account also) that there's a lot that could improve about the shots... before the processing... to me, the composition is out in pretty much all of the shots, and to my eye, the processing adds in flaws... HDR is great if used sparingly, and can enhance the shot, but as we've said, its too much here... For example: Apart from the HDR, Im not going to keep going over that, the shot was slightly Squint, not a great deal, but I noticed it, but it was probably made more noticeable by the fact that the number place is also squint... you may have straightened to the background, but I'd have straightened to the car on this shot... only a minor thing, and I am being picky on this one as there's not a lot wrong with the composition... perhaps a slightly wider angle...? again, only a suggestion... This one was too dark when you shot it, the reason I know this is the HEAVY grain around the back of the car, which is what you get if you have to lighten too much this would have been sorted by taking some more longer exposure shots and combining them using the longer expsed back end with the less exposed other areas and the the less exposed sky. that's the first thing that I see in that shot, the second thing that I see is the back end has been clipped off the right hand side of the frame. I also think that you have brought out to much black in the sky, and finally theres a black shadow right down the right hand edge of the frame that probably makes the bumper being clipped off worse... but that could have been there in the original? This to me is the best of the 3 shots. less HDR done to it, a little brighter although theres still slight grain about the bottom of the car, you will probably only notice that at higher res, but still got the mean look that your after. But my beef with this one is definitely the composition is all over the place. what you have here is you've brought out the sky, and the colour in the cobbles which both look great, take the car away it would probably be a good shot... but the point about this shot is the car, and what you have done is enhanced the foreground and background to the detriment of the subject. if I'm using too many big words here, the sky and cobbles have overpowered the car, the first thing I should see is the car, the first thing I ACTUALLY see, is the foreground... now, this is the only one that I can do anything with as the others are already cropped right in, so Ive taken a few seconds to show you what I would have done with it. All I did, was straighten it, as it was really squint, and then cropped in, to show the car as the subject and to limit the distractions as at the end of the day people are paying for the car, and not the cobbles... Sorry if you feel its too critical, but if you take it as constructive criticism which is how were dealing it, giving points on how to improve the shots, then there's no issue... were all improving and theres not one day that I don't find faults in my own photography... but I TRY, sometimes unsuccessfully to learn from my own mistakes and the advice of others... Its all a learning curve...
st3ph3n Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 sorry just though it was a bit critical? guys had pics done not sure his aim was to impress the sidc's photographers but i reckon most sidc forum users will like what those pics show? just didnt think it warranted a debate on the abilities of the photographer? to most the pics are fanastic? no....................? The last text of the first post is "let me know what you think. geo". So people did. If you don't want an opinion then don't ask for it. George did though. It's an interesting take on the subject at hand - the car - but to my eyes it's not hugely enjoyable to look at. The last picture itself is really nicely composed (in my opinion) and without the very stylised processing I think to me it would look great. But the beauty of art is that it's the viewer and consumer who decides if they like it or not and enough people here have said they enjoyed it so good on them. I think the mona lisa is a dreadful painting, but it doesn't stop it being worth millions.
micra_wrc Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 i like the pictures to me they are nice to look at, the car stands out and is something different. I dont have a clue about HDR, composition, shadows etc but the experienced photographers on here obviously "get it". does it really matter that they dont like it or feel that its overly manipulated or have pointed out things that show its overly touched up? From George's original post he seemed quite pleased with it and seems to be taking the comments in good spirit also, I've noticed that us non-photographers have already started saying "taken on a camera phone/digital camera so excuse the quality of the pics" when posting up pics, which is a shame as we feel we need to excuse the quality of our pictures given that there are so many great photographers on here with the proper gear and have the passion/patience/money to learn the art so perhaps you pros can spare a thought for us mere mortals with no photography skill at all
jimmymc1 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 i didnt take the pics im just looking at the thread i kind of get the idea you think i have something to do with the pics i just thought the critisism was slightly unjust? but as you say he asked for thoughts and he got them! you have posted the pics and explained what you think is wrong with them! thankyou! too many on here just post a load of negative comments and no real explaination like you have with your take on the pics! much appreciated by the humble viewer!
jimmymc1 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 what micra-wrc said! thats kinda what i was trying to get at ! id like to post some pics ive done of my car but its a daunting prospect when theres so many critical pro's? puts me off posting tbh? but thats my problem i guess.
thefastone Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 Nah, nothing daunting about, as long as you are happy its all that matters at the end of the day, thing is were not as critical as you think mate, but opinions were asked for... and this was from someone who wants to make a living at photography? End of the day, just trying to help every one take the pics that they want to take... everyone is different, and can do different things... we all appreicate pics for what they are, so I really woudn't worry about it, and get YOUR pics up!!!! i quite like the pics and as the guy posting them, I think thats where it sounded like you that posted them...

Post away chap, it's the only way to learn to be honest. Almost everything I know about photography I've learnt of this here internet. You have to take the good with the bad if you are asking for comments, as Geo was with this post.

4Hero Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 (edited) Geo, you did say "let me know what you think"? Am I supposed to say these are excellent and lie? I could have just ignored this thread mind you.. I'm anything but a pro, unlike the guy you used, the shots on his site are very good! This is one of my shots, rip it apart, go on You are happy with your shots, like I'm very happy with this one, that's all that matters really. p.s. that's HDR too Edited March 25, 2009 by 4hero
sti_steve Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 I like that because your car hasnt turned into a cartoon. The background has a nice effect to it and the lighting draws your attention to the car where it should be

oobster Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 If I wanted some nice images of my car I think i'd choose Neil over the guy George got to do his daughter's car.

Maxxed_Ross Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Tam is the man when it comes to this stuff, you guys should check out his website. I was there that day and IMO those aren't the best two he took, but are certainly the most striking.

uRaBu5 Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 The thing with life is everyone has different tastes, views and opinions on everything – which is how it should be. You like what you like and that’s it. Geo – the shots are not my cup of tea as too much work has been done on them in Photoshop (the car looks fantastic without it) but they do not offend either (and it’s the results you wanted. Photoshop is a great tool and so much can be done to enhance and manipulate shots. Higgy doesn’t like it, but it can even help bring out the detail in his pics. Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder! Derek
