markymark Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 What exactly are we paying hundreds of £s a year for in road tax when the roads are in such a state ? My wifes nearside wheel The tyre's knackered. Just lucky it wasn't my car
C_WRX Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 Send in a claim, last year my wife got money back for damage to her wheel & tyre. Okay so there's a whooe load of their rules to get past but you never know.
Joe G Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 Try to get a photo of where it happened. A mate of mine buckled his alloy in a pot hole last year, took a photo of the pot hole and went to the local council with it. Took a lot of arguing but he eventually got the money for a new alloy. The state of the roads these days are terrible. I was watching the roads department re-tarring pot holes around the town yesterday in the pi55ing rain. Needless to say, today the pot holes are just the same as they were before with broken tar all over the place!!
dan_jess Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 Same happened to my mate a few weeks ago in his Astra Nurburgring. Hit a pothole and blew out his front tyre and put a big bulge in the rear one. Its at a bridge where the road goes down to a single lane so its pretty much unavoidable! Went down that road today and its still there and even bigger now, shocking!
ANDYJDMSTI Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 i claimed from Stoke council afew years back and got 2 new alloys from them. Took about 8 weeks but it worked. Just get as much evidence as you can i.e photos!
mystery machine Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 Sorry to hear about the bother, mate. The state of the roads at the moment is appalling. I notice the government's latest move in their insidious campaign against the motorist is to refer to road tax as 'car tax'... presumably just to make damned sure there's no implication your hard-earned will be spent on improving the roads
colzo Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 Some roads I commute on are appalling. Patching up potholes is no use either. The Councils/Government need to free up some money to sort them out. Our Road Tax will be getting used to bail out banks no doubt.
iainc Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 Totally agree... roads around Dyce are shocking too. Knackered a perfectly good 19" Eagle F1 the other week, luckily there was no damage to the wheel. Makes you glad you are paying £400 a year in road tax for it doesn't it.
StrikE Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 Makes you glad you are paying £400 a year in road tax for it doesn't it. Hey get it right m8 its a ''green tax'' lol nothing to do with the roads...........right. Phone the council that is responsible for that area and tell them to send out a claim form, take pictures of the damage and the cause IE the bloody big 'ole in the road. you will get your money back after you repair it
GazTurboUK Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Roads are a joke, i really wouldnt mind paying so much in road tax if the roads were actually kept in a good condition. If we arent keeping our eyes on the speedo so we dont go over the speed limits with more and more speed camera units setup then its watching right in front of you to see if there are any potholes needing to be avoided ... hardly good for hazard awareness
hosstheboss Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Totally agree... roads around Dyce are shocking too. Knackered a perfectly good 19" Eagle F1 the other week, luckily there was no damage to the wheel. Makes you glad you are paying £400 a year in road tax for it doesn't it. Wrecked a wheel and tyre on the Aberdeen Airport road last year. Took all the pics, filled in all the forms and waited..........and waited...........and waited then got told to **** off by the councils insurers - funny thing is it was the same insurance company that my car was insured through!! Had a right ding dong with them on the phone and cancelled my insurance, w****rs!!
StrikE Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Why don't they just fix the roads properly the first time? Surely it would save them a small fortune in the long run!!
david_taylor Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Defo claim mate. I done it with North Lanarkshire a few years ago. Took many a stupid form and lots of argueing, but I got the cash after about 3 months of the incident. Luckily the roads is Falkirk dont seem to bad, but I am in cumbernauld daily and they are a feckin joke. In abronhill I spend most of the time swerving around avoiding them, probably look like a drunk driver from behind! Problem is they tend to just fill the hole, which lasts till the first heavy frost or rain before it tears up. Or even worse this crappy gravel rubbish that they leave for the cars to clear while you get stone chips in the process!!
jamesm Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 It is actually cheaper for local authorities to pay out compensation for damage to vehicles than it is too undertake comprehensive resurfacing. The difficulty you sometimes have is arguing against an authority who claim they regularly inspect the roads and don't know about the pothole that damaged your car as 'it wasn't there last week'. The roads on my commute are abysmal and I bombard Renfrewshire Council with complaints so that if/when I do damage the car on a crater, I can say I reported it to them. Some roads in Renfrewshire are best negotiated with a moonbuggy. Roads are normally fixed by battering tar into water filled holes with a shovel Even when they do resurface, it is done on the cheap and the surface is failing within 6 months in some cases. I work in Local Government and we are constantly subject to budget cuts. There is simply no money to repair defects and fill holes properly. Unless we get a huge amount of new funding from Happy Alex S and his Scottish Government, the roads will just get worse and worse.
mick67 Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 milngavie is shocking for potholes and other road defects. also is it just me or is every road in glasgow city centre a mess. sauchiehall st & george square are the worst ones.
dipsy Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 Were i live there is quiet a lot of pot holes it ain't very comfy with coilovers and the council is doing the pavment's which to me there was nothing wrong with them .The roads are getting worse see the state of the kingsway roundabout's amount of pot holes round them and the Dundee- Aberdeen road needs patching in places
