Downpipe Options

ok i am saving up for my remap next year and am looking into downpipe options. I have a 56 plate impreza STI and am looking for advice re sportcat options. I know meercat do them but was wondering if anywhere else did them? I don't want to go down the decat route as the car is my everyday driver and knowing my luck i would get pulled by the fuzz for a roadside check. Are prodrive ones any good? Should i sjust stay with the standard downpipe and get it mapped? 'how much more power does sprtcat give you?

Cheers

I have just fitted the ScoobyWorld Ninja Downpipe with Fast flow Cat to my 2004 WRX, but just starting to type this I have a sneaky suspicion they might not do it for your cars year( :( !!)....can but ask them though?? I went sports cat option as can't be bothered with the MOT emissions hassle. Seems fine to me so far. They claim it has only a very slightly lower flow rate to that of a de-cat downpipe - but of course is a lot more money !

I was always told to look for a sports cat with 100 cell rather than the more restrictive 200 cell - bit of info to pass on.

If you are going to get a remap then from my experience I'd say change it plus the rest of the exhaust, you'll get more out of your car with the downpipe changed.

I could get Paul to make you a 100 cell sportcat DP. Think it was £270 each the last time I got two for Wuz.

Gus

is this a wide mouth type gus and what type of metal is it made of?

I am also looking for a full de-cat downpipe for my series1 Legacy RS (don't need a cat on a 1989 car  ), I think it is the same as a version 1 Impreza. I'm looking for an open bellmouth, and a standard flange where it meets the centre section - where is my best option and what is a ballpark price?

Oh, BTW Gus, sorry that I have been a lazy S.O.B, and haven't sent the Whiteline quick release strut brace clamps, will try to find a minute when I get back to work.

Gus I would take one of those as well if it was happening. Also for Hawkeye STI obviously.. Rest of the system is Hayward & Scott but I think that's the same fitment as OE.

Chris a 100 cell sports cat downpipe from Hayward & Scott is £475, excluding VAT and P&P, so all in probably over £560.. I e-mailed them.

Ninja downpipe from Scoobyworld for 2001-2005 cars will fit if you also fit a 2001-2005 cat pipe (as the 2001-2005 downpipe is longer than the 2006 onwards... so the two pipes together equal the same length as the OE pipes)

Milltek also do one, but fitment might be an issue unless you buy the whole Milltek system.

I think the 100 cell sports cat will only be a couple of crazy horses down on a full de-cat... and still pass an MOT..

As you might guess i've been looking at the same thing... let me know if you find any decent info...

Cheers, Mark

can anyone tell me is there much difference between a car mapped with the standard downpipe, cat delete pipe, striaght centre section and drager style back box compared to a car mapped with sportcat downpipe and the other bits i have mentioned? Just looking at my options. Do i really need a sportcat or does the standard downpipe give similar figures. is use my car everyday for work etc and do about 16000 miles a year. The sportcat is a lot of money and am just trying to decide if it is worth getting.

cheers

sports dcat v's full dcat is down only 3bhp as an average, this of course will differ but useful as a guide.

As Gus stated, he supplied me 2 Sports Cat 100Cell D/P for 270 each....................

Build quality was VERY GOOD and I HIGHLY recommend them for these!!

but how does the standard downpipe compare to a sportcat is there really that much advantage?

As far as I know............ yes there is quite a difference.. I think the standard downpipe is fairly restrictive (couldn't guess at figures). Have a look at the Meercat site at the picture of their "snakehead" downpipe beside (what I assume) is a standard downpipe. The difference (in the mouth at least) is huge.

BTW - a Meercat 3" 100 cell downpipe is £420 fitted.

They do cost a few pennies, but if you're planning on getting the car mapped anyway, then might as well give the map the best chance you can - and justify the cash!

There's one on the way to me...

Out of interest what cars did you fit them to etc? Was it Hawkeyes i take it? Is the Hawkeye DP a different size from the 01-05 cars? Just making sure i have the right thing on the way to me.. :D

Not sure at all of the power differences between OEM dp -v- sports cat / decat dp....but everyone I spoke to about it prior to changing my exhaust system, including other owners / folk selling me the parts / AndyF, said to definitely get a decat dp or if the MOT worried me the sportscat dp as it was very much worth it. I changed the whole exhaust system then had the remap so can't comment on the stages difference but I do know that what I have now is VERY different both in power and sound to what it was standard. :D

Yes the money is a sore one when getting a sportscat but it appears to be worth it. You'll end up just wondering "what if" if you don't and need to then get another remap. I am already thinking about the next stage and it wasn't even a month ago !!

Andy's site for your car I believe says (below), must be tempting just to go straight to level 2 !!

06-07 STI UK/EURO 2.5 STD 265 BHP

Level 1 290-300 bhp

Sportscat Exhaust System

EcuTek custom remap (compares to PPP)

Level 2 340-360 bhp

Full Decat turbo back 2.5 " or 3” bore

Walbro 255 l/hr uprated fuel pump

EcuTek custom remap

K+N panel filter

ok here is hoping that richie cross will see this. I have opted for a meercat sportcat and was wondering if anyone has fitted one without getting mapped straight away???????? Was thinking about fitting it this year and getting remap next year. I know i wont get the full benefits until the map but i will get some benefits but is it safe and adviseable to run without getting mapped?????

cheers

Here's a question also, not highjacking the thread in anyway tho.

If you go for a full de-cat 3'' bore system can the cat be made/fitted into a rear box for easy mot change over? just a thought that may help out!

Ive been texting Richie tonight, apparently he's on earlies just now so hopefully I can help. Richie's wagon had a sportscat fitted way before a remap, infact I'm sure it was over a year before Rich remapped the car, as he waited until a larger turbo and STi intercooler were fitted.

Hi Chris,

Had read the thread at the start but not recently. Should've sent me goats etc :(

Yep, as Stewart said I got the sportscat fitted ages ago. That was one of my first mods.

Nice snakehead number and Wullie ran it through a testing station and it was miles away

from any figures that would fail.

It made it sound a wee bit better and then I got the straight through centre section from Meercat

a wee while after that.

I'd been told I'd only need the remap when I got the up pipe changed.

When I did all the mods, Meercat gave me a nice slip joint up pipe to go with everything else.
