T11GAR Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Hi newbie to this forum! Wanted some advise please. I have a GB270. It had all shock absorbers changed about 4 weeks ago due to handling probs. On Sunday while driving on uneven B roads car tried to kill me. It was all over the place and you could only keep it on the road by doing 40mph or less!!!!! Got it picked up by subaru assistance and the garage agreed that there was a prob with the steering. They struggled to find what the problem was but decided that it was a rear shocker that needed replaced. Picked it up tonight and although it feels a little better it still feels light at the front, unhappy on rough road surfaces and feels like it has hugely reduced grip at the front end. It feels like driving my OH's old estate car big and wallowy. Completely lost its crispness. I don't feel confident that it is safe to drive and will take it back first thing tomorrow. The garage said that they THOUGHT it was ok but that I should drive it and see what I thought. Any advice/suggestions would be gratefully received!!
bobbyc Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 (edited) Already had 6 new shocks fitted to mine, first time they replaced the rear ones & shortly after replaced all four, cars due a service soon & i'm convinced the front nearside is on it's way ouy again although the car still handles fine. Always felt the 270 was a bit light at the front end but have not had any handling problems. Edited December 18, 2008 by bobbyc
dipsy Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Did they do the geometry after fitting the shocks
T11GAR Posted December 18, 2008 Author Posted December 18, 2008 Did they do the geometry after fitting the shocks Yes they did that. The car felt fantastic-like new immediately after but it only lasted for about three weeks!!!
bobbyc Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 I think like the rest of us while the car is under warranty you'll just have to keep pestering the garage, all they will fit is the crappy KYB struts, the only way to go is get a set of teins fitted but until youv'e got a spare grand just keep throwing it back at them.
scooby222 Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 ive an 05 sti but same problems, totally lost faith in the car and subaru until i bit the bullet and bought a set of bc coilovers from apex performance over on scoobynet,560 delivered. would have liked teins but at half the price im delighted. try asking subaru to contribute towards uprated items as you'l continually be back for the standard ones im afraid
Smiler AS Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 (edited) Geometry, Subarus own tolerances are massive, would get it done by specialist, worth the money, enjoyment and prolong tyre life. Edited December 19, 2008 by Smiler AS
GBSTU70 Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 Sorry to hear you're having probs, mine's handling like a dream so yours is def something that should get sorted by Subaru!
bigal024 Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 I've had big problems strut wise with my 270 also. Kev At T&C told me that they are particularly bad for eating the chocolate struts. Dunno why. I'm looking at places to get the geometry re-done on mine, as since having 5 new struts in a year, the tyres are starting to wear pretty un-evenly. Al
Subarstar Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 (edited) It feels like driving my OH's old estate car big and wallowy. Did you mean the car......... or Stuarty?............ Kidding! Tell T & C to get it sorted sharpish! Or you'll be sending them a real mechanic to have a wee word!! Should've bought a classic! Edited December 19, 2008 by Subarstar
T11GAR Posted December 19, 2008 Author Posted December 19, 2008 Did you mean the car......... or Stuarty?............Kidding! Tell T & C to get it sorted sharpish! Or you'll be sending them a real mechanic to have a wee word!! Should've bought a classic! Watch it!! Problem is now T&C are telling me that there is nothing wrong with my car. I have driven scoobies for the last seven years I feel that I would know. They wanted me to go down today and show them what the problem is!!!! I pointed out that was really there job. The service manager also said that they were just horrible cars to drive. I think he would do well in sales I then phoned Subaru who said that they would try to help. When I went back today they were v nice but not terribly helpful. Think I will have to leave it in Subaru's hands. S&S have offered to do anything they can to help but they are 200 miles away! Thanks for all of your responses.
Subarstar Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 Oh no! Sounds like the Subaru dealers strike again!!! You would think that with the economic climate the way it is, they would be bending over backwards to help their customers. Much as it pains me to say it, .......maybe S&S need to be consulted! Sounds like T&C are as much use as the preverbial ashtray on a motorbike!!!! Hope you get things sorted out soon sis.
