I Hate These New Tyres - Toyo T1-r

I was using the goodyear eagle f1's before, and I wish I had them back. :P Problem was I was shredding them since they were 225's on a classic.

So I changed to 215's in the shape of Toyo T1-r's , which come recommended here. Specifically; from 225/40 to 215/35..

I've put about 350 miles on them so they should be run-in fine now, but they feel gripless round corners and very very unplanted and skittish.

I just had the whiteline stuff done not long ago and absolutely loved it with the Eagle F1's, but now the handling feels worse than before any whilteline stuff went on the car!

whats going on!?

anyone want some tyres? swap for 215/40 F1's :D

Never had Toyo's on, but I had similar thoughts on my Yoko Parada's in the wet when thought they were meant to be good all-rounders, but I think it feels like surfaces can be just a bit slippy at the moment which I've noticed when driving the other car (well it is in the Lanarkshire countryside!). I have heard of giving tyres 500miles before noticing a difference, perhaps just a bit more time needed ?

Funny what people get used to. I went the other way, had Toyo T1R's and swapped to Eagle F1's. I was the same as you... hated the new tyres, although after about a thousand miles I'm pretty much used to the F1s now and do quite like them.

Think it was only the likes of Bridgestones that I liked the moment they were on the car without needing a bedding in period.

May be a silly question

Have you checked the pressure of them?

I had the Toyos on when I had the scoob and found them to be fine in most weather,

I've not long changed the tyres on my current car to Goodyear F1's and to start with I thought they were total pants.

I was even thinking of just binning them and getting a complete set of something else, and when your buying 18" at 275 they aint cheap

Now after a few more miles the tyres are into their zone, so to speak,

and last weekend I was taking the mick out of a front wheel drive car in the wet, not bad for a 5 series BMW :D

Just give them a chance to bed in a bit more, they should come good

I bought a wheel and tyre package for one of my old Imprezas... and it came with T1R tyres fitted, I expected them to be crap after hearing a friend with a P1 complain about them, compared to P-Zeros too!! But I took the car on a ScottishScoobies run shortly after fitting and they really impressed me. Was a baptism of fire to be honest, probably did a good few hundred miles worth of wear in a day, but was really surprised by them.

Given the choice though, Eagle F1 tyres are what I use.

Cheers,

Grant

Would it be more down to the profile size, 225/40 down to 215/35 is quite a big change?

My boss has 35 profile tyres on his Civic Type R, loves the looks but hates the drivng, too light on the steering wheel, skittish, just no confidence, think he wishes he stuck with the OEM wheel / tyre setup.

very interesting, thanks for the responses.

as regards to tyre pressure.. I have been experimenting, I started them off at 35psi, which is the pressure I enjoyed on the eagles, and went down to about 32 and still found them wild.

Yesterday I was considering toying with this slammed down Civic around livingston, but it just hoored it around the roundabout where I had absolutely no chance. it was the final straw! :D

I will persist with them.. well.. I have to cos I cannae afford to change em now! :P

yes, I would like to know that too! would the tyre size alone account for the difference? :D

Got 35 profile tyres on mine (235/35/19) and they are better riding than the original 225/45/17s. Less tramlining and less road noise than the RE070s.

I had the same prob with toyo's, after some research and speaking to a couple of chassis tuners they rekon there is a bit of flex in the wall so they move slightly on the rim.

This is exactly what i was feeling, the car seemed unpredictable on turn in then settled. grip wasn't bad but confidence in the twisties was not great.

I tried playing with the pressures and found for me, running 3 to 4 psi more helped.

On a 215/40/17 i run 37psi front and 34 rear.

I've had Toyo T1Rs for the last year and a half and like them in both the wet and dry. I think a lot is to do with pressures and with the right settings your confidence will come back. To be fair the roads are a tad greasy at the moment.

Tyres are strange, what seems to work in one size doesn't work at all in another. I've bought tyres in one size before and found them great, then bought the same type for another car in a different size and they've been utterly useless.

Maybe T1-Rs work on classic 16"s so people recommend them but not on 17/18"s where they get slated.

I think it's more that people react differently to the way a tyre moves. Some people prefer a softer tyre that moves a bit more before it loses grip, others prefer something that sticks like glue but when it starts sliding it starts going quickly IYKWIM.

FWIW it was 235/35/19 T1Rs that I had and liked, although they were part worn when I got them so not sure how they would have felt when brand new.

Feel of the Toyos is different based on the size of the tyre in my experience.

I can attest to this because I run them on all four corners of my scoob, and have recently fitted them to my MR2 turbo rears (previously Bridgestones). Couldn't get Bridgestones in the MR2 size for some reason (seem to have stopped making that particular size) so changed to the Toyo having been pleased with them on scoob.

I run my MR2 rears wider than Scoob tyres.

On the scoob they feel more planted, whilst on the MR2 they get more of a wiggle on.

You get used to it, I'm back to powersliding the MR2 with confidence

I've only had my (16") T1-Rs on for a day and I'm happy with them already. I had them on my last car (they really managed to tame my 160+bhp Metro with LSD (not an easy task)) and liked them so stuck with what I knew for the impreza.

They are dealing with the muddy lanes really well although I doub't they'll last a year.
