Who Runs 2 Cars?

Recommended Posts

I have a little plan in my head to purchase a 2nd car, this car will be something older and very much performance orientated so will need to keep my Cooper S for the normal day to day stuff.

Just wondering how you insure 2 cars, can you put it on your existing policy for your first car? or do you need to start another policy altogether?

I will be the only person driving both cars so they wont be on the road at the same time obviously.

I'm a bit worried I will be crippled by running 2 cars that aren't cheap to insure, then tax, Mot etc...

Thought about selling the mini and buying something with cheap insurance to run along side my 2nd car but in the present climate it's not worth selling as I would'nt get much for it.

Or do I sell the Mini and not bother buying a 2nd car but a newer performance car that will be reliable and fun?? I cant decide!

I have a couple of cars I run. 1 brand new and thirsty and 1 old car thats also very thirsty!! I stuck the olders cars insurance on the same policy but I know a lot of companies will not allow a 2nd car policy. Depends on your company!

Also, if you are only going to be using the 2nd car as a toy and dont want to insure it full time there is an alternative. www.dayinsure.com are a company who will sell short time insurance i.e 1 day for £12 or something like that. Im sure they are partners with Norwich Union, it covers you Fully Comp. Only downside is that youll need an extra secure lockup so it doesnt get nicked in the meantime!

Hope that helps...

Colin - I think a lot of the insurance companies are doing it now. Admiral and Direct Line spring to mind.

However - I know my mate has his kit car insured with a completely different company for low mileage and his other policy and car is certainly factored into the price as they know the toy isn't an every day thing.

I am off weekend to get a lil fiat for the wife to run around when not using the scoob, shopping etc.

The best price i found was aplan @ £76 pm i didnt think that was too bad considering some were telling me £1200+

The companies selling multiple car policies seemed to be very expensive but then we all differ with no claims/age etc.

I run 2 separate policies, quotes for a multi-car deal were more expensive

Im 27, 3 points

2007 Skoda Octavia VRS diesel estate £400 fully comp 25000 miles a year 8 years no claims- SWIFTCOVER

1999 Impreza turbo UK £500 fully comp 3000 miles a year - Bell direct

Used to have a Celica GT4 as a second car and Adrian Flux allowed me a discount for having a lot of no claims discount on another car.

The impreza is a second car and due to the low mileage I do in it I dont think its too costly to have 2 cars(except when I start buying go faster bits!)

Cheers for the advice guys, will have another wee think!

BMW 525 tds for her

BMW 528i Sport for me

Feck insurance it is too expensive with the credit crunch, the fine will be cheaper :(

3 cars here all seperate policies, can't put them all on one policy as companies that do multi policy insurance don't do scoobs with a few tweeks ;)

ive got 3 cars insured at the mo with keith michaels classic wrx,v4 sti type r and astra gsi! the cheapest quote i manange to get was admiral multicar! but then keith michaels managed to beat it slightly :( its still not cheap tho!

4 cars and two motorbikes here and all are on seperate policies. Over the years I have managed to rack up maximum no claims on each.

Looked at the multi-car policies but they were far more expensive than individual ones.

Col, if you mention that you have another car etc.... you generally get a hefty introductory discount anyway.

Currently insure all 4 cars (3 with swiftcover and one with KM) and 2 bikes (both with Bennetts) fully comp inc business use for £854.

Its great being older

I have two cars, both insured on separate policies. Multi car policies cme out more expensive.

2002 Impreza WRX is insured through KM. Pay around £680 fully comp with business class 1 and I think 6 years NCB, and I do around 8k a year in it. (I am 29)

1996 Pug 106 Diesel is insured though Bell Direct. Pay round £240 fully comp with business class 1 and just 1 years NCB, and I do around 10k a year in, mainly commuting and business use.

The 106 pays for itself. In terms of insurance, if I did 18k miles a year in the Subaru and declared that annual mileage to the insurance company, the premium would go up by about £200. Also costs buttons to run, compared to commuting in the Subaru.

We run 2 cars here, both on seperate policies, but both with Norwich Union Direct.

Impreza sport for me, £200 with full ncd

Vectra Supertouring for the wife £470 with no ncd

It's general rule that a lot of insurance companies will mirror the bonus that you have on your first car, so it's worth trying your own insurance company first before changing. If not, check out the competition.
