bobbyc Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Front ones this time, back to Grieves & the verdict is fcuked again, got to say Charlie & the staff at Grieves are first class just wish Subaru would bite the bullet & fit decent shock absorbers, once your out of warranty Subaru don't want to know even though the garage are obliging.

Does that mean you re going to go for a set of Tein super streets with your other goodies
scooby222 Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 i guess if they admit theres a problem and offer an alternative they couldnt afford it! they bank on us getting fed up and buying decent kit ourselves-as im about to do. though that pothole at 90 on the way to aberfeldy on sat morning certainly didnt help lol!
colzo Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Wonder if the shock issues will carry over onto the 08 models?

mctwistuk Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 sorry to hear this bobby. my car goes in to s&s on thursday for them to look at my knocking struts.
billyboy Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Wonder if the shock issues will carry over onto the 08 models? Every possibility they are fitted with the same cheap crap KYB shockers although the rear shockers are now a shorter design due to the new mutil-link suspension.Only time will tell.
mctwistuk Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 Just had call from s&s and i am getting a new rear and new front passenger strut. They wont replace them all unless they are faulty as Subaru will charge them. They did say that the struts have been uprated due to the problems. Well i guess i will just need to wait and see. Does anyone have the details for Subaru uk as i am going to write to them and ask if they wil replace the other 2.

I had the backs changed then 3 weeks later one front changed at Nobles under the warranty on my 04 Sti, had to take it back yesterday to get the other front done as well, it went pretty quickly after the driver side front was changed. I have to say I was surprised that they only changed one last time, I would have thought they would have done them in pairs. It'll be interesting to see how long they last.
mctwistuk Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Bobby were both struts broke or just 1. Reason i am asking is because i phoned Subaru uk yesterday and was given some excuse about they wont replace things unless they are broken hence reason my car is only getting 1 front and 1 rear replaced. They did say something about they have been modified for better greasing or something. I have now written them a letter to see if they will replace all the struts as i am not happy at having a car with one side having new struts and 1 side having old struts. I have heard this can make car unsafe. Also any car i have had in the past that has had struts replaced had them done in pairs even under warranty.
scooby222 Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 ask them(garage or subaru) for WRITTEN confirmation that the other two are fully functional and that the car is safe to drive with one side replaced, which you will then get checked by an independent engineer. this is shocking treatment but the same i got-i wouldnt replace one strut on my wee van never mind a high performance car!!
thefastone Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 yeah, seems like a false economy really because they know that they are going to have to change the others soon enough... if the new ones are modified then surely they should be replacing them on spec...

Chris I've always had them replaced in pairs, when the nearside rear went on my STI Greives replaced both rear shocks no questions asked, on the 270 the rear struts were replaced as a pair, & now the front nearside has gone, Charlie in servicing had me drop the car in for a quick check on Thurs lunchtime, confirmed the front nearside is duff & it's booked in on Monday to have both front struts replaced. There have been several upgrades but they obviously aint working, I do know someone that has had four sets replaced under warranty & require a fifth but Subaru UK won't entertain him now the warranty has expired, thats even with the garage asking Subaru if they can carry out the work as a goodwill guesture. A nice set of Teins are the way to go but if the cars under warranty just keep returning it to the garage. Must admit I've always had a first class service from all departments at Greives
Ian Coulter Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 Just noticed a knocking from the nearside rear this afternoon. What age are the cars whose have failed? Mine is an MY06 STi. Regards, Ian
big den Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 mine is a 56 plate sti. What mileage had you done before you started noticing these problems? Den
neil_joyce Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 What mileage had you done before you started noticing these problems?Den I`d done less than 20k miles before mine were knact. And I`d be very dissapointed if the dealer only changed one side, I`d find that quite unacceptable and demand a pair. Or all 4
bigal024 Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 Wonder if the shock issues will carry over onto the 08 models? I had all 4 of mine replaced by Town And County after just 4000 miles on my GB270! Whilst in getting done, they told me that they had already had a 2008 car getting its struts replaced, so I'm pretty sure they are still fitting the crap ones made of chocolate. Speaking to Kev at T&C when they did mine, he reckons most of the problems with the struts could be cured with a mod, rather than replacing the whole strut, but for some wise reason, Subaru wont do it.
bobbyc Posted October 7, 2008 Author Posted October 7, 2008 Must thank Grieves for the hassle free repair of the struts checked the car out last Thursday & replaced all four struts on Monday, so watch this space & we'll see how perform.

I wrote to Subaru UK and got a nice useful letter from them today saying that the struts don't come in pairs and therefore only faulty ones will be replaced. They are as much use as the struts. So what do i do now???????????? chris

scooby222 Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 i would say youve got a handful of options- try what i did, insisting on written assurance that the remaining struts are safe and that the handling wont be affected buy your own either original or aftermarket have the 2 replaced wait 2 months have the other 2 replaced, repeat until warranty expires contact what car, citizens advice etc and try to shame them into doing the right thing having done option a once with success i cant be bothered with the hassle and have decided to try a set of the apex coilovers on snet. o and for the record last time i was told that it wasnt a common fault and that theyd never had another case of it, but the new struts were an improved design and it definitely wouldnt happen again. i love these cars but ever get the feeling your being taken for a mug?
fpan Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 (edited) What are the symptoms of the front or rear shocks failing? My front left one knocks on certain kurbs/bumps when going slowly over it. It has been happening 5k km after fitting prodrive springs. The car seems to be hadnling fine nevertheless. Cheers P.S. I have been hearing different opinions about the reason for this. Powerstation (where I had them fitted) told me it is common and it is the spring coils touching but Prodrive told me it could be either a failing shock or the spring not seated properly on the cap.
