david_taylor Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Is your car parked within the proximity of your garden? Never had a problem with them on the motor, but one was using my front garden as a litter tray. I ended up buying a ultrasonic animal deterant online. It sends out a ultra high pitched noice which cats find irritating. Took a couple of weeks for the cats to figure out that it was always at my garden, and they now avoid it like the plague. It has a sensor that the feckers set off. I know it works because not only do I have no cat problems, but when you put the batteries in and hold it up to your face, you can make out the nasty noice just. Certainly a soloution for the garden, and maybe the car if you are in a drive, etc. Link here http://www.primrose-london.co.uk/cat-repeller-40-p-402.html
mystery machine Posted September 23, 2008 Author Posted September 23, 2008 Thanks for all the suggestions folks. Today I showed someone from work the damage and he agreed that it looked like the work of a cat - the little paw-shaped marks on the bonnet scoop being the biggest clue. I tried polishing the damage out tonight, but as expected it made only a little difference (does it ever really work with anything but the lightest of light scratches?). For some time I've use cat repellent to keep the beasts off my grass - only one particular brand seems to do the trick, provided I put it down often enough. I am now deploying the stuff on the driveway and around the car - so we'll see how that goes. This repellent isn't cheap, so I am still rightfully pissed off to have to spend so much controlling someone else's 'hobby', but hey-ho - what do they care? Still, worse things happen, etc.

Sadly I've already been there - installed one a couple of months back. Seemed to work - until it was permanently removed by some kind passer-by (within days of fitting) I would certainly recommend it for a back garden, though
mystery machine Posted September 23, 2008 Author Posted September 23, 2008 Owners can't tell cats what to do - they do what they want - there are products you can get to kee them away and a few other methods are mentioned here. You're right - owners can't control cats. Which IMHO makes them pretty lousy pets - fine for the owners, of course - but I wonder how many care about the misery they're inflicting on others?Of course, dogs can be a nuisance too (barking, fouling) and in the worst cases, dangerous. However, with the right training and owner attitude, they can be managed - and if they're not managed, the law has ways and means of dealing with them and their irresponsible owners. Unfortunately, no such protection seems to exist from the menace of cats There's not much chance a cat's claws can scratch paintwork so much it can't be hand polished out. This is simply incorrect - I've spoken with several people, some cat owners - and more than one has actually witnessed a cat making an indelible scratch in a car's paintwork. It's not a myth, I'm afraid mate! However, you'll be glad to know that I personally don't intend to resort to violence to solve this...
mystery machine Posted September 23, 2008 Author Posted September 23, 2008 Get a decat for your car!!!I had to paws for thought before I got that one
stevenhiggster Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 (edited) If new damage appears, I might consider that!If you don't mind me asking... Where did you get your proximity alarm? How much did it cost? How do the sensors work? Many thanks. Mine is part of my clifford alarm, I got it from GAP security, cant remember exactly how much but I did haggle the guy down a bit. I think it was supposed to cost about £650 for all the options I chose but I ended up gettin it for about £400. It's just a sensor stuck on the inside of the windscreen behind the mirror, it must just create some sort of force field around the car You don't have to touch it like with some alarms just stand within about 6 inches of it It's funny as hell when people park next to it and you can see their confused faces wondering what the noise is, thinkin it's their own car. I saw a woman sit and open and close her door about 10 times before realising it wasn't her car making the noise Edited September 23, 2008 by stevenhiggster

I own 2 cats and one also sits on my bonnet and the roof but I have to say there are no scratch marks on the car. A cat wouldn't need its claws to jump up the small height to a bonnet IMHO - but I can only compare my cat and go by my own experience. I am not denying yours was caused by a cat's claws - more surprised. The ones round your area may be tougher and have big claws Mine is a big softy.
mystery machine Posted September 23, 2008 Author Posted September 23, 2008 Not twenty minutes ago, my wife chased away a cat that was loitering at the rear wheel of my Scooby. Cat repellent has obviously made feck-all difference.

And if it isn't, then you'll probably be aggravating and already aggravated situation.

Wish the cat owner(s) around here would keep their cats' claws as trim as yours...

phil_g Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 (edited) For nearly 4 months now, Ive had cat problems in my garden and on my car. Its got to the stage Ive to check my garden everyday now for dead mice or ripped apart birds. To top it of the garden its getting cat $hite in it everyday and stinks of cats piss. Its a daily routine ive to powerwash everything to get rid of the smell. Thats just the garden, the car the cats walk over the roof, sit on the bonnet or the rear spoiler. Ive complained to owners but they dont give a crap. Ive tried all the old wives tales to keep them out, Ive had pest control over, bought that electronic device to scare them off. Nothing works. To top it off, for the last several weeks ive not had a nights good sleep, as these cats are left out at night to roam free. Where do the end up ? In my garden always fighting amongst themselves. Its got to the stage im sick and tired of these pests. Yes I fecking hate cats, my kids cant play in there own garden cause of the $hite and piss the cats leave behind Only last week my little one came in howling as she came across a dead bird in the garden that was ripped apart. My colleagues in E.H. in Falkirk Council certainly do! Gus
ScoobySounds Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 no worries then phil, it was the 'hearing them squeal' thing that was somewhat disturbing about your post. Incidentally, Back on topic.. I once found loads of paw prints on my roof, and on inspecting the car all around, I found loads of wee scratches on the nearside wing and naturally I blamed the cats too - until a bodyshop guy pointed out that the scratches were actually from driving too close to branches at the side of the road! Just a thought for others reading this as a further assist for scratch diagnostics.

Phil, I think you meant to quote someone else - I'm not a cat owner and I wasn't in the least bit offended by your post.Good luck getting rid of the pests anyway - let us know if you find a (non violent) solution
