Potential Subaru Owner Looking For Some Information.

Hello everybody, thanks for taking time to look at this. I'm considering treating myself to a second hand Subaru for my 30th b'day i'll probably be looking to spend £10-11000 depending on what i get for my current car in a trade in.

What are the service intervals? Roughly how much for a service at a dealer or independent garge? What sort of mileage should i expect to get if driven sensibly? What is the capacity of the fuel tank and roughly how many miles will i get out of a tank if driven sensibly? (My last car was a 04 plate Civic Type R it had a 50 litre tank if my memory serves me right and i couldn't get more than 320 miles out of it). Anyway if anyone can be bothered answering my question i would appreciate it and maybe even by myself an Impreza. ;)

Thanks

Service intervals vary depending on age, for the kind of money you are looking at I'd guess they'd all be every 10k (earlier ones were 7.5k IIRC). Can't remember how much the services cost but I'm due my 20k on the 06STi soon.

Fuel tank varies with age as well, early ones were 50l later ones 60l. If you get 320 miles out of any of them you'll be doing very well... I get 220-260 out of mine (60l) on average and the very best I got so far with granny style driving (to see how much mpg I could get) still only seen me get about 310 out of it. Would be better on a longer run though I guess.

Have found with the two scoobs I've had though, other than servicing (and modding ;)) you really don't need to chuck money at them (other than fuel obviously :D), have always found them very reliable and fun to drive.

Thanks for taking time to reply.I'm going to start looking for one i think. Cheers

Take a look in the "Items For Sale" section mate, there are some nice ones in there at the moment around the price you are looking at. I would rather get mine off someone on here - at least you will know it's history and that it has been looked after.

I get around 300 miles from a tank and mine has a few mods and a remap..... ;)

Welcome, nearly.

I too came from a CTR (03reg), and have to say you will enjoy it if you change. A different drive - some aspects better some not so. Performance wise the Subaru feels (and is) better and that's me just going for the WRX rather than the STi. Definately very much enjoy having the Scooby is the bottom line, but have fond memories of the CTR.

As a comparison to the CTR it will be more expensive in most ways - servicing / fuel / repairs / road tax. Also there's a strong chance you'll be bitten by the mod bug if you stick around on here and of course that's not cheap. :D

If you trade-in and go to a dealer there's a likely possibility you'll end up with (in comparison) an older/higher mileage car but a warranty -v- selling yours private and checking out e.g. the For Sale section on here where you can get a nice example that someone has spent money/time on. Your call as to what you'd prefer there.

My last service was the bigger 3year/30k one - £400 from dealer. I'm going back to the dealer this year again for the 4years/40k service (cause I have a credit due) and I think it's about £200ish. There are some very good specialists spread over the country that will do a good job on servicing and mods for less than the dealers.

If it is a Subaru Impreza you want then just take your time checking them out to make sure you get the right one, like any 2nd hand car out their there are bad examples about.

Don't be afraid to ask questions on here if you need to. A friendly bunch really ! :(

I have a 2004 WRX

Service intervals - every 10,000 miles or 12 months

Subaru 20,000 mile service - £200

Independent 30,000 mile service (quite a big service, includes replacing all filters, oils and spark plugs) - £300

Fuel tank - 60 litre

Miles on a full tank if driven sensibly with the occasional blast - 310+ miles

Go for it. :D

And as Scoobysailor says search in the for sale sections and you might find what you are looking for. ;)

Cheers guys. I actually have an oil burner just now (Vectra sri 150) and i now know what to expect if i decide to trade it in for an Impreza cheers. Just got to find the right one now. I also know how these forums can end up costing a fortune in mods but i'll manage to keep that to myself- what the mrs doesn't know won't hurt her.

Hi Ross,

Glad to hear your making the jump to the Impreza brigade, I have 2 for sale at the moment, 1 of which I think you may be interested in,

http://forums.sidc.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=118255

It's a wee bit more than you were looking to pay, but well worth the cash, I have driven Impreza's for around 8 years and have enjoyed every mile. On the service front it's just had it's 50,000 cam belt service so the next is not due for ages and will only be around £200.

If your interested get back in touch.

Cheers

Just a few more questions guys:

Am i right in thinking that i should run the car on Super Unleaded (V-Power) etc?

What will the road tax for a year increase to when the government increase it?

How impressive is a standard Impreza as the large majority of the ones on the road have been modified in some way? How big a difference is there between the 260bhp and the rest of the other engine power out puts? What engine is best?

I guess the last question will only be answered by getting off my back side and actually going for a test drive but any comments will be appreciated.

And finally what is the difference between an Sti and a WRX ?

Rally Fever i've had a look at your car and although it's a cracking car it's out off my price range sadly. I'll probably be going down the route of a dealer as i've got another car to get rid off.

- V-Power or Super Unleaded

- £440ish for anything registered after March 2001 I think, thats for WRX or STi.

- Depends on which Impreza you're looking at, a standard WRX isn't likely to blow your knickers off in a straight line and would struggle to get away from your CTR, however it will be better than most things around the twisties and the all-weather ability is a big plus.. with a couple of mods you'll be very impressed at the grip levels IMO.

If you are planning to fit modifications to the car, then you should really go for a Newage STi, these cars come with a much stronger bottom end and also have the 6-speed gearbox fitted as standard too, which removes most of the mechanical worries that WRX owners have to face when they throw a few mods and a remap at their car. However, the STi has a pretty solid ride compared to the WRX and might not be suitable if you're planning to do serious mileage on our cr@p roads.

- If you want to buy a car, not modify the car regarding the BHP (which we all say to start with, but few manage) then I would probably say that the best car you could buy would be a 2006-2007 WRX with the Prodrive Performance Package fitted to it. Its got the performance of an STi, lovely torquey 2.5 engine, probably slightly cheaper to insure, can pick them up for VERY cheap money and will just require some handling/visual/braking mods to finish off....... but if you think there is an outside chance that you would go for more power, then you're better going for a 2003-2005 STi because they come with a degree of mechanical over-engineering as standard.

Dont do it....get out while your still able....before you know it you'll be destitue and have the BIGGEST smile you've ever had when your screaming round a track or a "private road" in deepest darkest western scotland :P....

If i had a choice i'd buy a lada riva 1200E...it's got to be the 'e' model as they have reclining front seats...Make sure you get one with the lada tool box and services will be a doddle....

No... not Subaru....must resist more mods....thththththththhththth

the difference between a wrx and a sti? Night and day mate. :P

Well what does an STI have that the WRX doesn't or vice versa?

Lots, some of it important... like the stronger bottom end, 6-spd box and brembo brakes.

As an "auld mannie" who traded a very comfy BMW 5 Series for my first ever Scoobie, an RB320, i feel i can answer some of your questions -

Fuel consumption - dina make me laugh! I get about 22mpg or 240 miles from a tank on a very good day!

Servicing - my mate just paid Town and County £440 for a 30,000 mile service.

Road tax - £400 this year............

Comfort - its like bein in a empty biscuit tin with a bumble bee that is at the epicenter of an earthquake!

Fun - NOTHING ELSE I'VE DRIVEN COMES CLOSE!!!!
