Best Way To Mod A Bugeye

Recommended Posts

Hey people

Recently purchased my first subaru a 52 plate bugeye WRX which i've been more than happy with. Found out about your site through a mate who said that it was the best place to be for subaru owners. Now i've had the WRX for 4 months now i'm looking to start adding horses to it.

Would i be better adding the prodive pack through subaru or heading down the other route of getting one of the specialist garages to do their thing with a full decat, uprated fuel pump, panel filter, and a remap which when i priced the two the prodrive pack was £200 dearer.

My car is standard the now and not looking to go daft with the power about 260 to 280 would be good all info would help.

cheers

steve

Ps first car i've owned where other impreza owners wave my wife found this odd why people were waving at her when she used the car now she even wave's :P

hi mate iv got a bugeye sti with a full decat,it depends on what backbox you fit with it as i had the nur spec r and it was too loud on a full decat, but i had a scoobysport with a full decat and it sounded good, not too loud, now i have a 3"aps system and it is spot on,a few guys on here get theres made up to what they want by meercat,c&c as they do custom systems etc, best mod you could do is the decat then the remap as its like a new car, andy f done mine and he is the man when it comes to remaps

cheers mate really enjoying the car just another quick question does doing a full decat bring some unwanted attention from the local bobbies due to the noise. This was the reason i was thinking of the PPP

steve

I have my bugeye de-catted back to the turbo down pipe after that if you replace the down pipe ie taking out the cat i'm pretty sure you need a remap, mines is pretty loud now that i got the mid section done but a full de-cat is pretty loud my neighbour had Paul Clarks old wrx and it was fully de-catted and was LOUD ,as for the local plod around here they aint really interested.

Although Cal doesn't have his anymore he did do a write up on the stages he took his car through, gradually increasing the power to just over the 300bhp mark. http://forums.sidc.co.uk/index.php?showtop...p;hl=thundercat . Good reading and well researched, might be helpful to you to go straight to what you want out of it. Doesn't have to be exact same products but good guide.

If you're looking for the around the 280 mark (and you will soon realise that will soon become "for now"!) perhaps go for something like a full decat, panel filter and then take it over to Andy F.

Don't neglect the brakes and suspension for future mods.

I have a 51 Bugeye WRX which has a full Hayward and Scott turbo back decat (sounds goooood :D ), free flow filter upgraded intercooler y piece uprated fuel pump and a Andy Forrest remap (all done before I got the car), Andy Forrest reckoned it was about 280bhp/280 torque when it was mapped. It drives and pulls really well.

To be honest I would start with brakes and handling mods first if I was starting from scratch..........but I am an old man!! That said I am looking at upgrading my turbo soon :P

TBH I started with styling as it didn't look the way I wanted it. A huge front scoop, huge rear spoiler, colour coded sills, fog light covers, Prodrive grills, new wheels and painted callipers did the job nicely. Then like everyone else has said, a de-cat zorst and a performance panel filter. At the moment the only original piece of the exhaust system left (apart from the manifold/headers) is the down pipe, with the rest being de-cat s/s (incl up-pipe) with Scoobyworld 'Race Box' back box, so a decent burble but not too loud. As for the brakes, I've stuck with standard disc's with mid-range Black Diamond Predator pads. They're certainly a bit better than standard but I get a lot less brake dust from them. Then again if I wore lead boots instead of a chequered bonnet or took her on the track I'd maybe have to consider upping the brakes a bit more. Finally suspension, again standard spec KYB gas shocks but with Whiteline Flatout springs and front and rear Whiteline solid Drop Links. The Drop Links were the last to be fitted and I was a bit sceptical but omg what a difference, well worth it imho. All of this saw my MY01 bugeye jump from 215bhp/215 torks to 265/270 when mapped by Andy Forrest.

Now having taken Andy's advice I recently fitted Samco silicone pipes including the Y pipe and a Zero Sports air intake pipe and with those on I can defo feel a smoother and quicker spool up.

So what's left for now? Just got to fit my HEL braided brake lines I recently bought on the group buy and my sport-cat hi flo down pipe. Then off to AndyF's again next month for tweaking. Hoping to get close to 280+/280+ but we'll see.

I've got a 01 bugeye and currently running 306bhp with:

Engine:

Decat centre

STi up-pipe - ported

STi PPP Sports cat downpipe

STi 500cc pink injectors

A set of cold NGK PFR7B plugs

A VF35 turbo

A Walbro Fuel Pump 255

Samco turbo to intercooler 'Y' pipe

Ported and wrapped headers

Replacement filter

AndyF remap

Suspension:

Whiteline front & rear droplinks

Whiteline rear ARB

I bought the Sti parts second hand and had it all fitted by Duncan at Hypertech. I did have a Prodrive backbox too (for sale if anyone is interested) but wanted the car nice a quiet for handsfree motorway phone useage, so changed back to the standard backbox.

Richard.
