Whiteline - Yes!

Recommended Posts

I was going to just post this in Euan's thread, but I'll make my own her instead... :D bit of a write up about the fitment for those who don't know...

I also bought stuff at AWD at the weekend, same time as Euan, I went for the Whiteline Solid Alloy Droplinks front and rear, and Whiteline REAR 22mm ARB.

I was chatting to Grant (AWD) about 24mm ARB on the back and 22 on the front, but he told me that that's no use, that the 22mm only on the rear with the drop-links front and rear is the best set-up for the road. He told me that he's played about with different setups, when they first started stocking whiteline, and that's the best setup for road, Which is fine as that's saving me money! :hello:

Also got to use the £50 voucher that i won at last years Aberdeen Scoobies Casino Night on top of the discounts that we got on the day, so I am absolutely over the moon with that!!!

So after deciding that the weather was too crap for Crail (It was pissing down rain at 8am in Aberdeen - So I went back to bed!) I decided to fit my stuff instead. Thankfully the weather was looking up by the afternoon, and the ground had at least dried up, which was a bonus...

Started with the Rear, as thats the big bit of the job, got the car up on ramps, getting my father to watch my mudflaps don't get caught, thankfully they just clear the ramps (These are quality home-made ramps, bit higher than the ramps that you buy from Halfrauds... so plenty room to work under the car)

  • Started by spraying everything that I was disconnecting with WD40 (be carfull not to spray the brakes!)
  • Then disconnecting the droplinks from the suspension arms, and then then problems began... one side came out a treat, no problem at all, otherside (Passenger) would NOT budge... Hmmm, tried all sorts, Solid hex sockets (I was using multistart untill that point) mole-grips, Filling flats on the nuts, but nothing was working... So plan B was initiated, and my friend the Hacksaw sorted it for me. :D
  • After that, it was the 2 bolts holding the ARB to the car, they came out easy enough, but were very rusty, so needed a good clean once they were out...
  • Just had to get the ARB out around the backbox then, which is not difficult, you just have to move it in the right direction to get it out you shouldn't need to move anything else to get it out... *make sure you know which way round the bar was fitted*

  • To put the new stuff back in, I gave everything a good clean, All of the mounting points for the Droplinks and ARB and applied some of that grease that came with the droplinks, to all of the contact points, and all of the Nuts, Bolts and Washers. (not too much though)
  • Fitted the new ARB same way as the old one came out, grease the poly bushes and hang the bar up bolts in a few threads, but didn't tighten it yet...
  • I fitted the Droplinks to the Suspension arms and then connected them to the new ARB tightened them up, job done.
  • Then I tightened up the ARB mounting bolts, I did this last so I could move the bar to line up with the droplinks better...

All that remained then was to get the back down off the ramps and put the front up...

Front Droplinks are even more straight forward, although, I was stuck with another bolt that just did not want to come out, so ended up having to hacksaw that one out too, which was a major PITA especially as there's no room to work in there, I only had a full size hacksaw too, so cutting the bolt (carefully) trying not to cut or bash the steering rod, or the brake line or anything else for that matter... but very little more to say about the fitment of the front droplinks, except that I'm glad you get new hi-tensile bolts with the kit (Which are better than the original bolts - which were knackered anyways!)

Took the car for a test drive after that, in the dark... but I'm telling you, that's a nice difference there, car feels more stable, turn in feels quicker, and some corners that were a little uncomfortable before... nice... Also feel like I've a bit more cornering confidence now too. Ive not encounted any Lift-off oversteer yet, but then I was not not been pushing it a great deal, for a first run out...

All in, I'm VERY happy!!! :D

I was hoping to get to AWD and Crail but the wife was ill so I had the kids all weeend! Thw whiteline stuff was what I was gonna get too so it's going thru to Hypertech as they are (still) doing free fitting which you can't argue with!

Whats best setup for the newages then? Don't wanna spend too much so most benefit for least outlay would be nice :hello:

I'm getting an ARB fitted by Hypertech also. Duncan suggested rear only, 24mm in the middle setting. Hope that helps :D

Cheers m8 - I have an 03 WRX and I know the bushes etc are standard even though Al uprated a lot of other things and also had removed some stuff prior to selling to the dealer the car was going to before I nicked in and bought it.

Cheers for the info too TheWelsho :D

Oh it was MORE than worth it... :D

Always is. I can't belive how grippy my car is. There was a SLK 200 ahead of me tongiht on the back road and he floored it when he saw me in his mirrors. Silly person :D I followed suit in 4th gear hugging the bends like I was on rails - great stuff!

(Just kiddin :P)

Out of interest John, what handling mods do you have on your car again mate?

Solid droppies front and rear, Tein Superstreet COs and ALK. As I said before, jsut waitin' on the call from uncle Dunc to get the rear ARB fitted. I'm getting it powder-coated in Subaru purple, the first of its kind :P:D - Extra 25 notes for that, but fitting is free, so why the hell not? Ha!
