ally-b Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 I've felt that the roads are slippier than usual this winter , and I've heard that the grit/salt being used here is mixed with some molasses based stuff to make it 'stick' and stop it being washed away by the rain I thought it must be an 'urban myth' but I have heard the same story from several different sources . . . does anyone know if this is true ? According to friends in Cowal the sheep have even got a taste for this stuff now and come off the hills when they hear the gritter, to lick the stuff off the road I knew the deer like to lick the salt off the roads at dawn and dusk (I hit one 2 years ago ) , but apparently the sheep love this new stuff Being a 'barmy-biker' the thought of 'greased' roads is downright scarey Anyone else heard anything about this ? Al.

Al. Can't say I've heard anything about the "new stuff" but the roads have been a lot slippier than usual IMO, even the wifes car (which is fitted with proper winter tyres) has been slipping about a bit.
scientific steve Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 have heard something of the same too not sure if what i've heard is correct likes but it was something like animal fat/product mixed in with the salt and chemicals that was being spread on the roads
p1ggm Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 you can clearly see the chemical tanks on the gritters round here, its meant to de ice the roads fasted blah blah blah but it makes them a lot worse, needs a lot of rain to get itwashed off the road too
ur.a.bus Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 i've had to turn the heating off in the garage as the salt is drying on the car and a nightmare to wash off. collecting piles of salt along the skirts. never known so much salt to be put on a road before (and thats even counting when we used to get winters frosts in october snow over xmas, dont get that now but even more salt wtf)
ormiboy Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 Ive also noticed that the roads seem slippy. Thought it was just me. Even with the recent fog here in edinburgh i noticed that the roads were different. Still i one piece so cant be that bad Willie
nkwrx Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 Heard the exact same thing last year Ally and molasis seems to be stuff in question. MCN done a piece on it last year. Put the bike away for the winter the very next day. The slipperyness is an obvious issue but the extra stickyness helps the salt to eat your bike alive....not good
euan_r Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 heard a while ago there was new stuff being tried down in south of scotland, and that animals were eating it. think the stuff up our way is same as always.
frank c Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 aye, we`ve taken a fair old shine to this new stuff, canna beat a good lick of the tarmac before we head to work in the morning LOL that's just sooo wrong
