Seen a few topics relating to this, what is it? What are the signs its fooked? What damage does it do? How can you stop it?

Cheers

I think it stands for Mass Air Flow - the ECU uses it's readings to know how much air is coming in, so that it can work out how much fuel it needs to fix with it. As i understand it, if the MAF is not working properly it can lead to too much or too little fuel going in, which I imagine (almost completely clueless on engines) would mean there was fuel going into the cylinders which wouldn't ignite and would fook the engine.

Sounds Spot on!! Well done! You know more than you think!

Only thing I'd add is that's it's located just after the airbox just before the corrigated plastic tube at the front lefft of the engine bay. It's very delicate but worth cleaning every couple years or so, especially on classics.. or aftermarket Induction kits..

So... with a suspected overfuelling problem in my MY00... I should really get that checked out then!!!

Clever bistad

Does the MAF contain a piece of wire that is heated and then constantly resistance checked, or is that something that used to be on cars moons ago?

I have a vague recollection from my youth, but nothing more.

I think too much fuel tends to be the lambda, too little fuel the maf (but I could be wrong, it has been known)

Too much fuel is not ideal but its better than too little

Can anyone tell me how you go about cleaning the MAF without rendering it fubar?

cheers

Iain

Remove from car (not just after driving though), take some brake cleaner and spray ......... generally speaking though it will still go fubar. Fragile electronics .....

btw its for measuring the airflow, this helps the ECU decide how to achieve the proper stoich. Generally they hunt like a pig or guzzle fuel like a big guzzling thing if they go fubar. Andy was close its not that it injects too much fuel, the exact opposite, not enough runs lean and bingo NO 4 cyl goes byebye.

Best way to check if yours is faulty is if your a classic owner do an ECU check with the plugs under dash, Reset it as well and see if it runs like a pig afterwards. Newage then its a select monitor check i'm afraid.

Im a mere BMW tech so dont know these tractors too well
