Boxer23 Posted January 25, 2004 Posted January 25, 2004 Some very good points raised there, Nick. If you have an Impreza in your garage you have to be prepared to look after here. With some TLC, time and money the cars are usually pretty safe but if one thing gooes wrong.....POP. Fingers crossed the old Boxer-engine magic comes back when you start the key and get rolling again.
Cret Posted January 25, 2004 Posted January 25, 2004 Well even though mine's dead I still can't wait to get it sorted give it a damn good thrashing again! That said I'm getting rather attached to the rangie even after only using it for a week. I am now the lord & master of the roads peasants. Still, considering that £30 of go-go juice just lasted about 70 miles, the novelty will wear off quite rapidly I expect....
CustomScoobyIOM Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 Ouch Jim! THats what I thought mate honest but once I test drove the STI3, its amazing. Youll love it
Kristan Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 Hehe, should be looking at around 300 from mine by next weekend, can't wait!
Boxer23 Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 Kristan, you got some goodies line up?? Tell us?
enCrypt Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 Kristan, Is yours an early 96 RA or a late 96?? If so theres a bit of difference in power as seen on this site... Impreza Specs by Year As far as I remember you divide the PS by 1.01387 to get BHP figure, so the 300PS (which is what mine is...99STi RA Ltd) works out at 295bhp so with my Firestorm on it must be 300bhp if not a little more!!
Kristan Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 It's an early 96 so it's an STi 2 rather than 3, Type RA vLtd. I've got a chip arriving from aus which maps for 16psi (mine is currently 12psi) and 97 SUL. They reckon it gives an extra 30-40bhp on a standard WRX on crap fuel. Mine was last dyno'd at 250bhp at the wheels and 280 at the crank(ish, have the graph at home), so I should be putting out around 280 at the wheels and over 300 at the crank with a bit of luck
CustomScoobyIOM Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Same place as Jim got? Just be careful! Is it mapped for your decat etc, etc? And those nice wheels
Kristan Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 That the bloke who posts as "Blue Haze"? If so then yeah - and don't worry, I'll be watching my engine like a hawk!! I am Mr Paranoid I've spoken to the bloke who does the map and he seems to know what he's on about, so I'm happy my engine isn't about to blow up - I mentioned the mods and he said it was fine, his was with similar mods on the same map.
CustomScoobyIOM Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Excellent good news mate Look forward to seeing it next time I am over Must get my oil temp installed. It got very hot yesterday
Kristan Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 the shopping list has oil temp & pressure gauges, a new boost gauge (to match the others) plus knocklink and dawes AFR. All costs money though so I'll just have to do it in stages Service is the next thing though, gonna get everything done (bar the cambelt) so that's not gonna be cheap :S
Cret Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 I've had ones from 'down under' from two different places. Both have been very cheap, very helpful people but both have caused pinking/knocking leading me to suspect it was a different cause with the car, and not necessarily the chips themselves. More just something they have highlighted. The first was a 'Subzero group A' chip from race dynamics, and the other was from Alex at Fatsport. Be interested to know how you get on Kristan if yours is one of these chips.....
Boxer23 Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 ....chips....with tomato sauce......and a burger........A CHEESEBURGER!! lol
Kristan Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Mine is a fatsport one from Alex... Hmm, will be listening really closely to the engine now!! Were you running it on 95 or 97?
CustomScoobyIOM Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Is it for a Legacy engine or Impreza? The combinations of turbos etc are ALOT different. This might be what caused the knocking mate. Kristan my advice mate, get Knocklink AND Lamdalink fitted before the chip. Resist mate! Just to be on the safe side. Oil pressure and oil temp are last on the list. Defis mate Got some sitting on my desk here smiling at me! LOL!
Boxer23 Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Erm no, I didn't mean that. Meant some other post. Look into the light sir and forget this happened......
heazille Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Read you like a book son!!! Ta ta Richard Scooby Island
dooahhdoo Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Wouldn't like to carry him from the library!
Boxer23 Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Ha ha ha, no you've got it all wrong. I was talking about something else. Mixed wires.
Cret Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 No Jon, all the ones I got (as Alex sent me an extra Beta chip to test!) were legacy ones. They have to be specifically designed for my age legacy because it has an 8 Bit ECU instead of 16 bit one as fitted to all imprezas and Legacies from 91 onwards. They're the same maps, just programmed differently to work in the 8 bit ecu. I was running mine on SUL Kristan, and even with octane boost it was pinking/knocking. The chips were mapped for fuel the same as ours so that's why I'm reasonably sure that the chips weren't the cause of the problem with mine. Don't worry too much, I'm sure yours will be fine and you'll DEFINITELY enjoy the extra va va voom. Made a ton of difference to mine. A knocklink wouldn't be a bad idea though as Jon says.
aircrest Posted January 28, 2004 Posted January 28, 2004 Hi lads ......yes the guys name is andrew and he is serious, wants it as track day car etc, I degassed the a/c for him as he no longer wants the system .....wants the bhp instead.......he wasn't interested in the small amounts we were talking.........so I think its one to watch ......... Custom ..........You know when you just know it's all gonna end in tears.........
CustomScoobyIOM Posted January 28, 2004 Posted January 28, 2004 Lol! Im filling up now!! Sniff.... He would easily do the top end on mine as I have an RA Ratio gearbox 1-4 and a slightly longer 5th but with the Modena gearset (Apparantly unbreakable!! Ha Ha yeah right!)
