ryancat-85 Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 No not my tabby...... my catalunya on the way home from work on Friday i decided to pop in past my girlfriends. As i was slowing down to pull in to the drive i changed down a gear, engine died phoned the garage and they came straight out !! he had a quick look over the car made sure it wasn't the timing belt. Couldn't see anything so he tried turning the engine over, as he was doing it there was a grinding noise coming from the engine bay. I don't know a lot bout engines but from what iv heard i thought it might be the big end bearing, i finally got the car in to the garage tonight and there looking first thing tomorrow, i spoke to the mechanic earlier tonight and he reckons its the crankshaft ! i know its going to cost £££s if it is !! Can anyone help me out, i need to know what options iv got. do i just get it fixed ?? iv heard there is a local engineering company thats fitted a lot of reconditioned engines to scoobys or do i search breakers for a second hand engine ??? Ryan
colin_ross Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 Sorry to hear that Ryan. I'll admit it doesn't sound good but no point panicing until you know if it's fubar or not. Out of interest is ther any oil in it?
ryancat-85 Posted October 1, 2007 Author Posted October 1, 2007 there is, i checked that before the mechanic came out on Friday, it only got an oil change two weeks ago as well
scouk Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 Jeez! that's nae soo good mate! That's my worst fear at the moment, hearing silly noises from under the bonnet. Maybe try and ECU diagnostic and see if it reports any clues. I can't remember how to do it on the classics off hand but I'm sure someone here can tell you. Something like connecting wires in the drivers footwell to activate test mode or something and it's flashes an LED on the dash so many times to determin a fauilt. (It's more straight forward on the newage but you need seperate equipment) it only got an oil change two weeks ago as well heh same here... Just did the 444 mile round trip (why couldn't it of been 555 miles...) to Lanark and back yesterday and all is well. ..
catalunya409 Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 if the worst comes to the worst the engine from my cat is comin out soon and for sale........hopefully it wont come to that though bud...... colin_ross Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 (edited) it only got an oil change two weeks ago as well Ah, all becomes clear. For some reason these cars have a habit of doing engines just after oil changes. There is a long procedure to try and help but even then it's a nervous time for any Subaru owner. Ask the garage that did the oil change how they did it. Officially all they're meant to do is prefil the new oil filter but it's also a good idea to disconnect the crank sensor and crank the engine to circulate the oil before firing it up for real. Some people go to extremes and remove the spark plug when cranking it but that's a bit OTT. Edited October 2, 2007 by Playsatan2

johnnyr6 Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 Alan, it's only colin that gets nervous and if you saw him changing oil you'd know why...lol Sorry for the thread hijack Ryan. Johnny
euan_r Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 not good to hear min. update us on what the diagnosis is. if its bottom end you can get new short blocks which look to me to be better value compared to second hand engine. agra does a good job of rebuilding but price is reflected. there was a place in elgin i sent a cast tractor block to get bored out and steel liners added but cant remember the name of the place just now.
