Chapman81 Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Hi, Looking into buying an oil cooler and alloy radiator for my Type R. Can anyone recommend whats good and what to avoid? There is so much stuff on the market these day's. Also looking into a set of headers. Any help appreciated. SC
RS Grant Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 For the radiator, I've heard good things about the Koyo products... and for the Oil Coolers then Mocal seem to have a good name too mate. [H] Cheers, Grant
Chapman81 Posted August 13, 2007 Author Posted August 13, 2007 cheers for that where's the best place to get these from. Think i've seen koyo radiators on e-bay. I am modifying the Type R with reliability in mind so uprating the cooling and oil system first. Then brakes and handling. Cheers, Stewart
the squiggle Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Grex oil cooler does the same job as the Mocal except a lot cheaper than Mocal Increase your rad efficiency by fitting the Zerosports Low temp thermostat and Slam Panel enclosure, the later helps direct air through the radiator instead of the air flow going partially around the radiator. Upper and Lower rad hoses should also be changed to Samco or similer items
the squiggle Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Re Headers, go for HKS Equal length items as these are the most reliable and wrap the lot with some decent quality material
Chapman81 Posted August 13, 2007 Author Posted August 13, 2007 Alrighty, cheers Squirrel. So should I fit the thermostat and slam panel instead of the alloy rad or fit the lot? Cheers, SC
st3ph3n Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 I've got the Zerosports cool thermo fitted and a Cusco slam panel. Result is temps are very nice indeed.
the squiggle Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Alrighty, cheers Squirrel. So should I fit the thermostat and slam panel instead of the alloy rad or fit the lot? Cheers, SC For max reliability, fit the lot in one go and flush out the coolant system to shift any deposits that may have built up. When adding coolant add an item called Water Wetter to the mixture. This breaks down the surface tension of the water to help the coolant get into all the nooks and crannies in the water jacket, this helps prevent hot spots building in the block Cusco or Zerosports for the Slam Panel
Chapman81 Posted August 13, 2007 Author Posted August 13, 2007 Will also be fitting an uprated oil pump.
Chapman81 Posted August 13, 2007 Author Posted August 13, 2007 Yeah i've looked into that. Will just go for the lot and replace all the hoses.
the squiggle Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Will also be fitting an uprated oil pump. Not so much an uprated pump but more of a modified pump. Source from Roger Clark Motorsport for about £180 and the quality of oil should be 10w/60 for general quick road use or 15w/50 for more track/drag based use and change evry 3000 - 6000 miles
the squiggle Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 What's a slam panel? Metal plate that goes above your radiator and two foam pads that go down the side to direct the flow of air through your radiator instead of the airflow taking the easier route of around the radiator.
Chapman81 Posted August 14, 2007 Author Posted August 14, 2007 This is my Black 2 Door Type R. http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p132/Ch..._Impreza_04.jpg http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p132/Ch..._Impreza_05.jpg http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p132/Ch..._Impreza_02.jpg
drb5 Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Nothing wrong with the standard rad. Defo fit at least the uprated thermostat.

Nice alloys as well but ditch the lights though it is nice to see they have mentally ill people owning Impreza's in Japan You gonna be keeping this one?
fai17 Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 It's stunning m8.... I don't think you need to up rate the rad or oil cooler. But fit the slam panel and cooler thermostat will be a great start.
Chapman81 Posted September 2, 2007 Author Posted September 2, 2007 Hi Guy's, Not been on the site for a while. Like the new site a lot. Squirrel-I am sure this car is a version 4. It's a late 98 model and has version 4 dash etc. Auction sheet also say's V4. I will be keeping this one until it's sold, whenever that is. Already had a lot of interest in the car. Don't worry I will not be taking it on the road until I change the rear light clusters. In fact the are off already. Couldn't wait. Cheers, SC
It's stunning m8....

I don't think you need to up rate the rad or oil cooler.

But fit the slam panel and cooler thermostat will be a great start.
